A combination of collage, new experimental records and other bits and bobs, Mid-Valley Mutations is a tour through the mind of Austin Rich, who has been broadcasting in some form since 1998. Heavily influenced by Dr Demento, Don Joyce and old fashioned College Radio, Austin creates Audio Essays on a variety of subjects, and even just plays records, from time to time. Sometimes Live music and Interviews will grace the program, helping create a situation where you don't really know what you're going to hear, when you tune in. What you need to know is when you enter the Mid-Valley region, be prepared for the Musical Mutations... in whatever form they take.

Like a lot of fests of this nature, there were two rooms, with two "set-ups." So while a few bands are setting up in one room, the other room can have performances. This is how they get 12 bands to play in four hours more or less seamlessly.

Sound reinforcement provided by Jim Whittemore, who played in the post-punk band The Scientific Americans, and later, in an electro project that he leads, "Luthor Maggot." Jim has led a wild life, but now lives in Corvallis, and runs sound for events like this, bringing in gear he's accumulated over the years.

Arvo Zylo:

Brown noise, also known as Brownian noise or red noise, is a type of low-frequency sound noise produced by the same process that causes Brownian motion. It is characterized by a heavy emphasis on low-frequency sounds, similar to the sounds of waterfalls, thunder, or heavy rain.

Key Characteristics:

Random walk behavior: Brown noise exhibits random fluctuations in sound pressure, similar to the random movements of particles in Brownian motion.
1/f^2 frequency spectrum: Brown noise has a power spectral density that decreases with frequency, following a 1/f^2 relationship.
Low-frequency dominance: Brown noise focuses on low-frequency sounds, typically below 200 Hz, which are perceived as deep and rumbling.
Unrelated to color: The term “brown” in brown noise does not refer to the color, but rather is named after Robert Brown, a Scottish botanist who discovered Brownian motion in 1827.

I wrote an article about sonic weaponry once. I believe they are real, they are not a secret in other countries.

I will never forget my experience during 9/11 where my friends and I all fell asleep at the same exact time after a loud and persistent, and clearly synthetic cicada-type noise...

I do not remember the inventor of the noise that caused people to have bowel problems, but I do remember the "Earthquake machine" that Tesla made. Some people tried to remake it, and it did cause some tremors, but nothing approximating an "earthquake".

I remember seeing it on the news, when they were trying to say it was a mass suicide where they set the building on fire themselves. Always trust the news!

As I understand it, Trigger Object will support Wolf Eyes on a few shows in the NW this Fall.

right - watching them shoot flame throwers in at point blank range, and saying "mass suicide"...
something doesn't compute here

I'm glad I played before Trigger Object. This would have been hard to follow.

I was looking at their bandcamp, seems like they have done vinyl and even sold out of copies, so apparently they tour, one can guess.

I saw Ratt for free in the 90s, no regrets. I figured out a way to drink underage, is what I remember.

My first two shows were:

Robert Palmer (Simply Irresistible Tour.)
Skid Row opening for Bon Jovi.

My favorite example of weaponized music is in Mars Attacks, when they explode the aliens' heads with cowboy yodels.

Which is how I know I'm not Martian: I love those Yodels!

But it's also how I TEST for Martians. Just to be safe.

My first show was supposed to be REEL BIG FISH, but someone stole my ticket. Then it was supposed to be Marilyn Manson, but my ride flaked. Then it was a big Ska fest called "Ska Against Racism". Although, I honestly don't remember what my first show was that wasn't "big". I started going to The Fireside Bowl for shows (with a backpack full of beer) when I was 16. First show I remember was Dystopia.

I was a pretty mainstream rock and roll kid for most of my youth. I blame Nirvana interviews for introducing me to the idea that there was music that wasn't mainstream, or wasn't on the radio. Even my mom's record store mostly stocked classic rock, so to even know there was other kinds of music out there was very exciting. But it didn't happen for me until I was in High School. And even then, finding it took years. You couldn't find it in my home town, no matter where you looked!

I was engrossed in MTV until I was about 16 and my friend took me to a show and played some stuff for me. I hadn't really been to a record store that wasn't in a mall before that.

I've been thinking about putting together a show of cuts from "classic rock" albums where they try to be experimental.

Certainly, there's an audience for everything, and I have nostalgia for dumb stuff, too. But Bon Jovi did not age as well for me.

Occasionally, parents know what's up. The pretend to be dumb sometimes when they say they don't know who John Cage is, but I've seen their search history.

They know.

My 1st show (with parents & grandparents) was The Oak Ridge Boys back in Elvira’s heyday!

The first show I purchased a ticket for was Black Sabbath - Born Again tour. Ian Gillian (Deep Purple) was the lead singer……this was right after Dio departed. Night Ranger (Dawn Patrol) opened. (40 years ago, I was 15)
