Favoriting October 1, 2024: The Wiggle Room w/ BC Sterrett: Halloween Country Music for 1 hour.
I used to love challenges to make Halloween comps in a specific genre. In 2012, I chose country music. Not only did this turn out to be one of my favorite comps, but I really loved creating the cover art. What I find most interesting is that each genre will have different aspects of horror that they'll focus on. The the leading key elements for country horror is: 1. SATAN - This may stem from the good church going Christian origins of much early country music. Next to Heavy Metal, Country has to be the next leading genre to create countless tunes about the horned one with a pitchfork. 2. HELL - The result of poor choices, infidelity and the wages of sin. 3. DEATH - Sometimes accidental 4. MURDER - Usually due to cheating relations 5. INSANITY - A knee jerk response to a cheating spouse, or a serial killer who can't give it up. 6. ACCIDENTS AND WRECKS - often due to alcohol 7. GRAVEYARDS and the GRAVE 8. GHOSTS These songs are DARK DARK. I may not be able to play the entire comp, but will fill in as much as I can within the hour. Man, if only country music still sounded more like this, I'd be a life long fan. I just had surgery this morning and I'm still dizzy. If it's alright, I'm just going to post the entire setlist at once and we'll see how far we get till the hour is up :)

I remember, growing up largely in the 80's, thinking that I didn't really like Country Music. What I realized as an older person is that I really didn't like 80's Country music, which is what I mostly heard on the radio in those days.

Ghost Riders In The Sky is pretty excellent. I remember trying to wrap my head around it, as a young person, trying to understand what it could actually be about. I was so literal as a kid, I really wanted to know where these Ghost Riders came from.

I just have lots of "Halloween Music" folders. Never assembled any comps. I mostly save them for Halloween radio; I've done something every year since 2004, and started collecting tunes a couple years before that.
