Wanna hear a sad tale? Today my family was to fly to Sweden, Copenhagen, and Poland. I had family in those places years back, wanted to check them out.
Passport was good until September, knew I'd need to renew it, but figured it could be after the trip (If something expires on a certain date, it is good before that date, no?)
Well, no, it turns out. European rules are the passport needs at least 3 months before expiration. So, my family left without me. I'm hoping an early morning vision to the NYC passport office (with tears in my eyes), will get me a passport quickly so I can join them with a Monday night flight.
(I do get to listen to more Drummer Stream, bright side...)

That's terrible, @doctorj! I've heard of such rules, but I don't really get them. Why are you any greater risk if you have two months left on your passport than if you have two years? Especially if you can show you've booked a return flight, etc. Good luck at the passport office.

Yup, the return flight was a good bit before the expiration date. But, there's no one you can talk to. Have to get up early Monday, get there immediately on opening, and hope they take pity (I know they CAN get one ready in as little as 4 hours; whether they are willing to bother to is another story).

On the positive side, I've just received email saying that I'm the "most viewed" anesthesiologist in Watertown, NY. Sorry, doc! You couldn't stay at the top forever. This honor is particularly noteworthy given that I am not an anesthesiologist (or MD) and have never been to Watertown. I hope everyone is not too envious of me.
