I would never abuse it. I always had a terrible propensity to upper respiratory infections and even as a kid it was the prescribed drug of last resort when I had pneumonia, bronchitis, and secondary tracheitis from coughing. It's almost impossible to get it prescribed now, and I'm keeping my stash of 2 or 3 doses in case I get COVID again.

Also, two other things: It wouldn't surprise me if most "real" drank is just shit with fentanyl in it versus actual hydrocodone and antihistamine syrup and also, the very smell, mouth feel, etc of the real thing brings back a flood of memories and emotions....got my first near-lethal pneumonia at 11 months old. I smell that hydrocodone syrup and I'm 4 years old again, and I can smell the Vick's Vapor Rub and hear the cold-water vaporizer that my folx set up in my bedroom. I can see my Dad in his blue terry bathrobe changing out the water and re-spraying my room with old school Dristan spray, long discontinued....sigh.

It's powerful stuff but necessary sometimes. I once spent Xmas Eve in the DOCS place on 23rd Street after coming back from a weekend with my Dad and Stepmom. I had such a bad cough that my Dad's codeine syrup from Boots -- he had taken a business trip to the UK -- didn't do SHIT to help me sleep. I coughed so hard that I got a nosebleed. I had a tracheal infection. Not even the purple drank helped; needed an inhaler and a VERY tiny dose of oxycontin at night to sleep just to bring down the inflammation. And this was only about 11 years ago; I wasn't a kid.

Yup. I can see it in my mind's eye. You have to refrigerate it and it came with a little dropper/spoon combo and still does. Chalky and pink, thinner than Pepto-Bismol and smelled like strawberries. I had so, so many ear infections as a kid. It's a miracle that the tetracycline didn't stain my teeth; my late Mom's teeth had a few stripes, like tree rings, from it as a kid.
