Favoriting March 23, 2025: Poo-Sun and Pike

Oopsie! I very foolishly believed the NYC Jazz Record's birthday listing - the only one saying that Tokyo-born pianist Masabumi Kikuchi's birthday is March 23. Um, it's October 19. -sigh- Oh well, too late, I've been hammering away at this for weeks and never even checked the date! But "Poo" will get some cake regardless. Mr. Pike shouldn't mind some distinguished company on his b-day. Kikuchi said: “I never felt virtuosic at all, in my life, even for a moment,” Why? “Because I don’t have any technique. So I have had to develop my own language.”
Detroiter Dave Pike hauls his vibraphone and marimba along to the Club to groovy up the place for a couple hours. It's a five-hour ertravaganza - or ordeal, depending on yer stomach.

Dry Red Truth

2oz Glen Passaic
1oz Italian sweet vermouth
page of Gore Vidal
lemon

Fold page of Gore Vidal in half lengthwise, turn 90 degrees clockwise, and fold again. Open Vidal into a cone and place in mouth of a beaker. Moisten Vidal all over with vermouth, allow to run through into beaker, and discard. Fill beaker with ice. Pour Glen Passaic through vermouth-moistened Vidal into beaker. Discard Vidal. With a glass rod, stir three times, again clockwise, and strain into a chilled coupe. Cut a fresh swath of lemon zest, twist over coupe to dispense oils, wipe over rim of glass. Serve very cold and without zest.

Unnecessary post of the day :

Munster, Munster-géromé, or Minschterkaas, is a soft cheese with a strong taste and aroma, made mainly from milk first produced in the Vosges, between the Alsace, Lorraine and Franche-Comté regions in France. The name "Munster" is derived from the Alsatian town of Munster, where, among Vosgian abbeys and monasteries, the cheese was conserved and matured in monks' cellars. "Géromé", a variant from munster, comes from the Vosgien patois pronunciation of the town of Gérardmer, located on the Lorrain side of the Vosges mountains, where it originates.

Very glad to have my ears opened to his work, and we can all celebrate him again when his actual birthday comes around!
