I love those, along with creosote. Growing up, my elementary school had two main entrances, and the entrance that was closest to my house had massive wooden stairs going down a hill to the asphalt outdoor playground ?marked for basketball and hopscotch" area, which led to the cafeteria -- you'd walk through the cafeteria outside doors to the lobby. Anyway, I remember the smell of dry railroad ties, tar, creosote, and that fresh laid blacktop smell very fondly. On the street that we lived, they also maintained the roads very well, and I remember the way that the new asphalt sparkled in the sun for a day or so after it was laid....like little diamonds.

I actually know something RE privacy notices. Unfortunately notification laws are NOT Federal, so every State has their own requirements. California, which has the most stringent requirements, still gives companies a grossly long time. The case I was on before this was a data breach case and unfortunately, even when the offending companies are irrefutabley, completely, and demonstrably in a court of law as guilty as fuck of negligence, you still have to go to trial. It's still a CIVIL and not a criminal matter because USA -- the "criminals" are the hackers who never get caught, and all the company has to do is EVENTUALLY write checks IF they get proven guilty in court. In our case, we were able to find SO much dirt on the offending company that they wound up settling out of court. But still, our clients in the plaintiff class had to wait forever to get their credit/money/bank accounts in order. As in people got foreclosed on, etc.

And for folx wondering: I also never sign up for the third party free credit services. I just give Equifax their $20-something a month for their better tier services, have all of my credit locked, and have text notices for ANY transactions from my bank set up. I also have Norton Security -- not Lifelock, which is bullshit, but their secondary source monitoring service. A lot of these bad actor companies, in CYA mode, outsource the credit repair to third party companies that I've never heard of which -- you guessed it -- are run out of the same shitty overseas box farms that get hacked in the first place. I try to have my info in as few places as possible. If you can afford a proper Equifax+ sub, I highly recommended it. Nyack Hospital fucked up my Mom's records and when I started seeing hinky stuff in her email I signed up.

Another "Pro Tip" when buying crap online is to never save one's credit card number on their website. Although it can be convenient, it's just another place from where the number can be stolen.

I try not to do that; or if I do, it's my visa that goes only to my checking account, where I never keep a lot of money, and more than have in there can't be withdrawn

Yup, LastPass got fucking hacked. NEVER use a password storage service. Ironically enough, after being told "never write down passwords" -- if you WFH, having a random notebook somewhere in your dwelling written in your own chicken scratch is probably the safest way to store passwords. Frankly everyone I know who has ever worked on a data breach case does this.
