The one thing I do miss about doing the show in the studio, live, is that you could actually listen to the DJ before you, and sync up the beginning of your show, much more easily, than you can remotely. You can still do it, but there's a flexibility to the studio that makes it much easier.

This song is saying things I didn't know I was trying to say.

I stopped trying to match what the previous DJ was doing because I'd be spending like 20 hours a week preparing sets and didn't want to be distracted. This would depend somewhat if i were at WZRD or WLUW. Sometimes I would follow a goth show on WLUW, and sometimes I'd talk to the DJ at WZRD and pull from the catalog based on their set, but generally, I like to try to be in the pilot seat.

There's always a number of factors that can make it not possible. But I think it was easier in the studio, in certain ways. You could get a sense of the show, talk to the DJ, and you already had to cue up your first track. You could change it up and slip in something else, to link from them to you. I always appreciated the challenge.

I did radio for 20+ hours during a blizzard once, and it reminded me of how I thought about radio before I did radio. I thought there was a team of DJs with big meetings and think tank vibes, and sort of couldn't help but feel as if they were all one polycephalic beast.
Avatar 11:31am
northguineahills:

sort of like whem djing at a club, the previous dj might be in totally different aural view then myself, but if i can listen to the dj as they're playing, i can make a seamless transition. the only radio i've done is wavefarm (and it's antecedent, free10point9), and pirate radio.

Yeah, in a bar or a club, I've definitely followed from Nine Inch Nails to Shangri-Las in a sort of exquisite corpse fashion within three songs and tried to make it work...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:33am
Austin Rich:

↳ northguineahills @11:31
I haven't DJed in clubs much, but I feel like it's the same. I was often DJing with a partner in situations like that, so we could relieve each other, give each other breaks, etc. So it was easier for us to collaborate on transitions. But it's sort of similar, I suspect.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:35am
Austin Rich:

↳ Arvo Zylo @11:30
I used to love picking up coverage shifts in the winter, and make a day out of doing radio. I never did more than eight hours in a row, and I would often cheat, playing an hour long track in the middle to go and get lunch. But those days are magical, just you and the DJ booth. I would have to prepare a lot more to do an 8 hour show again. I did a six hour show with das, Ninah and univac a year ago. But with that many others, it's very easy.
Avatar 11:37am
Arvo Zylo:

I was literally an insomniac. I got home at 6am from doing radio, checked my email to find that the station would be closed after 4pm due to a blizzard, emailed the station manager, grabbed some records, and went back. Those sorts of things rarely happen on purpose.

So often the case with those late-night shifts. I would sometimes arrive to an empty station - the person before forgot to show up - and then have to cover the gent after me, when I was on in the middle of the night. I'm glad I don't do that anymore, but there was something nice about having the station to yourself.

Avatar 11:50am
Arvo Zylo:

↳ northguineahills @11:46
I co-hosted a weekly "freeform DJ night" at a bar with two floors. That place also had goth nights, and I was invited sometimes to DJ those. I also did booking for a different bar, and booked DIY parties with friends. It was never prime time, but there were often enough people for it to be fun.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:52am
Austin Rich:

It would be nice to find the club that actually catered to all the different DJ nights every community needs. I still don't feel like there are any places in my town where I could hang out and really love the music they play. We've got cover bands and internet jukeboxes. The only time I've gone out in the last five years, I had to drive to other cities. There's just nothing to do here.
Avatar 11:54am
Arvo Zylo:

↳ Austin Rich @11:52
I can relate to that sense of stagnation. I like cities because even if I think most of what is happening is weak, there is enough movement to prevent stagnation.

The nice thing about small towns, sometimes, is that everyone from every scene will show up to certain things, just because there's not much happening. It doesn't always work out that way, though.

Here are my last vices I cannot shake: Cheap Street tacos, gyros from a cart, cheap thai food from a cart, and french fries. I'm sure the things I get are not great for me, but I cannot resist. I've trying to trade out apples from as many of those as I can, but... I am a simple man with strong urges for fried potatoes...
Avatar 12:29pm

If apples aren't organic, it's not that great of a trade. Apples and potatoes that aren't organic are the crops that get the most pesticides, as I understand it.

Being out and about requires adaptability, as we all know.

I had a good amount of junk food as a kid, so I don't care if I never have another French fry again. Tacos and Thai food, on the other hand, will always be tempting. I made a rare appearance at a Thai restaurant yesterday, actually.

We get our apples from the same farm we get our CSA, and I just slice 'em and eat 'em, so hopefully that's not terrible for me.

I _THINK_ I understand what's happening in Twin Peaks, but every once in a while I will remember a scene, and I won't be able to remember how it fits in, and then I start thinking more, and then I'm not so sure I know what's going on... and then I rewatch it.

I love to unpack movies and TV, but I also think that can be a bit of a red herring. Certainly there's a lot to think about and consider with something like Twin Peaks, but I wouldn't want to play that game if I didn't also just enjoy watching it on a surface level.

I don't want to seem anymore pompous than usual, but I've argued with people, and I enjoy it.

The concept of surrealism in general is fun, and the more rewarding art forms for me, specifically because it uses symbols and concepts that IMPLY meaning. I also like that it can come from the artist in a way that the artist interprets differently later, after the work is done.

I do think that using symbolism and surrealism in the right ways is the perfect way to accent your work, and I think Lynch does that very well. I wish more people would use that kind of stuff in more subtle ways, or in ways that don't dominate the film as much. I really like The Coen Brothers for that reason: their films are full of surreal symbols, but they aren't glaring, or obvious. You notice them after the fact, when you're thinking about it as a whole.

Antonioni is like that, too. I love his work, and he's subtle, but powerful.
