I grew up with that ugly phrase, too. Now it occurs to me to wonder how much of that was projection ('it's not me, it's you'), and how much the incommensurate world views of one group of people who were all about private property, and another for whom that was literally a foreign concept.

and although i considered that the term was invented with the same spirit with which george bush threw around the word "freedom", or "patriotic" -as a deliberate attempt to turn reality upside-down (Like the ministry of love in "1984")
this article's explanation seems more feasible.
