Doug, excuse my injecting a down note, but did Bo catch any flack from the Clash's fans? I never saw a Clash show, but I'd always heard that their American R&B opening acts (Sam and Dave, Curtis Blow, e.g.) got some pretty heavy negative vibes from white Clash fans.

Nice talkover music, Doug. I had a chance to see MMW and DJ Logic at the Kimo Theater in Albuquerque, NM back in 1998. Fantastic show, but the bridge on Chris Woods double bass blew up during the second song and he was stuck with his electric for the rest of the show. And it was still damn good.

I can't even remember who opened for the Clash when I saw them in '82. I think Terry Chimes was drumming for them, and he was great.

Lee Dorsey was a Clash opener too!

i lived in philly the year that joe strummer died. my band's practice space was connected to the tla theater. you could see and hear everything through a crack in the wall. got to see him do straight to hell. so great.

Saw Kurtis Blow and Gregory Isaacs open for The Clash at The Pier; no major booing for Isaacs and little for Blow until later in the set. I may have grumbled about Kurtis, but I slept through Isaacs. C'mon I was 17!

17 year olds can be dumb as hell. I pre-orded Sandinista and when I got it, I hated it and basically stopped listening to the Clash. Easily my favorite album now.

Speaking of musical ignorance and impatience. I thought Coltrane was a bunch of noise, but I kept trying. Then I was driving stoned on the freeway at twilight. Then it was like an epiphany. The speed, lights, chord and lane changes all jelled into THE musical statement which defined for me all that was the late 20th century in America.

Speaking of the Clash, it should be noted that Michael Campbell, who collaborated extensively with them, died of cancer back on 15 March this year. Better known as Mikey Dread, he did release some lovely dub platters in his time, some on his own Dread at the Controls label.

Ah, takes me back to the time where I would go hunting for JA pre-releases at Daddy Kool in deepest Soho and making it all the way out to Shepherd's Bush to get the latest 12s from Greensleeves. Always a risky undertaking; you could end up with Jamaican pressings that were virtually unplayable

Check out Mikey's "African Anthem". You won't be disappointed.

He also did a one-hour radio special on Studio 1 once. I've got it in the archives somewhere. I'll see if I can forward it to Doug the Man.

The whole Fairport gang came to town about a month ago and Dave Pegg made an impromptu appearance at a gig with Robyn Hitchcock and John Paul Jones. The long hair had definitely gone, but still knew how to handle a bass.

Still, got to see William Parker's Raining on the Moon ensemble last Saturday. Oooooh ....!
