VED  Istanbul Airport 3 PM   Favoriting If The Door Is Opened, It's Opened From Outside  Kontra-Musik  2023  In a time fixated with genres, Ved have kept defying definition for over a decade, their hypnotically repetitive music constantly crossing the borderlands of post-punk, art rock, musique concrète and minimalism. So far, vocals have been sacrificed for the sampled voices of anyone from Uri Geller to Yngwie Malmsteen. However, on their fifth full-length album, If the Door …, the group brings a new, literary dimension to their eclectic music by letting two of their four permanent members emerge as lyricists with wildly contrasting vocal styles – one confrontational, the other introspective – on ten songs all springing from collective improvisation. So, what are they singing about? Refrigerators, airports and excrements – or is it capitalism, transcendence and rebirth?    0:01:41 (MP3 | Pop-up)
Lucrate Milk  Fucking Pacifist   Favoriting I Love You Fuck Off  Atypeek Music  1983 / 2014  Lucrate Milk (short for Lucrative Milk) were a French art punk and No Wave band from Paris, France. The band was formed in 1979 by two former milk delivery men, Lombrick Laul (bass player, and the future designer for the band Bérurier Noir), and Masto Lowcost (born Tomas Huser, saxophonist and photographer). The music was often called "Wild, dadaist, juvenile, and anti-commercial", and the band had been likened to UK based punk bands the Slits, Crass and X-Ray Spex. The band lasted from 1979 to 1983. The group has retained a certain aura to this day in France's punk circles due to their complete lack of compromise and influence on the French DIY scene.    0:06:55 (MP3 | Pop-up)
Geza X & The Mommymen  I Hate Punks   Favoriting You Goddamn Kids!  Final Gear  1982  Geza Gedeon (born September 28, 1952), professionally known as Geza X, is an American producer. He was a personality in the Los Angeles punk scene in the late 1970s. Geza produced records for a number of early California punk bands including the Dead Kennedys, Germs, Redd Kross, Black Flag, The Avengers and The Weirdos. His productions of "Holiday in Cambodia" for Dead Kennedys and "Lexicon Devil" for Germs separated California's punk sound from others at the time with its eccentricity, humor and spunk, making Los Angeles and San Francisco very different from the scenes in New York or London. Geza also played guitar, sang, and dealt with most studio issues in his band Geza X and the Mommymen. He is credited as having pioneered the use of the headset microphones now ubiquitous in music. They released one official single and a full-length album You Goddam Kids! on the minor label Final Gear in 1982.    0:08:11 (MP3 | Pop-up)
Ian Dury  Blackmail Man   Favoriting New Boots & Panties!  Templemill Records  1977  Even though ‘New Boots and Panties’ came out in September 1977 a month ahead of ‘Never Mind the Bollocks’ and six months after 'The Clash', Dury, a one-time art college lecturer and the former frontman with pub rockers Kilburn and the High Roads, was never really a punk. Aged then 35 and fifteen years older than most of the Sex Pistols, the Clash, the Buzzcocks and the other punk bands of the era, his lyrics, an inspired combination of rhyming couplets, clever wordplay, depictions of working class life and deft character observation, owed a debt to music hall theatre. His band -the at-that-time still to-be-named - the Blockheads’ music meanwhile was a hybrid of jazz, funk, rock ‘n’ roll and disco....    0:11:04 (MP3 | Pop-up)
Downtown Boys  Break A Few Eggs   Favoriting Full Communism  Don Giovanni Records  2015  They are a "serious band from Providence". Formed by vocalist Victoria Ruiz and guitarist Joey La Neve DeFrancesco in 2011, Downtown Boys is a five-piece activist punk band from Providence, Rhode Island. In fact, it has been called “America’s most exciting punk band” according to RollingStone. The band’s music is full of energy, frenzied rhythms that could set off a pogo frenzy on any dance floor, screaming saxophones, and a “warm and bright anthem” that sounds like an election campaign. In short, it’s a sweet mix that perfectly reflects the desire to make music dedicated to social and political change, which has been a common thread in the different creations of the Downtown Boys since their inception.    0:13:17 (MP3 | Pop-up)
Naked Raygun  Only In America   Favoriting Throb Throb  Quarterstick Records  1984  Naked Raygun is an American punk rock band that formed in Chicago in 1980. The band was active from 1980 to 1992, along with reunion shows in 1997, and since 2006. Naked Raygun have cited various bands as influences, including Buzzcocks, Wire, the Stranglers, the Damned, the Ruts, Killing Joke, Siouxsie and the Banshees, the Jam, and the Clash. The band was formed in 1980 by Santiago Durango, Marko Pezzati and later Jeff Pezzati. Singer Jeff Pezzati was the sole constant member through multiple personnel changes.    0:15:18 (MP3 | Pop-up)
Swell Maps  Let's Buy A Bridge   Favoriting Jane from Occupied Europe  Rough Trade  1980  A band that didn't bother rehearsing, began writing their own songs because they couldn't play anyone else's, thought prog and punk were equally great in 1978, and cited Gerry Anderson's television puppet shows "Thunderbirds" and "Stingray" as equal influences to Can and T. Rex. They recorded a huge amount of material between 1977 and 1980, but only released two proper albums and a handful of maxi singles in their time together-- out of a sense of obligation, they actually finished recording their second LP after they had broken up...described by PF as "weird and wonderful...in the case of Swell Maps, that means consistently manic, unfocused, chaotic, uniquely unprofessional, and quite charming."    0:17:21 (MP3 | Pop-up)
Oil Tasters  My Girlfriend's Ghost   Favoriting Oil Tasters  Lexicon Devil  1982 / 2005  The Oil Tasters were an early 1980s band from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, in the United States. The band comprised bassist and vocalist Richard LaValliere, saxophonist Caleb Alexander, and drummer Guy Hoffman. The trio, founded on Milwaukee's East Side, released a 2-song 45 record in December 1980. It included "What's In Your Mouth" backed with "Get Out Of The Bathroom," a track which also appeared on Sub Pop founder Bruce Pavitt's compilation cassette release Sub Pop 5 (1981). In August 1981, a three-song EP was released with "That's When The Brick Goes Through The Window," backed with "Earn While You Learn" and "Smoke." The Oil Tasters left behind a self-titled LP recorded for Thermidor (1982), a Berkeley, California-based independent label. Their music is described as "somewhat bizarre, cutting-edge jazz-rock, armed with saxophone, drums, bass, and organ"...    0:19:18 (MP3 | Pop-up)

TAKAAT  Amidinin   Favoriting Is Noise, Vol. 1  Purplish Recordes  2025  Released March 19, 2025 - "First single, "Amidinin", which means friend in Tamashek, is OUT NOW!" From Stereogum: "Ahmoudou Madassane, Mikey Coltun, and Souleymane Ibrahim are best known as the rhythm section for Mdou Moctar, the Nigerian musician who’s made some of the best guitar music of the past few years. Now with Madassane on guitar and vocals, Coltun on bass, and Ibrahim on drums, the trio have a new project called TAKAAT, and are releasing their first EP Is Noise, Vol. 1 next month. Lead single “Amidinin” is out now. //// TAKAAT — pronounced “tuh-cot,” and meaning “noise” in the Tuareg language Tamashek — started during soundchecks while on tour with Mdou Moctar. They began writing music together in late 2023, melding the raw punk ethos of bands like Fugazi and Unwound together with the traditional flair of Africa’s Sahel region." https://purplishrecords.bandcamp.com/album/takaat-of-mdou-moctar-is-noise-vol-1  *   0:33:02 (MP3 | Pop-up)

WITCH  Queenless King   Favoriting SOGOLO  Partisan Records  2025  Zambia's legendary WITCH return with a full Album Jun 13, First single released March 19: "Queenless King". From Stereogum: "Back in the ’70s and ’80s, the Zambian band WITCH pioneered the subgenre known as Zamrock, a specific fusion of psychedelic rock and African music. WITCH broke up in the mid-’80s, but they reunited and started playing live again in 2012. In recent years, lots of people have been discovering or rediscovering WITCH’s music, thanks in part to the way that the Zambian-born artist Sampa The Great has listed them as an inspiration. In 2022, WITCH released “Waile,” their first new song in 38 years, and they followed it with the Sampa The Great collab “Avalanche Of Love” and then the reunion album Zango. They’re not done yet. There’s another album on the way. //////// Original WITCH frontman Emmanuel “Jagari” Chanda and ’80s-era keyboardist, Patrick Mwondela recorded their new LP SOGOLO in Berlin, while the group took a quick break from their touring schedule last year. They’ve got a new lineup now, and bassist Jacco Gardner produced the album. Chanda is the only surviving original member of WITCH, since all of his bandmates’ lives ended in the AIDS epidemic, a sobering thing to learn. It wouldn’t be a WITCH blog post if I didn’t point out that the group’s name stands for We Intend To Cause Havoc. The funky, life-affirming new song “Queenless King” feels like it might cause the good kind of havoc. In a press release, Jagari has this to say: "As we embark on this new album, we invite you to join us on a transformative journey that embodies our core ethos as a Gathering at Zango was not just a moment in time; it was a pivotal experience that fueled our creativity and ignited our passion to push boundaries. This album is a reflection of that spirit — an exploration of new frontiers, where every note and lyric is a step into the unknown. We believe that music is a living, breathing entity that grows and changes, just as we do. SOGOLO means front or future. It is the future of a team with hope, peace, love; we’re wearing smiles, we march and dance to criss-cross rhythms. Let’s go friends, let’s go guys – SOGOLO in unity."" https://w-i-t-c-h.bandcamp.com/  *   0:40:00 (MP3 | Pop-up)
Kito Jempere  Punk African ft. Fotiniya   Favoriting Punk African ft. Fotiniya [Single]  System 108  2023  Released Nov 2023. "As some sort of a twisted tradition, Kito Jempere is delivering System 108 single every year or so. And after a pretty busy few months — a new album, a few singles and a book (real paper!) — he’s back with a new project, Punk African. And this “punk” goes places Kito Jempere couldn't. //////// After working with Kito on Green Monster album as half of the Buduchi, Fotinya is once again singing her made-up language bird lyrics and playing the flute. Also Lovvlover, a frequent collaborator and part of the Kito Jempere Band, is playing guitars (the punk element). And of course, Kito on the heavy bongo-on-bongo production duties. //////// Like a festive riotous gypsy caravan made a wrong turn and found themself in the dunes of Africa. KNEECAP  Guilty Conscience   Favoriting Guilty Conscience Single  Heavenly Recordings  2021  Mo Chara, Móglaí Bap, and DJ Próvaí have built up a notoriety for themselves which hasn't been seen in Irish music for many years, perhaps ever! Even if you put that to one side for a second, Kneecap are a frighteningly articulate rap group. Merging Irish with English, satire with socially conscious lyrics, and reality with absurdity, theirs is a voice which comes screaming from the too-often deprived areas of the North of Ireland, speaking in a language which is too-often ignored, and it makes for suitably electrifying stuff. There seems to be no stopping their spectacular rise, with sold out tours in the US and UK and even bigger plans to come. Whether you understand half of what they're saying or not, you won't want to miss them...“Their balance between anti-establishment lyrics, explosive delivery, graphic humour and unrelenting charm is reminiscent of early Eminem” – LA Times    1:06:56 (MP3 | Pop-up)
Baby Dave  Middle Urinal Business   Favoriting Different Gravy  Baby Dave  2023  Following from the 2022 debut album ‘Monkey Brain’ which featured instrumental and production contributions from Damon Albarn, Issac Holman signalled to fans that he would continue to release as his solo alias Baby Dave with new 9-track album ‘Different Gravy’. Seemingly attempting to recreate what Damon Albarn managed when he first moved from Blur to Gorillaz, this Baby Dave project has almost nothing to do with his previous ventures and instead hones in on this brilliantly diverse and varied direction. Taking that uncompromising punk attitude of his and merging with a mix of reggae, soul, hip-hop and so much more throughout this new outing, 'Different Gravy' aims to cement him as one of the more adventurous names doing the rounds, creating something genuinely surprising and enjoyable throughout. It may not be to everyone's taste, but for those looking for something that truly stands out and breaks almost every convention you can think of, 'Different Gravy' is the record for you.    1:09:50 (MP3 | Pop-up)

It’s their first in eight years and is out April 25 via Transgressive Records, and features contributions from Iggy Pop, Nadine Shah, Jessica Winter and Ewen Bremner (Trainspotting‘s Spud). The album includes their recent single “The Sign of a Man” and they’ve just shared a second, electro-funk number “Give Me More.” Says Saoudi, “Even god would lose his innocence in Yorkshire. Donzii  Station   Favoriting Station Single  gladugly  2024  Named after an Italian speedboat company - corrupted with an extra i - Miami's Donzii was started by vocalist Jenna Balfe and musician Dennis Fuller. Their pos-punk vision is a unity of go-hard industrial bangers, darklly ambient balladry, and new takes on the funk traditions of No Wave. Formed in 2015 during jam sessions at a dilapiidated suburban mansion from the '70s, the Donzii galaxy has included a number of supporting musicians over the years, helping to form their poly-blend of electronics, bass guitar, '80s utopian guitar and vocalist Balfe's hauntingly spirited vocals. Inspired by the full range of feelings on planet Earth, from the darkest corners to the sunniest days, Balfe and Fuller are allergic to trends but resolutely of the moment. Donzii is a therapeutic exercise in sincere and honest expression, a confrontation with demons, a celebration of getting lost. In many ways Donzii is not a normal band. But, as Balfe says, there is one rule of all great muusiic that they follow: "We do it so people can dance."    1:16:42 (MP3 | Pop-up)
Treeboy & Arc  Role Models (Adult DVD RMX)   Favoriting Life Preserver Extended  Treeboy & Arc  2022  Leeds is again proving that it has the latest and greatest of emerging post-punk and art-rock talent. Originally coming to the forefront of the scene in 2019 through the iconic post-punk label Speedy Wunderground, the group has slowly formed a refined sound that resembles the classic greats like Gang of Four, whilst also combining a lot of modern elements from bands such as Squid, incorporating a lot of electronic elements as a canvas for the hectic guitars and the driving basslines. Theirs is a unique sense of displeasure with the modern world, engulfed beautifully in the waves of madness of the instrumentation....    1:21:26 (MP3 | Pop-up)
Marie Madeleine  Swimming Pool - Edit   Favoriting Swimming Pool - Edit Single  Libertalia Music  2022  Marie Madeleine's voice rises more than ever, ardent and scandalous, around a deep, funereal bass groove carried by synthesizers as acidic as they are melancholic. The duo formed by Diana Kill (lead singer, keyboard) and Alfred Moon (lead singer, keyboard, drum machine and seqences) tell stories infused with darkness and sensuality. Passion, according to Marie Madeleine, is made up of songs that go wrong, dissidence and ecstasy, where the feminine always wins.    1:25:02 (MP3 | Pop-up)

Pylon  Danger   Favoriting Gyrate  DB records  1980  "In the late 1970’s Athens, Georgia was buzzing with a raw but sophisticated music scene. Traditional southern rock had been the Georgia musical export for years before but the turn of the decade began producing new sounds from bands like the B-52’s, REM and Alt Rock luminaries, Pylon. //// Before they were a band, Pylon were art-school students at the University of Georgia: four kids invigorated by big ideas about art and creativity and society. Pylon was less a band, however, and more of an art project, which meant they had very specific goals in mind as well as an expiration date. While their time together as a band was short lived (1979-1983), Pylon had a lasting influence on the history of rock and roll. Throughout their brief history, they were able to create influential work that would help foster the post-punk and art-rock scene of the early 80s.. Artists like R.E.M., Gang of Four, Sonic Youth, Sleater-Kinney, Interpol, Deerhunter and many more claim inspiration from the band. //// In 1980 the band released its first record, Gyrate and began touring across the country in support of the release. The band would soon develop a following across the country and specifically in the bustling music scene in New York City. One of their earliest gigs was opening for the Gang of Four in the big apple. Following the critical acclaim of their debut release, Pylon went back into the studio. While in the studio they gleefully pulled their songs apart and put them back together in new shapes, revealing a band of self-proclaimed non-musicians who had transformed gradually but noticeably into real musicians. The resulting album, Chomp was barely off the press when Pylon were booked to open a run of dates for a hot new Irish band called U2 (after previously playing two arena shows with them in the month leading to the album release). Most bands would have jumped at the opportunity, but Pylon were skeptical. At a critical point in the life of Pylon, they opted to become a cult band rather than stretch their defining philosophy too far. //// “We fully intended Pylon to be an almost seasonal thing that we were gonna do for a minute and then get on with our lives,” says Curtis Crowe, drummer for the band. “But it just never went away. It still doesn’t go away. There’s a new subterranean class of kids that are coming into this kind of music, and they’re just now discovering Pylon. That blows my mind. We didn’t see that coming.”    1:39:54 (MP3 | Pop-up)

Consumables  Emotional Speedball   Favoriting Infinite Games  We Are Time  2025  From Culture Addicts... "“Infinite Games was born from a standoff with an ex-bandmate and the realization that some battles aren’t meant to be won. The real goal isn’t victory—it’s endurance. The moment you feel that, rather than just know it, you break through into something boundless.” – Kyle Crew ////// Co-written and produced by Bodega’s Ben Hozie, Infinite Games captures the struggle for control in a world that feels anything but predictable. It’s an album about power, resistance, and the tension between order and chaos. //// Consumables aren’t just another NYC art punk band—they’re a force. Their electrifying live shows have built them a reputation for unfiltered intensity. Frontman Kyle Crew stands tall, exuding a sharp-eyed confidence that commands attention, a presence that fuels every track on the album./////// The Philosophy Behind Infinite Games Inspired by James P. Carse’s book Finite and Infinite Games, the album’s central question is simple: are you playing to win, or playing to keep going? Finite games have rules, winners, and losers. Infinite games never end—the goal is to stay in the game. Crew puts it bluntly: “So much unnecessary suffering happens when a person plays a finite game in an infinite game scenario.” /////// Across twelve tracks, Consumables wrestle with these ideas through a blistering mix of post-punk anthems and slacker-infused melodies. Great Design takes on the friction between technology, selfhood, and authenticity. Ten Toes Down digs into the high-stakes drama of keeping a relationship alive. /////// Bassist Miles Fox and drummer Hector Guillen create a rhythm section that pulses with urgency. Guillen, who honed his chops in Panama’s prog scene, and Fox, whose synth-pop leanings add a striking contrast to Crew’s wiry punk instincts, deliver some of the album’s most gripping moments. On Emotional Speedball, their tight, unpredictable interplay mirrors the highs and lows of lust. Tracks like Dry Rot and Messages thrive on rhythmic elasticity, Fox summing up modern disconnection in one line: “complex motivations, not motivated.”" https://consumables.bandcamp.com/  *   1:48:57 (MP3 | Pop-up)

Mein  Empty Sun   Favoriting MIIEN  Fuzz Club  2025  2nd preview (released Feb 20) from April's forthcoming full-length. "Since their inception, MIEN has been a confluence of diverse musical influences and shared histories. The seeds of this collaboration were planted back in 2004 when Rishi Dhir, known for his work with Elephant Stone, crossed paths with Alex Maas of The Black Angels during a serendipitous encounter at SXSW. This meeting sparked a friendship and a series of collaborations. Around the same time, Rishi met John Mark Lapham of The Earlies, whose electronic and production expertise would become a cornerstone of MIEN's sound. Robb Kidd (Alex Maas, Golden Dawn Arkestra) joined the band on drums in 2018. These connections eventually led to the formation of MIEN, a band that seamlessly blends their varied musical backgrounds into a unique sonic tapestry. //////// Recorded between Montreal, Abilene and Austin, Texas, ‘MIIEN’ captures MIEN’s unique creative process. Most songs began as simple ideas—a loop, a vocal phrase, or a groove—passed between members and meticulously layered. John Mark Lapham, the band’s “musical alchemist,” transformed these sketches into fully realized compositions, adding bold textures and dynamic shifts. Alex Maas’s hauntingly beautiful vocals bring a dark yet alluring dimension to the sound, elevating each track with his distinctive presence. //////// The album’s genesis reflects MIEN’s boundary-pushing spirit. The band’s collaborative workflow sees individual sketches evolving as each member contributes their distinct sonic palette. “It’s an organic process,” notes Rishi Dhir. “A simple idea can become something monumental when we each put our stamp on it.” The creative journey was heightened during key in-person sessions, such as an intensive recording period in Austin during South by Southwest. These rare opportunities for the band to work together in the same space added a dynamic immediacy to several tracks." https://mien.bandcamp.com/  *   2:02:01 (MP3 | Pop-up)

I was fortunate to see Ian Dury and the Blockheads. Ian had lots to offer and the band was great.

They were the opening for Lou Reed. After a couple of Lou Reed tunes, the 4 of us looked at each other and quickly realized we were all ready to leave. Reed was just a cranky bitch after the blow out Blockheads party and we druthered to not have the party diminished.
