According to Howard Kaylan's book, when the Turtles met the Beatles, Lennon was making disparaging remarks about "Happy Together", and the Turtles' guitarist took it as a personal insult, leading to an argument accentuated with John's withering elitist putdowns. I probably mentioned this before, but Tobacco Road was a staple in the Cryan Shames live sets for year in 60s. They did a 13 minute version, as I remember it. Never recorded it but I have a live tape and the guys said it WAS their go to for playing every concert.
