Favoriting Bryce: Playlist from May 23, 2008 Favoriting

I never miscue a record. I am punctual, well-prepared, and dislike clutter. Outgoing and helpful, I'm always appropriately dressed. I do not behave erratically and have excellent penmanship. My CD's never skip, and I am in good health. I like all the notes, in any order.

Listener comments!

  12:08pm
north guinea hills:

wow, i haven't heard vol 13 before. this is super nice!
  12:09pm
Ted from Baltimore:

Wow, and I thought Indonesia was just gamelan and transvestite pop singers! Before I looked at the playlist I assumed that this was from somewhere on the African savanna. Like NGH says, really nice.
  12:12pm
north guinea hills:

and music of the degar people of central vietnam, it almost sounded like a vocoder... (must try to work.)
  12:26pm
north guinea hills:

bryce, thanks for the details in the comments...,very helpful for ethnomusicalogist nerds out there. (hate that word, i just like music and am curious to their spatial origins being a geographer)
  12:30pm
Ted from Baltimore:

So is the Musiques des Batak sacred music? The vocal sounds like it could be from a mass. Just sublime and overwhelming.
  12:31pm
marionfrenchie:

vive les gnerds ethnomusicologues que nous sommes!!!
  12:32pm
bryce:

hey, yousall
yeah, ngh, that instrument's a trip, right? there's a picture in the liners. it's a one-string unresonated fiddly bit. it's held vertically: hand on top, twixt toes at the bottom. a 2nd free string's tied to the bowed string & has a wooden disc at the end. the disc is held behind the player's teeth, the string taughtened..... bowcoder!
  12:52pm
Hugo:

The Jegog is a head trip all by itself!
  12:54pm
bryce:

hey, hugo!

ted, according to the notes, that Adat remains from pre-christian/islamic days & is still central to their schtick. among other things, it involves ancestor worship.....including re-burial.
  12:57pm
marionfrenchie:

i'll give this virtual Gamelan link to you all:
http://www.cite-musique.fr/gamelan/
you can discover and play with a mechanical Gamelan, thus understanding the concept and the working of a Gamelan. Of course it will never match the witnessing of a live Gamelan, but there you can participate.
Enjoy!
  12:58pm
raga:

bryce, what's the background instrument in this piece, the thing that sounds kinda like a synth?
great show. you are a light among the many dim bulbs.
  1:02pm
bryce:

hey, raga - it's no shit seriously super humungulous bamboos banged.
  1:06pm
dc pat:

like an orchestra of huge xylophones made out of bamboo
  1:27pm

marionfrenchie:

anybody checked the virtual gamelan? It's cool, there is a photo of different ones from different regions, and it's really interactive! it's not some joke...
  1:45pm
RH:

That Sundanese Jaipong record is one of my favorite records of all time. thanx--
  1:51pm
andy:

Thanks for playing javanese music. I'm part of a gamelan at my school
  1:56pm
Bob:

An emusic compilation at http://www.emusic.com/album/Various-Artists-Smithsonian-Folkways-Music-of-Indonesia-Vol-2-Indonesian-Popular-Mus-MP3-Download/10882087.html lists Wuyung by Orkes Kroncong Mutiara, and the clip sounds pretty similar. Do you know if it's the same gamelan?

The compilation has an excellent cover.
  2:20pm
Brooklyn Bridget:

For contemporary music, I really like a group called Electric Junkyard Gamelan. They make their own instruments, compose new songs based on class gamelan, and sound very authentic.
  2:26pm
