https://www.nytimes.com/2021/03/08/dining/best-bagels.html?unlocked_article_code=1.6E4.tySO.3FwA4lW7KONm&smid=url-share

They're good, but probably not worth a headline. They opened a space larger than the one featured in the article not too long ago, five blocks from my house. A mile or away, a new joint, Bageltopia, is at least as good; not half a mile north of me, Hella Bagels, is also decent. But better are the bagels at an old standby cafe in Oakland, Beauty's Bagels, now Wise Sons.

Dined Thai vegan last night at Phil Gelb's flat. The menu:

Fried vegetables with Chef Pon's special sauce
Vegetarian shark fin soup
Green papaya salad
Pad Kee Mao
Asparagus with shiitake
Tempeh Kra Pow
Massamun curry
Rice
Dessert: Sticky rice with mango with salted coconut sauce and peanuts

Phil is preparing to expatriate to Thailand, but in the meantime, he performs on Buchla synthesizers with none other than Fred Lonberg-Holm, who relocated not long ago the Bay Area.

The best bagel I ever had was in Jerusalem, where freshly baked bagels are placed not in bins but on pegs. It looked like a loop of sisal rope, was heavily seeded, and would take a steady hand and level eye to slice, if that was your aim. It was meant to be eaten as was, maybe while walking. It was not one of these puffy decadent pillows atop which to lay one's self-indulgent fantasies that foodies gibber over today. I don't know, maybe given where it came from, I should embrace the floofy, oversized and overpriced "let me wait in a long line for you to make it for me just the way I like it" bagel of present-day New York as the way of peace and comity. Yet I long for the bagel of affliction, the crusty knot my forefathers ate on their way to the sweatshop.
