I just Googled “Cleveland Clambake”, and I couldn't find anything NSFW.

Clambakes are a thing in the Syracuse area where I grew up. They would differ from clambakes anywhere else, because in Central NY, clambakes feature salt potatoes.

Central NY clambakes are quite SFW.

But I suspect I must be talking about a different kind of clambake. My mind is too pure to conceive of what that might be.

Totally agree, Letterman's first 5 years or so and Conan's earlier years were some of the best TV comedy you could find, and it was them doing it despite a lot of criticism from people who just didn't get what they were trying to do. It was good they gave Letterman the 12:30 am slot, that was the right audience for his comedy. And credit to Merrill Markoe who along with the other Letterman writers had a vision for a show that made fun of the whole format and had a warped enough take on everything that it worked. I saw the lineup for a festival in September where Fountains Of Wayne was playing, along with a handful of other 90's/00's bands whose lead singers are no longer alive, and honestly the FOW listing threw me a bit. On one side is the "it's all about the music", along with the band members often needing an income and touring is the only way to generate that in today's music biz. On the other side, it's odd in a way.
