Strummer came up a hippie in the late 60s, maybe that is the reason he emphasized hope. Try again, this time keep the message clear and present. Those lyrics over time are timeless and very human.

i really like strummer's solo stuff. not musically as much as big audio dynamite (which i love) but i do really like his lyrics and how his views of the world never changed. my favorite is johnny appleseed.

He also was exposed to different cultures being born in Turkey as his father was in the overseas bureau. That kind of immersion can change your home politics.
Johnny Appleseed is a great song, I cried the first time I heard it, was so stoked he was in it again.
Yalla Yalla is great too.
BAD was a great band! I saw them at Roseland - fan for life.
Also saw Joe front The Pogues on Hell's Ditch tour which gave me chills.

i definitely think it's interesting how strummer grew up as a relatively well off kid and was given a chance to have a normal life, but was like, "nah." he really wanted to change things.
i'll give yalla yalla a listen. i feel like i haven't fully immersed myself in strummer's solo stuff.

Ya know I picked up that Strummer box set a few summers ago and dug deep.
If you look it up, his last show before he passed was a charity show for a firehouse in his neighborhood, Mick Jones came out and played a few Clash songs with Joe - it is fantastic! You know why.
