Favoriting October 30, 2007: Ed Askew & Joshua Burkett Live Set And Interview

After languishing in obscurity for decades, the music of idiosyncratic singer-songwriter Ed Askew is finally getting the attention it deserves. Ask The Unicorn, his 1968 debut album for ESP-Disk, has often been compared to the work of labelmates Pearls Before Swine. Askew's equally wonderful second album, Little Eyes, was recorded a few years later but remained unreleased until the De Stijl label pressed a limited edition LP in 2003. This year, they finally made it available on CD. Although Askew once accompanied himself on a kind of Latin American soprano guitar called a tiple, carpal tunnel syndrome now prevents him from playing. For this live session, contemporary psychedelic folk artist Joshua Burkett plays the instrument for him.

Was that from a CD or an MP3?

Most of the Syliphone stuff is from Guinea (think Orchestra Baobab). There is a recently released smoking 2CD comp of Syliphone high points.

That was a CD-R, though it looks like it was burned straight from an LP. Not sure if it's commercially available.

It's way out of print. When I googled it it came up in Liz Berg's play list too, probably with the typo in the label name and everything, so I was optimistic.

Anyway, the available comps are great too.

Also thanks for the Karen Dalton. I've been craving more of her rootsy stuff for years and didn't think anything like this might come to light.

And Moxhams now? Nice.

Hello Hatch, I just finished listening to an MP3 of your interview with Ed Askew. I was very impressed by his music and most especially the origin of the recording of Little Eyes. In 1969 I was a member of the group Cro Magnon who also recorded our first and only LP on ESP Disk. I believe that the name of the engineer Ed could not recall was a Scandinavian man named Ono Schultz. He was the sole engineer during the two weeks we recorded Orgasm. As you may know, Orgasm was also never released. The producer and brain child behind the concept for Cro Magnon, Brian Elliott passed away tragically in an automobile accicent around 1976 and we all went our separate ways. Listening to Ed's story brought back many fond memories for me. Ed's music is beautiful -- his live set was dreamlike and thank you very much for presenting this psychedelic-folk pearl!
