Charles Mingus said jazz was a word invented to separate musicians from their money. Music for a Free World brings us together, drawing listeners to the healing power of smooth free jazz. Each week, surprise guests bring their own sides to spin and their instruments of choice to spontaneously jam.

Do you, William, consider yourself influenced by Coltrane? Or what you say were your original influences. Thanks so much for making spirituality a part of your music. Cheers and blessings to you.

Very interesting, using the instrument made by Kral but Kral (according to the bandcamp page) not part of the ensemble. Sound is excellent and sounds are excellent.

Hi free world and sound!
  2:48pm
Dean:

Album has a fun etymology:

classical Latin album blank tablet or noticeboard, official list or register, in post-classical Latin also (in album amicorum album of friends) specifically in sense 1a (1546 or earlier; frequently as a work title, especially in Dutch and German sources), use as noun of neuter singular of albus (adjective) white < the same Italic base as Umbrian alfu, Sabine alpum < the same Indo-European base as ancient Greek ἀλϕός alphos n., Old High German albiz swan.
  2:50pm
Dean:

I don't read "album" as a medium. I read it as a species of work.
  2:55pm
Dean:

Speaking of arriving late, Cecil Taylor had trouble at the border getting to the Victoriaville festival a number of years ago. Marylin Crispell was slated to open for him, so Paul Plimley and John Oswald kindly opened for her, and then she played. By then Taylor had made it to town. An amazing evening, that gig.

I have to depart, alas, for a music lesson. Recorder. Trust me, my playing sounds like I'm playing whatever I want, but that's not in fact the case. We try to stick to Medieval, Renaissance, Baroque, then cheat once or twice with Henry Cowell.

Thanks for hosting the marvelous William Parker!

Haven't pulled this album out in quite a while. (But this isn't The Great Pretender, that was a version of The old Platters hit).
