I have a hard time equating MTV to radio play, because they're different formats, and videos were often popular more because of the video than the song. You could make a dull song with a well-made, interesting video, and it would be a hit on MTV, but otherwise a flop. Hoping this doesn't come off as an argument, just elaborating on my reasoning.
