I remember the Radio Free Europe TV ads from the '60s. A David McCallum lookalike walked up stairs into a studio, sat down and loosened his tie, cued the board operator, leaned into the mic and said something like "Honski di bonski, bonsk . . . 'On Broadway.'" I thought it was super-cool.

The highlife/calypso influences are still thick here with Fela. Only a couple of years later (and especially after Fela's trip the U.S.) his music would take a turn toward the searing Afrobeat that we're all more familiar with.

A similar film (which I still need to see) is What The Hell Happened to Blood, Sweat, and Tears?. BST went on a US government backed tour of Eastern bloc countries in the late 60s. The shows were a disaster and the band got a lot of flack for it back home.

My father was a Southern Baptist minister working with the Alabama State Baptist board. Alabama sponsored Baptist churches in Nigeria and Dad would travel there periodically during the 1980's. Per my begging instructions he would return with a stack of Fela records, juju, highlife, Geraldo Pino. His colleagues always got a kick out of "Dr. Billy" and his records.

An earnest, bim-bommy folk singer of a kind familiar to anyone who's been to a Reform or left-of-Reform synagogue did an original song. The meter and rhyme demanded that she pronounce "trauma" as "traum-AH." I was about to leave, but couldn't. She was a recently fired Federal employee.
