This is where all of culture and all of time are collapsed into one seductive portal and viewed through the panoramic lens of the exotic. Come and embark on an armchair-travel virtual-voyage to the heart of timeless darkness and beyond; embrace the numinous monolith of the exotic immensity. Let us find that place where hybridization meets its destiny as pure fantasy. Let us become observers observing those others who are ourselves. You wear your mask and I'll wear mine.

if you listen in headphones, there's an unmistakable section when the bass comes in - after the echo-trumpet intro - where Macero is just looping Maupin's bass clarinet line, and each time it ends you can hear the splice. it doesn't resolve to silence, it's cut off

I second this. Pneumonia wracked my lungs for 5 weeks 17 years ago. I took Vitamin D3 since then, and although I did get some respiratory viruses, the addition of zinc as coelacanth∅ mentioned helped a lot with my recent chest cough. Zinc is the one supplement/mineral that in random controlled trials shows statistical significance in reducing the lifespan of a respiratory virus/cold.

I take all of that except the zinc (which I start at signs of illness). I somehow avoided getting sick for years after the onset of chronic fatigue and brain fog, and my latest theory is that when I started having the chronic stuff it was the first time in my life I supplemented vitamin D regularly (in hopes that it would cure the fatigue and brain fog).

OK had to look up gating drums. WHat I found was suggesting using a lot of reveb and cutting off the signal when it goes below a certain threshold. So this begs the question, can this also be done to cut signal in?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:26pm
coelacanth∅:

↳ Alex from Media @8:24
it can be but it's not always very noticeable - as a musical signal generally attacks somewhat suddenly then fades.
-but it can be used to eliminate low-level noise you may not want (ie a rattling drum snare)
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 8:28pm
Alex from Media:

Understood. Might be an interesting experiment with an instrument that is more easily modulated, e.g. trumpet.
Avatar 8:30pm
Flash Strap:

one of the things that's cool about the edits - just one of them - is that it's a piece of open musique concrete hiding in plain sight on one of the most listened-to records of all time, that most people never notice, and that if you do, it's plainly obvious, and confesses things to you about how the music was created.
(the clip at the end of the looped section is also very very similar to the intentional aesthetic of sampled loops)

i take a lot more than that! i was a sick child and got gradually worse until ~24 years old -when i stopped seeing doctors and pretty much stopped taking any drugs. my health was so bad i took out life insurance so my mother wouldn't have to pay for my funeral!
...but i gradually learned stuff and gradually got better.
...one thing i didn't take *b.c.* is
vitamin D. i'd worked in corporate vitamin store where they put the fear of calcification in us. dumbasses.
...always new things to learn.

↳ Song: "Keep It Like That - Tight" by "Terje Rypdal"
This has long been one of my favorite Terje tracks, but for some reason i'd never really thought about how electric-Miles-esque it is – but give a close listen to Brew and you'll hear Miles say "keep it like that - tight." when i heard that the other day, it immediately called to mind the title of this Terje track, a very clear, and yet somehow oblique reference (if only because of how hard it is to hear)

Jan Garbarek on sax here. also: Arild Andersen on bass
Bobo Stenson on electric piano

i'm all for it! i have a digital 8-track and one of the effects is a gate. for some reason not called that; it's the "violin" effect - but if i set the threshold a certain way it's a gate. it's fun! i've used it on "non-musical instrument" percussion with interesting results.

. . . don't you make music? i seem to've gotten that impression.

my impression is that Teo liked the line that Maupin came in on, but wanted it to have come in earlier along with the introduction of that bass line, so he clipped the line and looped it until it caught up with the rest of Maupin's playing

Doodling on the guitar, amateur at best, not since the arthritis got worse. Not much on bandcamp, buy stuff but no account.

↳ Song: "The Call" by "Mal Waldron"
ECM's first-ever release was Mal Waldron's Free At Last - Japo was an experimental sublabel of ECM and this incredible Waldron LP was the first release!

Released in 2 versions, one of which credits the whole ensemble on the cover: Fred Braceful, Eberhard Weber, Jimmy Jackson in addition to Mal

one of just a few records that Mal plays electric piano on, along with those Embryo records. in fact he rerecorded this track a couple years later with Embryo on Steig Aus
