I'm flattered that you reached for this archive _before_ reaching for the coffee! Andrew Hill's "Black Fire" will always be special to me because it was the first AH record I ever bought. Such an ecstatic aha! moment when I got it home. And the ecstacy has never ended. About a month before he died, Hill perfomed a stunningly beautiful show at Trinity Church in lower Manhattan. The fact that the name Marion Brown isn't on the lips—and in the hearts—of every American makes me physically ill. What a supremely creative and vital artist. The quartet on the ESP lp "Why Not" is stunning. Nearly as crucial in the history of jazz labels as ESP is Strata-East, the musician-owned and operated label co-founded by Stanley Cowell. Quick. Name your favorite Strata-East album...

Well, of those I know about, Live at Slugs with Music Inc. which features Stanley Cowell, Charles Tolliver, Cecil McBee and Jimmy Hopps. But there are others in the stack which I've yet to listen to ...

My favorite Strata-East release is probably Brother Ahh's* "Sound Awareness." One entire side of this record is a single, epic call-and-response chant/sermon led by Max Roach, who intones "Love, love, love" over a hundred-person vocal chorus. Monsterly! And guess what, dear listeners, I'll pull that sucker out and play it on my next show.

*Also known as Robert Northern, who added some lovely french horn stylings to a number of Sun Ra sides.

My former boss, an Aussie Chap, loved AH. Bought him a CD for Christmas present. In retrospect, I regret doing that now; he was such a son of mother and well, I should of kept that CD for my own collection. Wait, what was my point...oh, um. thanks for including Mr. Hill in this weeks playlist.
