Gut Health | Cool Moderator | Stiletto | Highly Contagious / Gut Health Band | 2024 | "Gut Health welcome you into their unique world with "Cool Moderator" //// 26 July 2024, 16:00 | Written by Joe Beer //// The dance-punk sextet are back with "Cool Moderator", a slinky, groove-forward tune ushering in news of their debut album. //// Hailing from Naarm/Melbourne, six-piece band Gut Health are known for their intoxicating dance-punk anthems that are unlike anything you’ve heard before, and with the release of their new single “Cool Moderator” they stay true to their weird and wonderful ethos. //// The fast-paced, funk-fuelled track shimmers with kaleidoscopic instrumentation, dance-worthy beats and quirky embellishments to deliver something that will suck you into their whimsical world. Raw, clashing guitars collide over Athina Uh oh’s falsetto vocals, creating a striking juxtaposition that will replay in your mind all day long. //// The release of “Cool Moderator” is combined with the announcement of their highly anticipated debut album Stiletto. The ten-track release is slated to be a thought-provoking reflection on life, with the band sharing, “Uncertainty plays a lot through the album, we don’t want the listener to know exactly what is going to come next in the album to create excitement, intrigue and unease when faced with a present unknown...” //// ---- //// + from 'Resident': "Gut Health are a six-piece hypnotic dance-punk ensemble from Naarm / Melbourne. //// Stiletto is their debut album. Recorded in 2023 with long-term collaborator Julian Cue (CIVIC, Screensaver) and Gut Health’s Dom Willmott at Button Pusher Studios and APAX Warehouse in Preston, produced by Dom Willmott and bandmate Adam Markmann, mixed by Portland’s Evan Mersky (Lithics) on a 24-track reel-to-reel tape machine, and featuring additional contributions from saxophonist Yang Chen, Gut Health’s debut offering is an immersive ten-track foray into dancefloor-inducing soundscapes and punchy prowess, with songs oscillating between infectious up-tempo numbers, hypnotic bliss and chaotic noise edging precariously toward collapse. Gut Health’s expression of the healing qualities of consensual rage and their unadulterated demonstration of sonic shapeshifting, lingering tension and auditory ambition gives Stiletto its magnetic edge. Tracks flicker between atonality and melodicism, while unpredictably snaking and expanding into engulfing, kaleidoscopic soundscapes, reinforced by a grooveheavy rhythm section that champions the diverse musical backgrounds of each player – spanning punk to jazz to sound design and beyond." | * | 0:04:08 (Pop-up) |
Fat Dog | Wither | Woof | Domino Recording Co. Ltd. | 2024 | This song was made available on July 15, in advance of the forthcoming September full-length debut... "Fat Dog have released a brand-new single called ‘Wither’ – you can listen to it below. //// The song will appear on the London outfit’s debut studio album ‘Woof’, which is due for release on September 6 via Domino (pre-order/pre-save here). //// Per a press release, the dark, brutal track “captures the intoxicating energy of the band’s live show”. Frontman Joe Love barks in the crescendo: “You better wither baby before you die/ The whole team withers/ The whole team dies.” //// ‘Wither’ is accompanied by a ’90s video game-inspired music video, directed by Ryan Vautier. It references Chris Hughes (keys/synth) and Morgan Wallace’s (sax/keys) on-stage dance to ‘Wither’. //// The gameplay-esque visuals also see Fat Dog’s members enter different worlds, and come across bone dealers and singing skulls before joining forces to fight the final boss, Gerald...: Fat Dog - Wither (Official Video) | * | 0:06:28 (Pop-up) |
Brijean | Bang Bang Boom | Macro | Ghostly International | 2024 | Released July 12. "Since their debut as Brijean, the project of percussionist/singer-songwriter Brijean Murphy (the percussive heartbeat for live bands like Mitski, Poolside, and Toro y Moi) and multi-instrumentalist/producer Doug Stuart has moved with ingenuity, fusing psych-pop abstraction with dancefloor sensibilities. Through the body and mind, rhythm and lyricism, they make sense of the worlds around and within; 2021's Feelings celebrated self-reflection; 2022's Angelo processed loss, coinciding with the duo's first headlining tour, which doubled down on the material's desire to move. Now, across the playful expanse of Macro, arriving in 2024 on Ghostly International, Brijean engages different sides of themselves, the paradox of being alive. They've leveled up to meet the complexities and harmonies of the human experience with their most dynamic songwriting yet. Colorful, collaborative, sophisticated, and deeply fun, the album animates a macrocosm with characters, moods, and points of view rooted in the notion that no feeling is final and the only way out is through." https://brijean.bandcamp.com/ | * | 0:10:40 (Pop-up) |
The Petty Tyrants | Our Swimmer | Whore - Various Artists Play Wire | WMO | 1996 | The Petty Tyrants was comprised of [Canadian] Kevin Ogilvie (aka Nivek Ogre... ohGr, Pigface, Revolting Cocks, Skinny Puppy), Mark Walk (ohGr, Pigface, Ruby, Skinny Puppy) , William Rieflin (Ministry & related projects, KMFDM, The Angels of Light, etc.). Though no strangers to each other, they formed under this moniker ostensibly for this one project and no others. A satisfying & snappy cover of Wire's 1980 single, complete with additional cheeky refs. to Roxy Music's "Re-Make/Re-Model". | 0:14:25 (Pop-up)
The Fall | Athlete Cured (Peel Session Version) | The Complete Peel Sessions 1978-2004 | From The Fall's 11th Peel session. Recorded 28th April, first broadcast 19th May 1987. For fans of Spinal Tap. The full story: "This song notoriously cops the riff from Spinal Tap's "Tonight I'm Gonna Rock You Tonight." The lyrics have the feel of a late 19th or early 20th century detective narrative. Steve Hanley's below account of the fraught recording of the track is from The Big Midweek: ‘You can’t use that!’ insists Simon Rogers. ‘It’s a clear lift.’ ‘I don’t care, we’re using it!’ says Mark and we’ve got a stand-off I can’t help feeling slightly guilty about. ‘It’s a total rip-off!’ Simon’s wide-eyed with outrage. One of the things he’s always loved about our music is how original it is, and now here’s Mark insisting we use the riff, note-for-note, exactly the same, not altered in the slightest by key changes, time changes, chord changes or any other sort of disguise from ‘Tonight I’m Gonna Rock You Tonight’. A symptom of constant touring, this spoof anthem of modern rock has been ingraining itself into my internal sound system ever since we got the video player. Which is why, during a recent soundcheck, I happened to be doodling it just as Mark walked in. ‘We’ll use that,’ he decided. ‘Are you sure?’ I asked pointedly, thinking that, since Mark had seen the gospel according to Spinal Tap at least half as often as the rest of us, there was no need to spell out what it actually was. ‘You can’t just call it somfin else and sing about a sick German aflete and pretend it’s a new song and expect me to cover it ap [sic] with some bloody cymbal-rattling! I’ll neva live it dahn.’ I wonder if Mark’s got a private bet on with some of his alter egos as to which of them can piss the next producer off first. ‘What the fuck are you talking about?’ he retorts. ‘I’m trying to show that if you locked these fuckers in a studio and told them they weren’t getting fed till they’d copied a song, they’d starve to death!’ Simon shakes his head in disbelief, struggling to interpret this back-handed compliment for what it is."" --- Also, Brix E Smith adds in the sleevenotes to the Beggars Banquet 2xCD/LP 2020 edition of The Frenz Experiment: "Part of Athlete Cured was influenced by the fact that athletics was on 24/7. I was always extremely obsessed with World Championship Athletics and Olympic Athletics. I am the kind of person who will watch the Olympics from sun up to sun down. Mark was forced to have the fucking tv on watching the athletics because I found it inspiring. I would read biographies, everything. There was the whole thing when the horrible thing happened; when the Israelis got killed. There is part of Munich 72 in there too." | 0:18:03 (Pop-up)
Mouse On Mars | Bilk A3 | Bilk | Sonig | 2023 | "In spring 1994 Mouse on Mars contributed an exclusive piece to Sähkö Recordings’ ambient radio project, a one-week public radio program that was aired citywide in Helsinki, Finland. Andi Toma and Jan St. Werner recorded sounds in and around their studio in Düsseldorf Bilk to construct one continuous composition that spanned the course of one neighborhood walk. Midi-controlled synths, samplers, analogue effects, tape delays, effect pedals, guitars and a jew’s harp were juxtaposed with recordings captured during the walk. An additional microphone that pointed out of the studio window was occasionally dubbed into the mix. The resulting collage was broadcast just a few months before the group’s debut album Vulvaland came out and never aired again. 30 years into the band’s existence Andi Toma and Jan St. Werner revise the duo’s history by producing three LPs that would place the band’s discography under a slightly different light. Bilk marks the beginning of that investigation: a free-flowing assemblage of everything that vibrates and can be caught on tape. A 30 year old recording with subtle new edits and additions." DVTR | Les Olympiques | Les Olympics Single | Lisbon Lux Records | 2024 | Monreal band (and Northern Transmissions favourites) DVTR are back with new single “Les Olympiques” along with its cheeky new video featuring Jean Divorce as a RCMP officer and Demi Lune as Miss Canada. I don’t care about the Olympics (Je me fiche des Olympiques!)! Fresh off a recent first tour in Europe, DVTR draws inspiration from millions of French people who are absolutely bored in the name of the grand sports celebration, in a country in total disarray. The result? A banger the likes of which DVTR have never made before, with a chorus and energy far too catchy for a punk band: the perfect theme to listen to while trashing Paris at the opening of the Olympics in July? Somewhere between the B-52s and fast DIY punk à la Jay Reatard, Demi Lune & Jean Divorce’s troublemaking duo pours out its bile on often surprising, sometimes awkward, and always salvatory soundscapes. Its unpredictable stage antics break all language barriers, from Mexico to Europe. We dare you not to listen to yhis song five times in a row. | * | 0:30:52 (Pop-up) |
Dead Kennedys | Jock-O-Rama | Frankenchrist | Decay Music | 1985 | Frankenchrist is the third album by the American hardcore punk band Dead Kennedys, released in 1985 on Alternative Tentacles. The album is an example of the progressive, psychedelic side of Dead Kennedys' musical personality. rankenchrist is when Dead Kennedys fully arrived—as songwriters, conceptualists and provocateurs. It’s a concept album about life in the Reagan era and the rise of the Christian right and corporate monoculture by a band at the height of its powers. Biafra’s biting satire, storytelling and fierce quips are at their best on “Stars and Stripes of Corruption” and “Goons of Hazzard,” and guitarist East Bay Ray offers some of the most haunting guitar tones and leads of a brilliant career. Frankenchrist is also a complete statement befitting a band that had been together almost seven years. Dead Kennedys created a unified dystopian hellscape of conformity, mob violence, and depersonalization via technology that is as memorable and sharply detailed as the world of Ray Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451 or Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale. | 0:33:10 (Pop-up)
METZ | The Swimmer | II | Royal Mountain Records | 2015 | II is the second studio album by Canadian noise rock band METZ, released internationally on May 4, 2015, on Sub Pop. Throughout II, just about anything is prone to set Edkins off: crass commercialism, self-loathing, painkillers and—horror of horror—waiting in lines. These are angry-sounding songs, no question there....In interviews, Metz claim to be a punk band largely because it's the one genre the three of them could agree on. | 0:37:17 (Pop-up)

The Contortions | Contort Yourself | Buy | ZE Records | 1979 | This one goes out the great Simone Biles! Chance differed from some of his No Wave compatriots by possessing (and demanding from his band) a certain level of musical skill and talent. His music is frequently described as combining the freeform playing of Ornette Coleman with the solid funk rhythm of James Brown, though filtered through a punk rock lens. Simon Reynolds, author of Rip It Up and Start Again : Postpunk 1978-1984, wrote: And although "affection" is possibly an odd word to use in reference to a bunch of nihilists, I do feel fond of the No Wave people. James Chance's music actually stands up really well, I think. | 0:41:00 (Pop-up)
Knob Noster Band | Butthole Flag On Parade | Horrendous New Wave Comp | Lumpy Records | 2017 | Released on Fish records, a sub label of Lumpy that is run by Martin Meyer of Lumpy and the Dumpers and BB Eye, the comp presents tracks from the likes of Ausmuteants' Jake Robertson, Cody Phifer of HairLong n Freeky and Nosferatu, and Rik of Rik and the Pigs and Mongoloid fame. To be honest I'm not sure if these acts even exist outside of their appearance on the comp and an air of mystery surrounds who plays what. But the anonymity/lack of information only adds to the intrigue to an act like Knob Noster Band's track "Butthole Flag On Parade." Knob Noster is a city in Johnson County, Missouri, United States. The population was 2,782 at the 2020 census. It is located adjacent to and closely associated with Whiteman Air Force Base. Knob Noster State Park is nearby. They play football at the local high school and have a marching band. I am not sure if this has anything to do with anything...I do love the idea that somewhere in this town of 2000 people, some nerd is hidden away making this insane music. | 0:45:16 (Pop-up)
Viagra Boys | Sports (Shrimp Sessions) | Shrimp Sessions 1 (Live) | Shrimptech | 2021 | "Sports" is the debut single by Swedish rock band Viagra Boys, released on 5 July 2018 as the first single from their debut studio album Street Worms (2018). The song is a perfect indictment of the sort of sweaty, brittle masculinity that tends toward overcompensation. What do you do when your identity is on the fritz—when the real, abject experience of being human catches up to you despite your attempts to dude it away? Smoke a joint, eat some meat, scream the name of every single sport you can think of. | 0:47:28 (Pop-up)

The band was closely associated with The Ex. A mix of energetic post punk, African music, No Wave, Free Jazz and improvisation. They grew out the scene of angular noisy guitar bands in the UK. They disbanded in 1995, with members moving on to projects including Rhythm Activism, The Ex, Kletka Red, Two Pin Din." //// Lyrics: "The man ran / As things were getting bad / He ran to a wall / The wall was the law / The law hit like a block / The law hit like a block / The man could not stop / Draw the curtains please / There's one citizen less / Draw the curtains please / Neatly, neatly / Draw the curtains please / There's one citizen less / Draw the curtains please / Neatly, neatly / We must keep it neat" | 1:01:56 (Pop-up)
The Ex | Olympigs (Live) | Too Many Cowboys | Mordam Records / Ex Records / Theodorus Johannes Hessels | 1987 | Excerpts from the liner notes: "NOLYMPICS" - ""The Olympic Games - a political and commercial racket", Since its modern inception in 1896 with different types of sport, the Olympic Games have changed drastically. Initially it had a relatively small scope. The Olympic idea was strengthened by its amateur status and the "participation before winning" ideal. With every Olympic Games that came to pass, the original idea faded into obscurity. The 1928 Games in Amsterdam produced the first signs of protest. Publicly rejecting the organization of the Games on the ground that sport was used to serve chauvinism and nationalism, the communist David Wijnkoop pointed out that the material profits of the Games went only to certain groups in a society, while every citizen had to make a contribution. //// The Berlin games of 1936 is still the most extreme example of this political/ideological manipulation. Orchestrated by Hitler and his fellow fascists, the Games attempted to display nazi superiority." | 1:06:01 (Pop-up)
Chumbawamba | More Whitewashing | Pictures of Starving Children Sell Records | Agit-Prop | 1986 | "Chumbawamba (/ˌtʃʌmbəˈwɒmbə/) were a British anarcho-punk band who formed in 1982 and disbanded in 2012. They are best known for their 1997 single "Tubthumping", which was nominated for Best British Single at the 1998 Brit Awards. Other singles include "Amnesia", "Enough Is Enough" (with Credit to the Nation), "Timebomb", "Top of the World (Olé, Olé, Olé)", and "Add Me". Their anarcho-communist political leanings led them to have an irreverent attitude toward authority, and to espouse a variety of political and social causes including animal rights and pacifism (early in their career) and later regarding class struggle, Marxism, feminism, and anti-fascism. //// For most of their career, the band had a 7-8 piece lineup and drew from a wide range of musical styles, including punk rock, pop, and folk. While their first two albums were largely punk and pop-influenced, their third was an entirely a capella album of traditional songs. In 2004, several long-term members left the band, which continued with a 4-piece (later 5-piece) acoustic lineup, with more folk-influenced output. //// In July 2012, Chumbawamba announced they were splitting up after 30 years. The band was joined by former members and collaborators for three final shows between 31 October and 3 November 2012, one of which was filmed and released as a live DVD." //// "By the mid-1980s Chumbawamba had begun to release material using the vinyl format on their own Agit-Prop record label, which had evolved from an earlier project, Sky and Trees Records. " //// "The first LP, Pictures of Starving Children Sell Records (1986), was a critique of the Live Aid concert organised by Bob Geldof, which the band argued was primarily a cosmetic spectacle designed to draw attention away from the real political causes of world hunger." | 1:10:20 (Pop-up)
The Clash | Police On My Back | Sandanista! | Epic / Sire | 1980 | Apparently Joe Strummer would run marathons now and then during his Clash days. (Once, famously, drunkenly, during the time he "disappeared" in Paris just prior to the release of Combat Rock.) Likewise, it seems he was a fan of running (mainly from the police) in early Clash covers "I Fought The Law (And The Law Won)" [lyric: "I guess my race is run"] and this Eddie Grant / Equals cover, where he runs quite a bit, [though Mick Jones was taking the lead vocals here,] ie. running on each of the days of the week, apparently down railway tracks. //// ""Police on My Back" is a 1967 song originally released by The Equals from their second studio album Explosion. In 1980, the song was covered by The Clash. "Police on My Back" was written by Eddy Grant and recorded by his band The Equals for their second studio album Explosion in December 1967. / In 1980, the Clash recorded a cover version of the song for their album Sandinista!, and turned "the mid-paced soul-pop song into a charged-up, full-powered rocker". Their version featured guitarist Mick Jones on lead vocals. Their version of the song was only released in Australia, and was described as a "punk anthem at a time of political and social repression", and as their "most full-throated rock song since I Fought The Law."" | 1:14:03 (Pop-up)
Jon Langford | Drone Operator | Grubbins | Self-released (Bandcamp) | 2014 / 2023 | This song was released in a full band version on the 2014 Jon Langford & Skull Orchard album "Here Be Monsters". Though this version is stripped down in comparison, it is somehow more impactful, menacing, strange & ultimately harrowing. From a rarities / odds & ends compilation "Grubbins" from Oct. 2023. -- I had interviewed Jon Langford around the time he was writing this song, I remember him telling me about it, that he was just finishing writing it, and I was quite excited to hear it. I wonder how many other versions there are, I think he was considering doing it with The Sadies at the time. From the bandcamp page: "Jon Langford wants to share his Gubbins with the world - songs that fell between the cracks, tunes too exuberant and twisted to hang with the popular crowd, stuff he just forgot about and pleasantly surprised the old welsh bugger when he rediscovered them in the basement / released October 6, 2023" https://jonlangford.bandcamp.com/ | 1:17:20 (Pop-up)

"The phrase “bread and circuses” originates from ancient Rome, where it referred to a strategy of providing public relief (such as free wheat) and entertainment (such as gladiatorial games) to keep the populace content and prevent uprisings. In more recent times, the “Bread Not Circuses” coalition opposed Toronto’s bid for the 1996 Olympic Summer Games, arguing that the funds should be spent on other priorities like healthcare and education. The idea was that investing in the Olympics might divert resources away from essential services. Ultimately, Toronto did not win the bid. So, in this case, the focus on essential needs (bread) took precedence over extravagant events (circuses)." //// "Money well spent? However, let’s look at this more carefully. According to The Guardian, underestimating Olympic costs has almost become an Olympic sport in itself. The budget for the Winter Olympics held in Sochi in early 2014 was around US$10 billion, but the Games eventually cost around US$51 billion. This makes it the most expensive Olympics ever." //// "And what about the opportunity costs? Shouldn’t the State and federal governments be spending taxpayer money on domestic priorities, such as health and education, rather than on bidding for the Olympic Games? One of the strongest ground-roots anti-Olympic movements to date, the Bread not Circuses movement based in Toronto, successfully stopped a bid by Toronto to host the Olympic Games in 2008. They argued it was wrong to spend money bidding for the Olympic Games when there were public sector budget cuts and a shortage of housing. " //// "There is also a danger that publicly funded sporting infrastructure may become a “white elephant” - following the Olympics in Athens, many of the purpose-built venues now lie empty, unused and decaying" https://soundcloud.com/wally-brooker/bread-not-circuses |

The Olympics | Secret Agent | Mine Exclusively/Secret Agent 7" | Mirwood | 1966 | The Olympics are an American doo-wop group, formed in 1957 by lead singer Walter Ward (August 28, 1940 – December 11, 2006). The group also included Eddie Lewis (tenor, Ward's cousin), Charles Fizer (tenor), Walter Hammond (baritone), and Melvin King (bass). Over the course of a decade, the band released about 20 singles. They were also one of the first bands to record the song "Good Lovin" Fizer was shot and killed during the Watts riots in 1965. Shortly thereafter, King left the group after his sister died in an accidental shooting. A revamped group continued to record into the early 1970s but were unable to attain popular chart success after the mid-1960s. Of Montreal | Sink The Seine | Hissing Fauna, Are You The Destroyer? | Polyvinyl Records | 2007 | The worst thing about this song is that it's only a minute long. Kevin Barnes founded of Montreal, allegedly naming it for a failed romance with a woman from Montreal, Quebec. Barnes recorded most of the band's 2007 release, Hissing Fauna, Are You the Destroyer?, by themselves while living in Norway and Athens, Georgia. Hissing Fauna is essentially a loose concept album, revolving heavily around all the negative aspects (social and emotional) of relationships gone wrong. While there's always been a dark streak running through Of Montreal's cartoon universe-- and Barnes' chipmunk-shrill voice sometimes tips disturbingly from childlike to desperate-- few would look to the Athens, Geo., band to accurately depict love's gory aftermath. And yet, there it is.... | 1:41:57 (Pop-up)
Blonde Redhead | Equus | Misery Is A Butterfly | 4AD | 2004 | Blonde Redhead singer Kazu Makino is also an accomplished equestrian. This is how she met her true love, Harry. “Love at first sight,” she told the French publication Doré in 2015. “When he walked into the barn, I saw his hair, the way he swayed his body, the way he walked and everything, his eyes. Everything about him I was like, ‘I’m finished.’ I fell in love with him so hard.” Harry is an Irish sport horse. And, in 2002, he almost killed her. While out on a ride, her beloved beast got startled and reared his 1,000+ lb. body. He threw his petite owner to the ground, where he proceeded to crush her head with his mighty hoof. Stereogum reports, “half of her face was disfigured, the hoof slamming far enough in to make an impression on her brain, and she required a complete facial reconstruction.” At the time of the accident, the band had been working on what would become their sixth full-length album, Misery is a Butterfly. With Kazu in recovery, they were able to dig deeper into their work. Like Kazu, we have to get back up on that horse. And learn to find our voice again. | 1:43:01 (Pop-up)

It can be culturally insensitive at times, as it plays w/ national stereotypes (americans fat, jingoistic, prone to go to war easily, etc), but the authors come from most nations internationally, and are more likely to make fun of their own nations (canadian sterotypes are exaggerated as well, but then you get into more obsucre stereotypes of montenegrans, Paraguayians, etc). There is a lot of history lessons involved some of the time....

Amazing that you and Kat saw them. I only learned of the band via WFMU a few years ago. They put several of their releases on bandcamp. I scooped those up too.
