Loving the coltrane segments up here in New Hampshire. I always forget the wonderful connections of all the great jazz from that era. So much great music and you can really sit and listen to changes that each musician was going through.

So thanks for taking the time and playing them. Will go back and listen to last weeks since I missed it.

Weird - I'm in New Hampshire too. I can't imagine there are a ton of FMU New Hampshire listeners, but you never know. The documentary is amazing - listening to Coltrane is a constant rediscovery.

Dave, I wish it were possible for you to go back and here Part 1, but this Coltrane documentary is not being archived. The producer of the program felt he did not have permission from the Coltrane estate to allow it to be made available in a form that could be easily downloadable. Trust me, we are hoping that at some point that permission will be given. If that ever happens, I will rebroadcast the whole thing in order for it to be archived.

I'm (yet another) Dave from N'Hampsha and I'm also loving the documentary. I never did get too much into jazz, but I had to pick my jaw up off the floor the first time I heard Coltrane's "Stellar Regions."
This is educational and reverent to the man and manages to avoid whiffs of hagiography, all the more impressive because so many of his peers put him up on such a lofty pedestal.

thanks doug! inspirational on many fronts. who was it that said Coltrane hardly talked in rehearsals. that he allowed the musicians to use their individual musical intelligence. and that he didn't even know what the pieces were called until the recordings came out.

Mike, this record is actually the first track of Bryce's show. The trumpet is Alan Shorter (Wayne's brother) and the tenor sax is Gato Barbieri. The album is Shorter's release "Orgasm" on Verve. A stunning record indeed. Welcome to Friday afternoons Bryce!!

Mike, if you saw Trane and the Vanguard in the early 70's you indeed were lucky! (He died in '67.) I imagine you meant '60s and, yes I am envious. Impulse records (or whatever corporate monolith owns the Impulse catalog) released a four-CD box called the Complete 1961 Village Vanguard Sessions, which is gets any of us who weren't as lucky as you just about as close as possible to experiencing the Trane Quartet at that famed venue back then.
