Obscure musical gems, avant experimentation, and classics worth rehearing. A conurbation of Leslie speakers, timbales, plungers, arch-tops, tablas, and squeaky reeds. Black ties, pork pies, Cuban boots, Nudie suits, bobbysocks, turtlenecks, and high-heeled sneakers. Jazz is the north star but it’s a wide universe, so says The Laughing Clock.

“Krieger says you can use pretty much anyone you want on the date.”
“Sigbjørn Krieger? Mr. BFD? You talked to him?”
“The famous Danish control freak himself. And it wasn’t a bad meeting.”
“I like the way his records sound. What does he mean anyone?”
“He suggested Jack DeJohnette on drums.”
“Uh-oh,” said the Bear, recoiling. “I’m afraid of that guy. You ever notice how he always sounds better than anyone he plays with? I can’t afford that at my stage of my,” he gave a plosive little laugh, “career.”

Yeah? If I were a psychoanalyst (which I'm not on Sundays), I might think that my substitution of après for avant expressed the unconscious wish that it were over with already, so I could get a good night's sleep. Instead, I'll pull my blue and orange cap on, and grit it out with the team.

To me that's what makes fandom beautiful: the heartbreak. (I'm speaking as a Mariners fan who mourns the departure of the SuperSonics.)

Not for nothing that it's the WINNING team where fans riot. What does your Monday-morning psychoanalyst say about that?

Hank Steamer just recently had a profile of JDJ in the New York Times (!) and I think it was there that JDJ was quoted as saying (about his piano playing) "I can create a mood." I think that's right, I don't know that he has amazing touch. I do like his solo on "Ahmad the Terrible" above... but he takes on Coltrane's "Countdown" on "The Piano Album" which was really ballsy

This show stands the test of time and is still good, days later. I thought I knew my DeJohnette, but I found out about a lot of music that I didn't know about. There were so many great ECM albums back in the day that I couldn't really keep up with all of his product coming out there. Thanks, DJP!
