Obscure musical gems, avant experimentation, and classics worth rehearing. A conurbation of Leslie speakers, timbales, plungers, arch-tops, tablas, and squeaky reeds. Black ties, pork pies, Cuban boots, Nudie suits, bobbysocks, turtlenecks, and high-heeled sneakers. Jazz is the north star but it’s a wide universe, so says The Laughing Clock.

Spotlighting Hal McKusick and Bunky Green today: if you want to hear more Green, I featured him during both marathon shows (preceding this week) and if you skip around you avoid the soft sell (I didn’t rap over any Green tracks).

Hey DJ Peter and Clock-Punchers! Heard some live music this afternoon, Abraham Burton with a quartet of youngens. (Boy, I remember when Burton was a "Young Lion"). Was a fine set; he's really quite the saxaphonist (and, it was a short way from where I live in Centeral Joisey, in a library, free, with a parking lot no less! Nice set; maybe go hear Ben Goldberg at Dowtown Music Gallery this Tuesday night (not as easy, since it's in Manhattan, but free, if you don't count records I'm sure I'll purchase while I'm there).

Boy, the sax part here reminds me of John Lurie. Interesting possible influence (on Lurie, I mean).

Late to tune in, be because I'm spinning a Lucero album.

Have you folks read Lurie's autobiography? I did but don't remember what he said about his development of his sax chops. It was a library book so I can't refer back to it.

The Michael McDonald memoir also has lots of drug stories I gather. Mrs. DJP was really intrigued by McDonald when we watched that MAX "yacht rock dock," but I decided not to get her the memoir because... it would be less fun of a read if you don't already know the names he's dropping (which she doesn't)

Thanks a lot, Peter. I think the alternation of rather different styles was quite nice, actually. If they had both been bebop altos, it would have been too much.

Dug the show-liking the Bunky Green stuff, didn't pay that much attention to him previously (my bad). lots of the tunes had a "West Coast Jazz" feel (whether or not they were actually West Coast); the tuba and guitar in many of them I think add to that. Dig that last McKusick track much!
Thanks Peter!
