re: rat sympathy.... one summer morning i walked into my kitchen to feed my cats and in the middle of the floor was a writhing pink thing a couple of inches long, my cat gently nudged it with it's paw looked up and meowed...wtf? i thought it was a baby rat, i put it in a shoebox with a cut up t shirt and fed it and kept it alive and well. i was working freelance and a job came up, it did not bode well for the rat...it wasn't being fed every couple of hours and it died... in retrospect it was probably a baby squirrel...
