Delta 5  You   Favoriting Anticipation/You  Rough Trade  1980  Love isn't always a bed of roses...or sometimes it's a bumpy start...but Love is Love...Like their Leeds brethren Gang of Four, Delta 5 dealt in funky disco-influenced post-punk with a mix of chic guitars, punk aggression from the Clash, breaks from James Brown records, and the bass from Funkadelic colliding to form the sound of both Leeds bands. Delta 5 wrote songs about failed relationships and the shortcomings of romance—the literal excitement and disappointment in the other sex, relationship, or partner. Songs like “Anticipation,” “You,” and “Try” examine sexual dynamics in microscopic details of personal insecurity and desire....    0:05:36 (MP3 | Pop-up)

Kleenex  Ain't You   Favoriting Kleenex EP  Sunrise  1978  iLiPUT, initially known as Kleenex, were a Swiss punk rock band formed in Zürich in 1978. The band experienced numerous line-up changes throughout their existence, with bassist Klaudia Schiff being the only constant member of the band over their entire history. Their methods of composition were peculiar even for punk. One was extreme repetition, in which a song would progress by repeating a few minimal bars over and over, starting slowly and speeding up each time, as if running up a hill and then tumbling down it. The band punctuated their music with things like whistling and saxophones and kazoo sounds. Their guitar chords had a soured edge, and their lopsided call-and-response vocals alternately evoked stoic Patti Smith and a wayward school choir. Most crucial were the befuddlingly shredded human voices—grunted, exasperated, bloodcurdlingly shrieked, pitched so high as to pierce into the reddest red—which sounded more like a Yoko Ono Fluxus experiment than anything resembling pop.    0:16:49 (MP3 | Pop-up)
Keel Her  Wanna Fuck?   Favoriting Keel Her  Critical Heights  2014  Keel Her is the musical recording project of English musician Rose Keeler-Schaffeler. She is originally from Winchester and currently resides in London. Keeler-Schaffeler began writing and recording "bedroom music" in 2007 for therapeutic reasons. As a child she learnt the violin but also plays guitar, bass and keyboards. She has described her writing process as being like a "stream of consciousness"...she has collab'd with R. Stevie Moore and Tim Burgess. When not making music, she works as an as an independence assistant for a hospital. Which is very cool.    0:19:50 (MP3 | Pop-up)
Spinnerette  Ghetto Love   Favoriting Spinnerette  Queen of Hearts  2009  Spinnerette is the only studio album by Spinnerette. This was a return to music for Brody Dalle, former singer of the Distillers after a long hiatus. This album was pretty much universally panned, earning only a 2.7 from Pitchfork...however this song emerges as a bona fide banger. For me...at least.    0:20:53 (MP3 | Pop-up)
The Intelligence  Dating Cops   Favoriting Deuteronomy  In the Red  2007  As a title for the Intelligence's third album, Deuteronomy hints that it's time to lay down some laws in frontman Lars Finberg's recurring dystopian mayhem. Most notable for contributing vitriolic vocals to post-apocalyptic fetishists the A-Frames, the multi-instrumentalist Finberg has quit his job as doomsday herald to devote undivided attention towards Intelligence, which had previously subsisted on scrappy home recordings and spotty touring. Recorded in an actual studio, Deuteronomy's easily Finberg's tidiest, most civilized work, and it even retains most of his signature post-punk bile.    0:24:26 (MP3 | Pop-up)
A.R.E Weapons  Just a Crush   Favoriting Modern Mayhem  Defend Music Inc.  2007  A.R.E. Weapons is an American electroclash band from New York City. The band was formed in 1999 by Matthew McAuley, Brain F. McPeck, and Ryan Noel. Their live shows are noted for their aggressiveness and confrontational style. Early reviewers placed them in the no wave category. Rough Trade was encouraged to sign the band after Pulp's Jarvis Cocker heard them live. Before the release of their self-titled 2003 album, synthesizer player Thomas Bullock was replaced by their manager Paul Sevigny (brother of actress Chloë Sevigny). Guitarist Ryan Noel died in 2004 of a heroin overdose. The remaining members recorded their second album, Free in the Streets, which was released in 2005.    0:25:45 (MP3 | Pop-up)

Mekons  War Economy   Favoriting Horror  Fire Records  2025  Out April 4, this is one of four songs pre-released so far. // "'War Economy’ shivers in the cold of such Boroughs spiked one-liners: “Clinical coercion will not achieve dominance!” Sounding like it's straight off a Jenny Holzer neon sign (she of Abuse Of Power Comes As No Surprise), it’s held together by a disgruntled swaggering riff that underpins an explosion of disquiet." //////// "Mekons, formed in 1977 Leeds, England, have an improbable history – a surprising & influential embrace of folk & country music; with occasional forays into the art world. They work collaboratively & collectively with everything credited to the band, never to individuals. Their mind-boggling output blurs the lines between high & low art while remaining bold, unpredictable & true to the punk ethos." https://mekons.bandcamp.com/  *   0:39:21 (MP3 | Pop-up)
Anika  Hearsay   Favoriting Abyss  Sacred Bones  2025  From the upcoming album “Abyss”, out on April 4, 2025 on Sacred Bones Records. //////// "“The state of the world just feels like an abyss right now,” Anika explained of the album’s inception in a press release. It was recorded live with minimal overdubs and is billed as being heavier, angrier, and more raw than its predecessor. That all comes through on “Hearsay,” a rocker brimming with pent-up anxiety, on which Anika sings: “And yesterday’s papers they line my bird cage/ And you’re telling me tales to get your own way/ And you’re making up stories to push your narrative/ And you’re making up tales to be provocative.” Anika says further: //////// "This song is about media moguls — about the power of the media, whether social, TV or beyond — we are as much under its spell as we ever were and some nasties are exploiting it for their own gains. Parasites feeding off the blood of the public — PJ Harvey inspired for sure."" Anika - Hearsay (Official Video)  *   0:42:16 (MP3 | Pop-up)
Squid  Cowards   Favoriting Cro-Magnon Man  Warp Records  2025  From Paste: "Squid Tackle a Universal Evil on Cowards ///////// Cowards is the ideal album that a band in Squid’s position would put out: one that builds on the ideas that defined in their first two albums, but doesn’t stay comfortable in what they know best. //////// "When you’re young and feel trapped in the shrink-wrapped, small-minded town that you grew up in, getting out seems like the most alluring plan of action as soon as you have the means. While fantasizing about the outside, the very real and inevitable flaws of your bucket-list destinations don’t pop out at you the way they would to a native; you’re unable to detect the evil that can lie beneath wherever you try to escape to. For Squid, after spending the early half of their still-mounting career raising Krautrock-infused post-punk hell in retaliation to their hometown of Brighton’s issues and vices, their third album Cowards sees the quartet reflecting on their world tour revelations now that they’ve had the chance to broaden their view. They tackle the horror of looking inward—both infrastructurally and interpersonally—realizing that some original sins are inexorable, no matter how hard you try to outrun them. ///////// Cowards is cunningly meticulous in coming to this revelation, while still seething with the pulsating, folded anger that defined Squid’s earlier albums, 2023’s O Monolith and 2021’s Bright Green Field. It plays with tension and worldbuilding; burning questions regarding morality, depersonalization and the flaws of global culture outside of Britain are slowly exhumed through vocalist Ollie Judge’s impressively restrained volume control as the album creeps forward. He still has his moments of trademark squawks, but the impossible answers to the inquiries that fall out of his mouth as hopeless drawls are more effective in their uncomfortability." https://squiduk.bandcamp.com/  *   0:46:33 (MP3 | Pop-up)
Sacred Paws  Turn Me Down   Favoriting Jump Into Life  Rock Action / Merge Reocrds  2025  "Jump Into Life" is out March 28. From blog 'Line Of Best Fit' --> "Glasgow/London duo Sacred Paws have returned to the fold after a five year hiatus, announcing their new album, Jump Into Life, alongside the release of first single, "Turn Me Down". ///////// Released late last year, the band's first single in five years, “Another Day” introduced the thematic thread, of remaining positive in the face of heartbreak. This thread is continued on new single, "Turn Me Down", which the band says is "about the rawness of rejection". ///////// "It’s something I reckon everyone feels at some point in their life - those moments when however irrational it might seem to feel so deeply the feeling is still there. It felt cathartic to write a song about it with quite dramatic rhythms and a big vocal melody," they add. "We really loved working on the vocal melodies for this song," they say. "The harmonies took a while to figure out as it’s not something we have done a lot in the past but the singing added something really epic. The lyrics are so simple and raw that it really needed to pack a punch as a song.” ////////// "“It’s definitely a Sacred Paws record but it feels a bit older and wiser,” the pair explain of their new chapter. “We took a few years working on the songwriting and pushed ourselves creatively. We wrote a lot in that time, but we made sure every song had something that we fell in love with.”" /////// The video for this song is by Becky Manson. Horseface  En Cadu   Favoriting A song is a dream (and dreams are real!)  Sing A Song Fighter  2024  "Dreams come true (sometimes)... The label Sing a song fighter is celebrating it's 10-year anniversary as a one man DIY label and founder Karl Jonas have realised a long time dream: To put together an unique compilation with all the unreleased goodies he has recieved or heard from bands/artists somehow related to the label. //// This mighty musical document contains demos. home recordings, live recordings, outtakes and edits that really deserves to be heard and loved and not be hidden/forgotten on an old hard drive in the basement or in the back of a single person's mind." /////// "Horseface plays rhythmic post punk, combining drum machines with acoustic drums and percussion. The band tries to apply the openness and experimentalism from the DIY explosion of the early eighties with contemporary influences and perspectives. ////// Their second full length album was mixed and co-produced by Daniel Fagerström (Viagra Boys, Jenny Wilson etc.) and split-released by the labels Kopotikop, Joteskii groteskii and Sing a Song Fighter. The resulting sound is oozing with effects from Fagerström’s dubwise production. Melodic motifs slowly evolve while the steady pulse of the bass anchors the songs. The vocals are in Finnish, Sweden’s largest minority language."  *   0:54:00 (MP3 | Pop-up)
Devo  Snowball (Demo Alternate Version)   Favoriting Recombo DNA  Rhino Handmade, Warner Archives  1980 /2000  A little later into my Devo fanhood; I realised how much I loved this aong. For sone reason, it's the early demo version that really brought this home to me. I don't know why it leapt out at me in that nascent stage the most; perhaps it's the fact that it's a sad song and that the tentative nature of its early playing underlies the fragility of the theme. Ir maybe the connection if the singer to the lyrics is more fresh when the sing is newer. Regardless, a sad and Sisyphusian Devo song. //// From the liner notes --- "...Taken from a reel labeled as "master mixes" from a recording studio named Modern Music. They are all demos [the songs on the reel], rather fully-realized demos at that, which give a wondrous glimpse into what the 'Freedom Of Choice' album was originally envisioned by the band to be..."    0:58:47 (MP3 | Pop-up)

HOUSE Of ALL  Oh What Is Love Made For   Favoriting HOUSE Of ALL SOULS  Tiny Global Recordings  2025  Out today! A handful of hours ago the band were online in an interactive listening party... Sorry to have missed that. And oh, what a band they are! //// "A valentine for black hearts! An electric array of magic sounds! The shock return of a missing legend! //// The surprise formation of HOUSE Of ALL by five former members of The Fall was bound to provide some pleasant surprises, not the least of which being the creation of an identity distinct from that of any specific Fall line-up, and here the band offer an steep evolution of sound of their two previous albums . . . darker, more elliptic and can we say it? A more mystical sum of talents than most groups ever manage. //// They’ve kept their open door policy to former members of The Fall and expanded it. Phil Lewis, who's stepped in live for Pete Greenway, makes his studio debut, and the long-lost Karl Burns has emerged from his mystery lair to add a third set of drums to the line-up . . . besting The Glitter Band by 50%! How this will work live has yet to be determined, but the band has already scheduled dates in Spring, 2025. //// House Of All Souls is somewhat more psychedelic than its predecessors, and despite seven players, each with his own particular style, the songs and production are shockingly cohesive. From the breakneck pace of first tune, Tempest And Storm to the superb album closer, Born At Dawn And Dead At Sunset, there's quite a lot to unpack - it's an album-lover's album, each track magnificent in its own way and impossible for us to pick a fave from the lot of 'em. //// Plenty has been written about The Fall, whose 50th birthday is just a few years off, but rare is the group with an equally perverse and persuasive influence in that period. When HOUSE Of ALL debuted, Martin Bramah remarked on it being "part of the Fall family continuum" - a matter of actual fact, given the pedigree of its members. With this, HOUSE Of ALL's third full-length album, it's proven fact that the bright lights of those multiple talents behind the band have yet to dim." https://houseofall.bandcamp.com/  *   1:36:21 (MP3 | Pop-up)

Silver Apples  Lovefingers   Favoriting Silver Apples  Kappa  1968  Silver Apples were an American electronic rock group from New York, active between 1967 and 1970, before reforming in the mid-1990s. It was composed of Simeon (born Simeon Oliver Coxe III, June 4, 1938 – September 8, 2020), who performed on a primitive synthesizer of his own devising; and, until his death in 2005, drummer Danny Taylor. The duo were among the first to employ electronic music techniques outside of academia, applying them to 1960s rock and pop styles. //// As part of New York's underground music scene, the band released two albums—Silver Apples (1968) and Contact (1969)—to poor sales. They began recording a third album before a lawsuit by Pan Am, owing to the use of their logo in the artwork of Contact, forced the end of the group and its label Kapp in 1970. In the 1990s, German bootleg recordings of the band's albums raised their profile, and Simeon reformed the group with other musicians and released new music. //// In 1998, he reconnected with Taylor, and the two completed their original third LP The Garden (1998). After Taylor's death, Simeon continued releasing Silver Apples projects using samples of Taylor's drumming. //// "Silver Apples is the debut studio album by the American band Silver Apples. It was released in June 1968 by record label Kapp. It was the band's most successful original album, reaching 193 on the Billboard 200. //// The album was re-released in 1997 by MCA Records and was compiled with the band's second album, Contact. It has been critically acknowledged as a pioneering fusion of rock and electronic music. //// Adam Bunch of Crawdaddy! wrote in 2007: "Silver Apples is a record that reached far ahead of its time. It's not surprising then, in a year when the airwaves were still dominated by Motown and the Beatles (whose experimentation was tame by comparison), that it failed to garner much of an audience. Even now, nearly forty years later, the record sounds fresh and unconventional – in 1968 there simply wasn't anything else like it." The Vinyl Factory included the record as one of the best electronic albums of the 1950s and 1960s, calling the album "a stunning collection of rickety electronic grooves and hydraulic wheezes," noting that "the compositions are often harmonically static, giving the record a driving, hypnotic quality. There’s not a bum track on it."    1:45:16 (MP3 | Pop-up)
White Noise  My Game Of Loving   Favoriting An Electric Storm  Island Records  1968  White Noise are an English experimental electronic music band formed in London in 1968, after American-born David Vorhaus, a classical bass player with a background in physics and electronic engineering, attended a lecture by Delia Derbyshire, a sound scientist at the BBC Radiophonic Workshop. Derbyshire and Brian Hodgson, then both former members of electronic music project Unit Delta Plus, joined Vorhaus to form the band. //// In June 1969 White Noise released the groundbreaking album An Electric Storm on Island Records. The album was created using a variety of tape manipulation techniques, and used the first British synthesizer, the EMS Synthi VCS3. Amongst many oddities, the first track on the album, Love Without Sound, employed sped-up tape edits of Vorhaus playing the double bass to create violin and cello sounds. Although not initially commercially successful for Island, the album is now considered an important and influential album in the development of electronic music, namechecked by contemporary artists like The Orb and Julian Cope, influencing contemporary acts such as Broadcast, Add N to (X), and Secret Chiefs 3. Peter Kember of Spacemen 3 included 'Firebird' on his 2004 curated compilation Spacelines.    1:49:23 (MP3 | Pop-up)

The band's sound was also characterised by the alternating, contrasting vocal styles of Linda Steelyard and Mick Derrick." /////// Prolapse formed in the summer of 1991 at Leicester Polytechnic's Friday night disco, "with the aim of being the most depressing band ever". Of the six members—vocalists Mick Derrick and Linda Steelyard, guitarists David Jeffreys and Patrick Marsden, bassist Mick Harrison, and drummer Tim Pattison—only Harrison and Pattison had performed together. //// In a 1999 interview, Steelyard stated that the name was chosen "to indicate something undesirable in a miserable sort of way, rather than unsavoury. Unfortunately, we have come to realise that it makes some people think of arses." ///// "Ghosts of Dead Aeroplanes is the fourth album by the band Prolapse, released in May 1999 on Cooking Vinyl Records in the UK. The album was again produced by Donald Ross Skinner, who was now a fully fledged member of the band."    1:53:43 (MP3 | Pop-up)

It, Companion, is the better of the vday horror movies out, in my opinion...Heart Eyes starts strong and is overall worth seeing, but kind of loses steam around the midpoint, becomes less tongue in cheek about it's romcominess and more intent on being a Scream knock off on the horror side.

I think it's overrated. It's slick and well done, but it's a lot of rich white lady problems underneath.

↳ Song: "You" by "Delta 5"
Good morning everybody from the UK where is also 'gone midnight'.

One of the things I like about WFMU is the recognition given to this lot. Always overshadowed at the time by the Au Pairs, but I always greatly enjoyed them at the time, they were always a support act even then, often even 3rd on the bill.

Plus, that near nude red carpet stunt. At least when Marilyn Manson and Rose McGowan did that, they didn't half ass it by having her wear a coat most of the time and he looked in on it, rather just standing there looking like her body guard (divorce rumors are flying right now, by the way)
