When I was in law school, I wanted to host comparative listening parties with my classmates. I was thinking two or three performances of a Schubert string quartet, for example. I hosted only one, and it wasn't comparative. We played Robert Ashley's opera Improvement. The attendees were pleased, dinner was decent, everybody had a good time. But I really wish I had had the wherewithal to do subsequent parties. Two different recordings of a Schubert (or Beethoven or you name it) work can be so revealing!
