Nice, last spring I was hanging out at the Echo Lake dog park with my mutt when we decided to walk up the hill to the nearby soccer field. We encountered a stage that said "Monterey Folk Festival 1963." A few weeks later, we visited the same spot and the stage was renamed "Newport Folk Festival 1965." We strolled around backstage and saw the repro vintage posters. I was invited to be an extra in the film but sadly, I started a new job and I couldn't take off from work.

Film could’a used more Woody Guthrie. About twice as much woody and fewer pole lamps. They went a little wild with pole lamps in the Art Department. Every scene a pole lamp! In 1965 you would see crap from the 20’s 30’s 40’s 50’s and so on.

& not enough candle light. Recall LSD was perfectly legal until about 1968 & I did not see BOB do anything in the film but drink beer and smoke cigarettes. Other than that film was OK

i hate it when people argue about what's punk or not. they've done it to the point where it doesnt mean anything anymore. it's pretty annoying. i think of myself as a part time punk (inspired by the televsion personalities song)

I think of TheClash as stoned poets - oddly enuff. They didn't hand down Answers - even their bandname was honest about ambiguity & uncertainty... In 'Philosophy of Modern Song' - Dylan includes 'London Calling' as a great Song - & says Punk was all angry ...but the Clash were always desperate.

The DIY ethos carried over to post-punk and that's where things got very interesting.
A lot of new groups were lamped in under the banner however there were only two types of radio stations in the US, R&B and Pop.
After that massive creative output things started mixing and here we are. Better for it.

...it took a *long time* for TheClash to filter to a lot if us in the USA ? ...Whereas - you had the one piSToLS LP - it was like the Doll's 1st. Or ...was for me in smalltown NewHampshuh late 1970s anyhow...
Of course they say New Wave was what they called the New Rawk so the old guard didn't reflexively reject it here ...Robert Plant said when Nirvana for to #1 - the U.S. finally had its own Punk. Absurd in one sense - but in terms of the Charts exactly right. Even also called 'Never Mind'...

...odd for me to consider the path from Punk to Alternative (...& - in the presence of efd even ! :D ...) ...as what Charted was *never* too relevant to me - except in terms of what distribution I had access to - & the fortunes of the Artists themselves... I found a Bunnymen cassette ...Teardrop Explodes I didn't know til 10 years later...

I saw a lot of the new bands on SNL and immediately felt the power - this was new! And it was our time.
I went to art high school in NYC in the early 80s. Most days we would go check out new music and maybe pick up some 45s all around the city.
Soon enough we got a band together and went to Hilly Krystel with a demo. Playing CBGB on school nights. It was an amazing time, the road seemed open if you wanted to DIY.

I thing all the youth felt a bit like that. I commuted from south Bklyn everyday and that was like going through a door in the back of my closet. My neighborhood was a little stuck in time and I was not a Sinatra/Mel Torme fan (sue me!). I can clearly see that I had to go out and find it myself with some clues (Creem, SPIN, fanzines etc) the thing what I was looking for wasn't far.
