Devil's Dildo | Sedentary | ...Makes Me Cum! | Muddguts | 2020 | New York's Devil's Dildo makes "music for the maniacally minded". Based out of NYC, in the tradition of the city’s ’70s No Wave scene (which was initially inspired by the rejection of commercial new wave music), Devil’s Dildo are a mix of Punk, Metal, and Synth, all with a dash of theatrics. In the vein of Punk legends like Plasmatics, GG Allin, or Industrial team Chris & Cosey, Devil’s Dildo is a cabaret all their own, splattering horror, sexuality, and social satire all over the stage. "We were born in the pits of hell, spawned by the devil themselves. Satan gave us the names Debbie and DeeDee Dildo. We decided Devil’s Dildo would be appropriate, since we are spreading filth, lust, debauchery, so forth and so on. We are both extremely concentrated versions of our most evil and sexual selves. We dismantle ideologies of repressed sexuality. We critique stigmatized shame and wear our sexuality, and our queerness, proudly." | 0:02:20 (MP3 | Pop-up)
Speedwalker | so party. | so party. Single | Speedwalker Music | 2022 | I can't find anything about this band online. It's very disappointing. The only bio I can find is "avant garde Michael McDonald tribute act" and a picture of a 22 year old dude. This tune slaps. | 0:03:53 (MP3 | Pop-up)
Data Animal | Crime or Bust | Crime or Bust Single | Dedstrange | 2024 | Auckland / Berlin Techno Punks, Data Animal returns with a punch on their explosive new double single, "Crime or Bust"/"One Eyed Witness" out 10/18 -- only on Dedstrange. "Crime or Bust" delivers a relentless, pulse-pounding anthem of defiance, while "One Eyed Witness" features haunting vocals and ominous synth layers that build into a hypnotic, cinematic soundscape. With this release, Data Animal cements their place at the forefront of Berlin's post-punk electronic scene.. Perfect for fans of dark, edgy soundscapes. | * | 0:06:42 (MP3 | Pop-up) |
Jealous Yellow! | Pop Fiction | Czech Vampires | Erste Theke Tonträger | 2024 | Jealous Yellow hail from Seattle. „Czech Vampires” is a collection of songs conceived in a plague-ridden hostel off of Krymská street in Prague, District 10. It turns out that yellow has had an intriguing, though chequered, time. In the Middle Ages, Pastoureau argues, though some of its associations were positive — blond hair suggested aristocracy — it increasingly acquired a bad rep. It was the colour of Judas’s robe, standing for ‘envy, jealousy, duplicity, lying, treachery and madness’. | * | 0:09:26 (MP3 | Pop-up) |
DVTR | Pied de Poule | BONJOUR (BIS) | Lisbon Lux | 2024 | Montreal’s garage-synth-punk duo DVTR is set to drop their latest release, Bonjour (Bis), marking their first foray into vinyl and CD formats. This deluxe edition builds upon their 2023 debut EP, Bonjour, which propelled them from local upstarts to international tour veterans in less than a year. DVTR’s live shows are infamous for their raw energy and confrontational style. Known for unpredictable stage antics, they embody a blend of humour and rage that transcends language barriers. On Bonjour (Bis), they continue to explore themes of rebellion with tracks that touch on social issues ranging from anti-Olympics sentiment to critiques of authority, underscoring the group’s pointed, DIY ethos. Also, Pied De Poule translates to "Houndstooth" in case you were wondering... | * | 0:11:38 (MP3 | Pop-up) |
Puff Pieces | Money | Bland in D.C. | Lovitt Records | 2016 | In 2012, at the behest of Mike Andre, a reluctant Justin Moyer (E.D. Sedgwick/Supersystem) and Amanda Huron (Weed Tree/Caution Curves) were conscripted into helping Mike play and record some unrealized songs he had floating around. After a series of precarious fits and starts, the band coalesced into a semi-stable entity known as Puff Pieces in 2013 and began playing shows. Based on their experiences in various now-defunct bands (Amanda and Mike in Vertebrates, and Mike and Justin in Antelope), and long-term involvement in D.C.'s punk and noise scenes, Puff Pieces strives to destroy the bland hegemony of their city's condo-crazed culture with a mix of melody and nervous dissonance. | 0:15:59 (MP3 | Pop-up)

Chris Jack of the Routes is a treasure! The way that they interpret each of the songs is so well thought out. It’s not just a case of grab the song and ravage it with surf licks. Each has its own personality, making the album a delight from start to finish. To balance the grooving and shaking Whatever Happened To we have the last slow dance of You Say You Don’t Love Me, beautifully interpreted and adding to the lament of the original’s lyrics. It’s also a blast to hear how many of The Buzzcocks’ original riffs so easily translated into new forms...and a new release of covers is coming soon from the Routes so stay tuned!!!! |

Warmduscher feat. CouCou Chloe | Cleopatras | Too Cold To Hold | Strap Originals | 2024 | From whenthehornblows: "Six-piece punk connoisseurs in Warmduscher return with a dazzling collaboration with Coucou. //// Chloe Since their formation in 2014, Warmduscher has been an incessant force in the world of modern punk music, having released four full-length studio albums which include collaborations with greats such as Iggy Pop and Kool Keith. //// Recently announcing their fifth record Too Cold To Hold, the London-based group has a flurry of guest appearances on this upcoming project, which will include the likes of Lianne La Havas, Irvine Welsh, Jeshi and Confidence Man’s Janet Planet. This time they team up with Coucou Chloe, the French producer and singer who is a pioneer in experimental electronic music, creating a multi-layered and continually groovy sound in “Cleopatras”. The lyrics refer to creative process and attempting to create something real and original in a world that is constantly draining you, a theme reflected in the incredible animated music video which was released with the track, where energy vampires feed off people’s energy. //// Speaking on the story depicted in the animation, director Penelope Whitehouse said: “In our story energy vampires are real creatures that feed on starlight in space, but having drained every star they fall to earth and feed off people’s energy instead - namely the people who visit a local dive bar, Cleopatra’s, at night in the middle of the woods. When a struggling musician arrives at the bar, the vampires are determined to drain him completely”. Accompanied by an untiring drum section which follows the listener from start to finish, the added rhythmical frisk of cowbells is joined with a heavy-driven bass sound and distorted, spirited vocals in classic Warmduscher fashion. //// Speaking about this single and music video, frontman Clams Baker Jr. says: “Beneath the surface of Willesden Junction, energy-siphoning aliens convene at Cleopatra’s. Here, they conduct social experiments on the heart of the city, manipulating its inhabitants and feeding off their vitality, all in pursuit of stardom”. On the identity of the group amidst their fifth studio album, he adds: “My interpretation of who we are is pretty simple. A group of talented musicians and entertainers that have dedicated our lives to music and making a living doing what we love. We can’t do anything else really so here we are. What other people think of us is up to them”. //// ‘Too Cold To Hold’ will be out on November 15th through Strap Originals as the group go on tour later this month throughout the U.K and Europe with support from KEG, Hot Wax, Wu- Lu, Jeannie & the Whiteboys, Sworn Virgins and Friends in what is one of the most stacked support line-ups this year. ////Words by Jay Cohen" Vid.: Warmduscher - "Cleopatras" feat COUCOU CHLOE (Official Video) | * | 0:32:15 (MP3 | Pop-up) |

J.R.C.G. | Dogear | Grim Iconic... (Sadistic Mantra) | Sup Pop Records | 2024 | "o experience Justin R. Cruz Gallego’s pulverizing Sub Pop debut is to get burned down to ashes and burst forth, born anew. Grim Iconic...(Sadistic Mantra), the Tacoma-based artist’s second album, is driven by opposing forces: noisy abstractions and tightly structured beats, anguish and dissolution at the outside world and empowerment within, apathy and catharsis. Grim Iconic...(Sadistic Mantra) weds scouring electronics to hooky songs and Gallego’s powerful drumming in a way that feels visceral and new. It’s his most personal statement to date, at once playful and intent, driven and combustible, total fucking chaos mixed into glints of broken-glass beauty. //// Born in Tucson, Arizona, Gallego experienced culture shock as a child after relocating to the frigid climes of the Pacific Northwest. He found solace in the Seattle punk scene centered around Iron Lung Records and has since remained a fixture in the underground community. //// “I see this record as first and foremost a musical statement,” Gallego says. “I grew up in punk and DIY subcultures, but before that I had Latin music playing in the background through my childhood and every phase of adolescence. It was surprisingly natural to incorporate. I realized I wanted to go deeper into these rhythms. I wanted to make a record that felt as experimental as much as it felt from the perspective of a Latino. When I got a glimmer of that possibility, it felt exciting.” //// ...“Dogear” is a face-melting party starter that sounds like someone forced Talking Heads and Rudimentary Peni to share a practice space. “I wanted a song that felt playful in the way it attempted to be dissonant without taking itself too seriously,” Gallego says."... https://jrcg.bandcamp.com/ | * | 0:40:44 (MP3 | Pop-up) |

Today, the indie rock trio — who released their fifth studio album Poetry earlier this year — tackled the Doolittle gem “Mr. Grieves.” //// The song originally appeared in the Hulu show The Great. Dancer | Didn't Mean To | Dancer/Whisper Hiss Split | HHBTM Records | 2024 | Split is a split 12" featuring six songs each by both Dancer and Whisper Hiss. This split release came about by chance. The label pitched the idea of the bands recording a few extra tracks and doing a split 12" as a way of connecting the bands together and maybe have it to where the two bands could tour with each other in the USA and the UK. | * | 1:16:19 (MP3 | Pop-up) |

Gut Health | Scripture | Stiletto | AWAL Recordings | 2024 | Gut Health are a six-piece hypnotic dance-punk ensemble from Naarm / Melbourne. Stiletto is their debut album. From 'Amplify The Noise': "Gut Health‘s debut album Stiletto isn’t just another dance-punk record. It’s a captivating exploration of tension, uncertainty, and communal release. For fans who’ve followed the Naarm/Melbourne sextet since their EP Electric Party Chrome Girl, the album shows the band’s growth into something even more immersive and unpredictable. Across the ten tracks, Stiletto offers up a rollercoaster of sounds, groove-heavy rhythms, and sharp guitar interplay that makes it more than worth the listen. //////// What makes Stiletto stand out is its ability to create movement. Both literal and emotional. The six members of Gut Health come from varied musical backgrounds that range from jazz and folk to punk and R&B. Their diverse influence bleeds into the album, with tracks like “Cool Moderator” delivering bratty, groove-driven beats while “Separate States” builds an atmosphere thick with sonic tension. The back-and-forth between Eloise and Dom’s guitars keeps listeners on edge, as the duo’s improvisations create angular and often unexpected musical shifts. It’s a sound that resists easy classification and pushes beyond typical punk or dance formulas into something more dynamic. //////// The sense of unpredictability is intentional. Gut Health doesn’t want you to settle into the comfort of knowing what’s coming next. Each song plays with one’s expectations and keeps them engaged and curious. There’s a raw energy here that is driven by a shared love of creating, exploring, and pushing boundaries within their music. //////// The power of space and sound is a significant part of Stiletto’s allure and it comes from its inventive production. Recorded across various spaces from warehouses to rehearsal rooms to homes, the album makes use of its environment to create a sense of expansiveness. The APAX warehouse, in particular, provided a natural reverb that gives the tracks an almost eerie, open-air quality, letting the sound breathe. Producer Julian Cue and Portland-based engineer Evan Mersky utilised reel-to-reel tape machines to bring a warm and compressed feel to the record that adds an organic texture to the band’s already multi-layered approach. The result is an album that feels alive and fluid. Its sonic palette is filled with echoes and natural spaces that pull one deeper into its world. The shifting environments add to the sense of uncertainty Gut Health thrives on, inviting one to feel as if they’re part of something raw and unfinished, in the best way possible. //////// While filled with groovy bangers, Stiletto carries weighty themes. Addressing issues like the myths surrounding Australia, the empowerment of marginalised communities, and the significance of listening and sharing, Stiletto and Gut health do not shy away from social commentary, but both do so without being heavy-handed." https://guthealthband.bandcamp.com/ | * | 1:35:44 (MP3 | Pop-up) |
Chandra | Tish Le Dire | Transportation | Telephone Explosion | 198? / 2018 | Chandra will be with us live in person next week for our Hallowe'en show... We'll do a quick live-to-air catch up... + Toronto area folks... Her band will be playing Sonic Boom on Nov 2 in Toronto (5pm), and Hamilton on Nov 23. ---- From Pitchfork back in Jan 2019: "Perhaps familiar from being sampled by the Avalanches, this New York tween was an inspiring underground star in the early 1980s, a reputation confirmed by this archival collection. //////// When the Avalanches returned in 2016 after an absence of nearly two decades, a sampled koan lurked at the heart of “Subways,” their swooning comeback: “You walk on the subway/It moves around.” The voice belongs to Chandra Oppenheim, a veteran of the New York downtown scene who attended New York Dolls shows, rubbed elbows with Madonna, opened for Laurie Anderson, played the Mudd Club, staged performance art pieces at the Kitchen, and performed with her band on “Captain Kangaroo.” Not bad for a tween: Chandra was just 12 when she and her band of the same name cut “Subways” and three other songs for a now-coveted 1980 EP." //// That EP, an unreleased second one, and two four-track demos form this fidgety new reissue, a welcome resurrection since the band hasn’t gotten much notice in the decades of New York comps that have followed. After splintering from late 1970s punk band Model Citizens, Eugenie Diserio and Steve Alexander formed kinetic no wave group The Dance with future Material and Scritti Politti drummer Fred Maher. They also found themselves taken with the young Oppenheim, becoming her backing band and fostering her nascent songwriting. “Chandra would blow us away with her lyrics,” Alexander remembered in an interview with The Guardian. “We were always like, ‘Don’t change a thing.’” //////// The four songs Chandra actually released in 1980 recall fellow nervy New Yorkers ESG and Y Pants, plus the vim of the Slits and LiLiPUT. Oppenheim adds touches of organ and even post-punk melodica to the mix. After that first EP, Diserio and Alexander put together a band of peers to back-up Chandra, all closer to her own age. Despite that youthfulness, the resultant six songs are slightly less rambunctious, hewing closer to the polished synth-led sound of new wave. Jittery bass and guitar deliver bounce to “Get It Out of Your System,” while hand claps and more melodica add a post-punk edge to “Stranger,” which anticipates Le Tigre. During the spiky “Tish Le Dire,” Chandra rails against teachers and her elders before taking a dark turn at the song’s end: “What about suicide?/Don’t you think we tried?/It was a lie!”" | 1:40:59 (MP3 | Pop-up)
Young Knives | Dissolution | Landfill | Gadzook | 2024 | Released Oct 7 - "Long-running UK band Young Knives have announced their sixth album, Landfill, which will be out January 24 via Gadzook. The band produced it themselves and it was mixed by Mike Lindsay of Tuung. Frontman Henry Dartnall says “it’s a record is about letting things go before they are taken from you, including the carefully curated images of ourselves. Embracing everything the world throws at you and not taking it to heart.” //// Where 2020’s Barbarians was very, very out there, Landfill’s first single, “Dissolution,” is back on more familiar Young Knives sonic territory. Lyrically it was partially inspired by The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. “This song is kind of dumb. The words are about the dissolution of the ego or ego death; a thing that appears in eastern religions and was written about in Joseph Campbell’s A Hero’s Journey,” says Dartnall. “It’s the refocusing of your attention on the part of you that never becomes yesterday and can never become tomorrow, or something like that. It’s very similar to what people report from psychedelic experiences too. The problem is that writing and performing rock music is very much rooted in the world of the ego, so the idea of my big ego mouth shouting words about ego death is ridiculous. But then I thought that contradiction was kind of fun too.”" Young Knives: Dissolution (Official video) | * | 1:43:47 (MP3 | Pop-up) |

The record, which follows 2022’s Chloë and the Next 20th Century, was produced by Father John Misty and Drew Erickson." //// "Joshua Michael Tillman (born May 3, 1981), better known by his stage name Father John Misty, is an American musician. Maybe he had need to do some extreme burning like the Peel Newsnight thing?
FWIW his extreme gurning is very probably 'tardive dyskensia' which is a side effect of assorted medications (principally major tranquillisers & possibly epilepsy medications too). There's quite a lot of footage where it looks like his tongue is writhing within his closed mouth. But maybe he was just fiddling with his dentures?
But enough of Smiths gob d my thoughts ofbit, for there's a new/old fall live stuff to consider,

I saw a pic of Karl Burns & Bramah outside a studio now so it looks like he may be on the next House of All album & the oh brother podcast is slated for a return in November too apparently
