A combination of collage, new experimental records and other bits and bobs, Mid-Valley Mutations is a tour through the mind of Austin Rich, who has been broadcasting in some form since 1998. Heavily influenced by Dr Demento, Don Joyce and old fashioned College Radio, Austin creates Audio Essays on a variety of subjects, and even just plays records, from time to time. Sometimes Live music and Interviews will grace the program, helping create a situation where you don't really know what you're going to hear, when you tune in. What you need to know is when you enter the Mid-Valley region, be prepared for the Musical Mutations... in whatever form they take.

↳ Song: "L'Éléphant" by "Tom Tom Club"
The elephant and the hippopotamus
Disguised themselves as men.
They walked to the beautiful village,
Walked, walked, walked, walked

On the path, they met
The children of men
And women, who were running,
Running, running, running, running

As they ran, the women were crying,
Crying fat tears.
Large drops, big fat tears, were
Falling, falling, falling, falling

The elephant and the hippopotamus
Wanted to know what was the matter,
Wanted to know the reason they were
Crying, crying, crying, crying.

A terrified child
Stopped to speak with them.
His mouth opened, but he remained
Mute, mute, mute, mute.

*"Beasts, Take off your costumes", OR "Take off your stupid costumes",
Sang to them the birds.
**Pipits, screech owls, and owls were
Singing, singing, singing, singing:

"It is war, the war of men.
They have quarreled among themselves.
All around, they want to kill,
Kill, kill, kill, kill"

Kill, kill, kill, kill
Kill, kill, kill, kill
Kill, kill, kill, kill
Kill, kill, kill, kill

The gent behind "Tribe Tapes" is doing their damnedest to track down a lot of old 80's and 90's noise artists, and then re-issuing their work. (Mostly digitally, but there are limited run CDs and tapes, too.) Tribe Tapes is going a long way toward helping preserve the rapidly disappearing cassette art of the 80's and 90's.

As Trump announced looking into changes into how the post office functions, I worry that mail art will have yet another set-back. Already I have trouble sending mail to "nicknames" and people who use something other than their real name. I've had some packages and mail not delivered because of a "mail art" component I added. I used to have two boom boxes when I was around 10 years old. One would have a cassette of an instrumental rap song, and the other I would record into the aux mic that was built in. I had no idea what a mixer was, so I would cut up tapes and try to splice them to fashion a crossfade effect. I had amusing results.

I was talking earlier about how there is something about recordings from the late 70's / early 80's that just "sound" good. I'm sure it's the analog gear and whatnot, but there's a part of me that has been trying to quantify it in other ways. I've been trying to write an essay about it, but I don't have anything useful to say yet.

No, you nevеr asked no one for life
But here you are in somebody else's world

Regardless, Metropolis holds up astonishingly well, for a nearly 100 year old movie. It's about automation and humanity losing it's soul to machinery and the working class being manipulated by the ruling class... that sounds like now if you ask me.

On the subject of movies: Marla just got the 4K BluRay of Nosferatu, the new one that came out not long ago. It has another 30 minutes of footage, putting it solidly in the three hour mark. I'm only seen Metropolis twice, and I remember there being differences between the two. And I've read that since I saw it last they have released a longer, more comprehensive version, which does little re-creations of the missing footage with photos and text. I imagine the newest version is the best, as I bet it still has all the stuff I've seen, and all the stuff that was lost and now found, too. But again: maybe in two sittings? I hear it's long.

It has something to do with the "Satanic Mode" of song composition. The Catholic church wrote detailed notes on what chord progressions "evoked the devil." A lot of metal bands and early cultists intentionally wrote songs in those "modes" to make them more evil.
