Enoch Light  From an old LP. 
Berthold Brecht  From around 1928 or 1928. The man himself. 
The Psychedelic Furs  Originally a 45 re-released in collection of obscure B-sides. Thanks to Craig Baldwin, Bradley Eros and Jeanne Liotta. 
Wolfgang Neuss  1958; This was the version frequently used by Ernie Kovacs on his tv show 
Marianne Faithfull  A live cabaret performance from a few years ago. 
Tito Puente  This version called “Jack the Knife” was one of two versions that I know of released by Puente. From an old LP. Special thanks to Drori Mondlak. 
Sammy Davis, Jr.  From an LP either from a Broadway version of the 1950s or a film made subsequently to that 1950s revival. 
Eartha Kitt  From a greatest hits cd. 
Wayne Newton  From a medley in a live album found in a Vegas junkstore. It may be one of those you could only buy at the casino where he played for years, one of the Hiltons. The availability is partly my fantasy. It may be more accessible than that. I don't remember the record label, but I don't think it was a major one. 
Dick Hymen  From an LP; one of at least 2 or 3 versions he recorded. Thanks to Rob Danielson. 
Gisela May  From an old LP from the DDR. Special thanks to Eve Heller. 
The Harmonicats  From an old scratchy LP 
Dagmar Krause  From a CD 
Peter Nero  From a scratchy LP, so I remember. 
Lotte Lenya  From an old Lenya sings Brecht and Weil lp. May have been re-released in Germany on CD. 
Ray Charles Singers  Another scratchy LP. I don't know that the divine Ray actually had anything to do with this. 
Luciano Castelli  From an obscure EP. Thanks to Fabio Roberti. 
Wolfgang Neuss  Again from that 1958 German production. This is actually the end of The 3-penny Opera. The Moritat, aka Mack the Knife, actually comes right at the beginning of the Opera. This ending is sung to the same tune and acts as a kind of ironic summation of the play. 
  Thanks again to Barbara Lattanzi who recorded the version you heard as background music to my announcements during the show. And thanks again to Rich Hazelton for an incredible job of human and technical engineering. And thanks to Rory at Earwax for information on obscure Reggae versions of Mackie I have not yet been able to locate. Sorry, I can't be more specific about the sources, almost all my lps are in boxes at the moment as are a good number of my cds. If you share this obsession, don't forget to do a search of the playlists of regular WFMU dj's. There are several fine versions to be found there. If anyone has any other versions, please let me know. I'd love to get copies and am happy to trade AIFF's or MP3s. At the top of my current wish list is the MacDonald's hamburger chain adaptation of the song to “Mac tonight” which ran in a series of tv commercials in the mid to late 1990s, or so I remember. I'm also especially interested in any French or Spanish language versions of the song. This is just the tip of the iceberg as far as my Mackie Messer archive goes. There are many fine versions I had to leave out, including Liberace's, Lawrence Welk's, etc. etc. If you wish to correspond, please email me at mrzero@panix.com and put “mack the knife” in the subject line.
