---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Set 1: rock from easy to heavy. (Listen to this set: Pop-up) |
||||||||||
Religious Knives | Luck (track 2) (Listen: Pop-up) | Resin | No Fun Productions | Quiet-ish but dark, sort of slow & druggy rock. They're like Godot: "I waited too long, but you didn't come." | ||||||
Robert Plant & Alison Kraus | Fortune Teller (track 9) (Listen: Pop-up) | Raising Sand | Rounder | Kind of a drugged-out version of the classic song. | ||||||
Assemble Head In Sunburst Sound | The Chocolate Maiden's Misty Summer Morning (track 8) (Listen: Pop-up) | Ekranoplan | Tee Pee | Mellow rock. | ||||||
And The Lefthanded | Rocket Rock (track 3: faded out by -0:27) (Listen: Pop-up) | Death Before Distemper 2: Revenge Of The Iron Ferret | DC Records | Catchy and punchy electronic rock, bit dreamy. From the soundtrack to the movie. | ||||||
Cosmic Psychos | Guns Away (track 3) (Listen: Pop-up) | Oh What A Lovely Pie | Amrep | Sustained, hypnotic in its way. | *** | |||||
Marble Sheep | Raise The Dead (track 3) (Listen: Pop-up) | Message From Oarfish | Captain Trip | Sustained heavy rock, they're having fun. The title of the song makes an unintentional tie-in to the subject matter of the next set - the old radio show portion of the evening. | ||||||
Mic break between Sets 1 & 2. Background music played during it: (Listen to this set: Pop-up) |

Dubfire | Emissions (track 3) | Expansion / Contraction | Minus | |||||||
Set 2: the old radio show portion of the evening. (Listen to this set: Pop-up) |

Quiet, Please | Shadow Of The Wings | Originally broadcast April 17, 1949 | (no label) |
This episode: a dying child and her deathbed conversation with the Angel Of Death. Get out a towel, because this is a true tearjerker, but it's one with a happy ending.
The series is now considered by many to be 1 of old-time radio's best science fiction / horror series – if not THE best. It was always very reductive: very few people were in any episode, and all the action centered around 1 extraordinary actor: Ernest Chappell. Excerpts about Quiet, Please from Dunning's Encyclopedia Of Old-Time Radio: "...unsung and little-heard in it's day...Creator Wyllis Cooper was radio's best practitioner of an almost surrealistic dramatic form....His characters walked in a fuzzy dream world where the element of menace was ripe and ever-present...." All in all, superior radio. |

Set 3: sort of dark, sort of techno, sort of funky. (Listen to this set: Pop-up) |
||||||||||
Plastikman | Consume (track 2) (Listen: Pop-up) | Consumed | Novamute | Dark, reverberant, atmospheric. | ||||||
Muscleheads | Phosphorescence (track 8) (Listen: Pop-up) | Death Before Distemper 2: Revenge Of The Iron Ferret | DC Records | Really good, dark, electronic, funk aspect, softly acidic vocals. | *** | |||||
Ryoji Ikeda | Matrix 2.4 (CD 2, track 4) (Listen: Pop-up) | Matrix | Touch | Experimental & electro-funky, deep at times. The 4 tracks in a row we hear are actually part of 1 much longer work. | ||||||
Ryoji Ikeda | Matrix 2.5 (CD 2, track 5) (Listen: Pop-up) | Matrix | Touch | Experimental & electro-funky, deep at times. The 4 tracks in a row we hear are actually part of 1 much longer work. | ||||||
Ryoji Ikeda | Matrix 2.6 (CD 2, track 6) (Listen: Pop-up) | Matrix | Touch | Experimental & electro-funky, deep at times. The 4 tracks in a row we hear are actually part of 1 much longer work. | ||||||
Ryoji Ikeda | Matrix 2.7 (CD 2, track 7: faded up at -1:35) (Listen: Pop-up) | Matrix | Touch | Experimental & electro-funky, deep at times. The 4 tracks in a row we hear are actually part of 1 much longer work. | ||||||
Naw | Cloning (1 blood made 2 remix) (track 6) (Listen: Pop-up) | Aidan Baker: Remixes | Arcolepsy | Druggy & techno-y. | ||||||
Forensic featuring MC Plague | Demented Flows (track 4: begun at +:10, ended at +2:33) (Listen: Pop-up) | Hard Sessions 2 | Shadow | 1 of the 2 best tracks on the CD - the other, "Inferior" is also by these guys. And it's way great. | ||||||
Mic break between Sets 3 & 4. Background music played during it: (Listen to this set: Pop-up) |
||||||||||
Dubfire | Emissions (track 3) | Expansion / Contraction | Minus | |||||||
Set 4: the psych rock portion of the evening. (Listen to this set: Pop-up) |
||||||||||
Black Angels | Snake In The Grass (track 11) (Listen: Pop-up) | Directions To See A Ghost | Light In The Attic | Easy tempo, bit spaced and almost low-key psych rock, resonant & acidy. | ||||||
F/i | The Hot Shop (track 9) (Listen: Pop-up) | A Question For The Somnambulist | Strange Attractors | Psych rock, getting a little faster. | ||||||
The Heads | Handlar Med Jonesie (track 2) (Listen: Pop-up) | (no title) | (no label) | It's from a 2-track split on-tour CD with Wooden Shjips. This song: a slow & spacey-loopy start, gradually builds to heavier, acidy & more intense. The Wooden Shjips song is also really good. | ||||||
Mic break between Sets 4 & 5. Background music played during it: (Listen to this set: Pop-up) |
||||||||||
Dubfire | Emissions (track 3) | Expansion / Contraction | Minus | |||||||
Set 5. (Listen to this set: Pop-up) |
||||||||||
Phil Niblock | Not Yet Titled (CD 2, track 3) (Listen: Pop-up) | Touch Three | Touch | Treated trumpet & harmonics, builds and gets more active, almost rock-like, didgeridoo-like trumpet, best song on the first 2 CDs. | ||||||
Sunn O))) + Boris | Blood Swamp (track 6) (Listen: Pop-up) | Altar | Southern Lord | Opens like hearing distant industrial feel down a long metallic corridor, builds a little to gradually shifting & surging, it's most like Sunn O))) by themselves, sudden quiet and fade out just before end. | ||||||
End of show mic break. Background music played during it: (Listen to this set: Pop-up) |
||||||||||
Sunn O))) + Boris | Blood Swamp (track 6) | Altar | Southern Lord | Time was up, so I just talked over the end of the song. |
