A.R.E. Weapons | What the Fuck Do You Want? | Darker Blue | Defend Music | 2009 | A.R.E. Weapons is a band from New York City. Formed in 1999 by Matthew McAuley, Brain F. McPeck, and Ryan Noel, A.R.E. Weapons has been described as no wave/electro-rock. Their live shows are noted for their aggressiveness and confrontational style. Rough Trade was encouraged to sign the band after Pulp's Jarvis Cocker heard A.R.E. Weapons live. A.R.E. Weapons released two singles, "Street Gang" and "New York Muscle", in 2001. Before the release of their eponymous 2003 album, synthesizer player Thomas Bullock was replaced by their manager Paul Sevigny (brother of actress Chloë Sevigny). Guitarist Ryan Noel died in 2004 of a heroin overdose. The remaining members recorded their second album, Free in the Streets, which was released in 2005. | 0:00:00 (Pop-up)

Twisted Charm | Broken Girl | Real Fictional | Because Music | 2007 | twisted charm are one of the uk indie scene's most treasured groups, having been influential in many of their original fans starting hugely successful bands of their own (bloc party, klaxons, bono must die...), and their brand new single 'cinema' is an off-kilter brit-pop classic, their paean to inner-city escapism. what does this latest offering sound like? imagine gang of four's post-punk nihilism, devo's off-the-wall ingenuity, clor's agit-funk danceability permeated with a distinctly london ennui... and you're somewhere close...frontman nathan doom entreats over jerky guitars and spasmodic saxophone, knitted together with a titanic rhythm section. like last year's single 'boring lifestyles', it's a ruthless dissection of the modern condition, which, in their uniquely eccentric and concise manner, is set to cement their reputation as london's foremost art-pop biographers....and then....they broke up and disappeared. :-( | 0:09:32 (Pop-up)
schedars | In the Morning I Eat Rotten Meat | schedars | Sidecar | 2023 | Formed in Tokyo in 2021 by guitarist Enrique Enrique, who is also known as the guitarist of the isolated Emily likes tennis ("cardboard hardcore" according to SPOILMAN Kashima), plays the guitar in schedars, which is introduced as "post-punk" in many places, but is actually a band with a post-punk skin... Something crossover... Something crossover... something else that is hard to describe...? It's hard to describe. In terms of visuals and sound, the front female vocalist and saxophonist are floral, and the music inherits the sound of the 70's and 80's New Wave/Post Punk and No Wave context, but the drum and bass playing is too good at a strange level, and the sound and groove that no one in the punk roots could produce is too good. The drum and bass playing is too good, and the sound and groove is too much.... A fusion of DNA-like impulses. | 0:11:32 (Pop-up)

Yuvees | Ode to the Non-Person | Human Dance | Self Released | 2020 | After fashioning a live-in vehicle from an 18-passenger van, Brendon and Jacob Broome, two brothers living in Dayton, Ohio, hit the road. Their plan was to travel, working odd jobs and playing music. “We traveled until we landed somewhere, and Oregon was the spot,” Brendon Broome tells me over the phone. After arriving, the siblings worked at a marijuana farm near Cottage Grove. In their spare time, they hung out in Eugene playing music as Yuvees, a trio heavily influenced by no-wave music from New York and post-punk bands from Ohio such as Pere Ubu and DEVO. In addition to punk, Ohio’s rust belt legacy influenced Broome. In the mechanized yet oddly danceable grooves — but also his trash-mouth poetry — you hear a sound fitting nicely alongside other Portland bands like The Woolen Men, Lithics and even early Modest Mouse. Broome’s abrasive and exhilarating slide guitar style is also a reminder of Ohio’s faded industrial past, a technique borrowed from ’70s New York musician James Chance. “We grew up in an industrial town,” Broome says. “The sound of glass breaking or metal being ripped or cut, that’s kind of like ASMR for weirdos.” | 0:16:19 (Pop-up)

Delivery | Digging The Hole | Digging The Hole | Heavenly Recordings | 2024 | Released July 11. "The Music Network [announced that] Melbourne five-piece Delivery, whose sound traverses new wave, garage and punk rock, and almost everything in between, have joined the Heavenly Recordings roster. The band should feel confident about their decision, with Confidence Man, Hatchie, King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard, and Midlife being previous Australian acts to have found a suitable home at the label. //// For Delivery, [the] news is also confirmation of another thing: that sometimes the right recipe of bandmates, work ethic, and shared vision and style is out there waiting. //// Typical of the Melbourne music scene, the band features members recruited from some of the city’s finest DIY bands, including Kosmetika, Blonde Revolver, and The Vacant Smiles. //// To celebrate their signing to Heavenly Recordings, Delivery have shared their first single for the label, “Digging the Hole”, which doubles as the first taste of the band’s forthcoming second album. //// “‘Digging the Hole’ was the first track thrown in the mix for our upcoming album and it definitely set the tone of things to come,” the band say of the song, which recalls the exuberant, no-nonsense rock of Parquet Courts and The Hives. //// “It was written in a rush, combining a bunch of unused ideas, with vocals and guitar leads completely ad-libbed on the spot as it was demoed. The final song ended up with more twists and turns than a Sherlock episode, but at the same time seemed to make perfect sense to me.” //// As for the lyrics, “Digging the Hole” they note that “there are some people who take on the grunt work and there are some people who don’t mind shoveling the dirt back in and undoing all the effort. ‘Digging the Hole’ is a reminder to be the person who keeps digging that hole, even when someone is filling it right back in again.” //// Before their second album arrives, Delivery have lots of tour dates lined up, including single launch shows in Melbourne and Sydney in August and September." | * | 0:27:40 (Pop-up) |
Silverbacks | Selling Shovels | Selling Shovels | Central Tones | 2024 | Released July 9. From their BC: "Silverbacks return with new single ‘Selling Shovels’, recorded with Gilla Band’s Daniel Fox. It’s their first release since 2022 sophomore effort Archive Material. //// Scrappy guitar harmonics usher in a rolling slice of wonky guitar pop, atop which vocalist Daniel O’Kelly’s delivers a staccato admission to a natural impatience / morbid curiosity. //// As he explains: "The idea for these lyrics came from a habit I have - maybe everyone does it? When reading a historical figure’s wikipedia page I often lose interest and so I jump straight to the ‘personal life’ and ‘death’ part of the page to see how they died and the circumstances they were in at the time. The lyrics flicker between mundane distractions and fairly horrific images of war. Selling Shovels is a reference to ‘selling shovels during the gold rush’." //// This desire to head straight to the meaty bits echoes Silverbacks’ lean approach to slacker indebted art-rock; a startling dexterity allows the sextet to traverse styles without wasting a note. //// Updating the 90s/00s sound of Pavement, Guided By Voices, Yo La Tengo and Yeah Yeah Yeahs and instilling it with a very particular brand of 2020’s angst, Silverbacks punctuate tongue-in-cheek moments and surreal lyrics with sudden lucid points."" https://silverbacks.bandcamp.com/ | * | 0:31:06 (Pop-up) |
Coldcut feat. Mark E Smith | (I'm) In Deep | What's That Noise? | Ahead Of Our Time – CCUT CD1 | 1989 | Mark E. Smith/Coldcut collab. from 1989, on Coldcut's self-released "What's That Noise?" album. Precedes the Fall's 1990 Coldcut collaboration "Telephone Thing" (inspired by "My Telephone", the Coldcut/Lisa Stansfield collab. that followed "I'm In Deep" on the "What's That Noise?" album.) "Coldcut are an English electronic music duo composed of Matt Black and Jonathan More. Credited as pioneers for pop sampling in the 1980s, Coldcut are also considered the first stars of UK electronic dance music due to their innovative style, which featured cut-up samples of hip-hop, soul, funk, spoken word and various other types of music, as well as video and multimedia. According to Spin, "in '87 Coldcut pioneered the British fad for 'DJ records'". //// Coldcut's records first introduced the public to pop artists Yazz and Lisa Stansfield, through which these artists achieved pop chart success. In addition, Coldcut has remixed and created productions on tracks by the likes of Eric B & Rakim, James Brown, Queen Latifah, Eurythmics, INXS, Steve Reich, Blondie, the Fall, Pierre Henry, Nina Simone, Fog, Red Snapper, and BBC Radiophonic Workshop. //// Beyond their work as a production duo, Coldcut are the founders of Ninja Tune, an independent record label in London, England (with satellite offices in Los Angeles and Berlin) with an overall emphasis on encouraging interactive technology and finding innovative uses of software. The label's first releases (the first four volumes of DJ Food - Jazz Brakes) were produced by Coldcut in the early '90s, and composed of instrumental hip-hop cuts that led the duo to help pioneer the trip hop genre, with artists such as Funki Porcini, the Herbaliser and DJ Vadim." | 0:35:33 (Pop-up)
Coldcut | My Telephone (featuring Lisa Stansfield) | What's That Noise? | Ahead Of Our Time – CCUT CD1 | 1989 | 'What's That Noise?' is the debut album by Coldcut, released in 1989... Guests on the album include: Lisa Stansfield on "People Hold On" and "My Telephone", Mark E. Smith (the Fall) on "(I'm) In Deep", Junior Reid on "Stop This Crazy Thing", Queen Latifah on "Smoke 1" and Yazz on "Doctorin' the House". //// "Lisa Jane Stansfield (born 11 April 1966) is an English singer, songwriter, and actress. Her career began in 1980 when she won the singing competition Search for a Star. After appearances in various television shows and releasing her first singles, Stansfield, along with Ian Devaney and Andy Morris, formed Blue Zone in 1983. The band released several singles and one album, but after the success of Coldcut's "People Hold On" in 1989, on which Stansfield was featured, the focus was placed on her solo career. //// Stansfield's first solo album Affection (1989) and its worldwide chart-topping lead single "All Around the World" were major breakthroughs in her career. She was nominated for two Grammy Awards, and Affection is her best-selling album to date. In the following years, Stansfield released Real Love (1991), So Natural (1993), and Lisa Stansfield (1997). In 1999 she appeared in her first film, Swing, and also recorded the soundtrack for it. Her next albums included Face Up (2001), Biography: The Greatest Hits (2003), and The Moment (2004). Thereafter, Stansfield took a break from music and focused on her film career. In 2008, she starred in The Edge of Love and in 2014 she appeared in Northern Soul. //// Stansfield released her seventh album Seven on 31 January 2014. Its lead single "Can't Dance" was digitally released on 16 October 2013. She promoted the album with the European Seven Tour in 2013 and 2014. Her most recent album Deeper was released on 6 April 2018. In June 2018, following a string of sold-out tour dates in Europe, Stansfield announced her North American Tour, which began in October 2018." | 0:40:52 (Pop-up)
The Fall | Telephone Thing (Extended Mix) | Extricate (Expanded Edition) | Mercury Records | 1990 / 2007 | Post-marriage, therefore post-Brix E Smith; Mark E Smith & his band The Fall were newly signed to a major label & suprisingly re-united with cofounder Martin Bramah. This single was the first glimpse into the next era of The Fall. Despite Mark E. Smith's collaboration with Coldcut a year earlier, it is unlikely anyone saw The Fall themselves foraying into funky/shiny/tech-tinged hip-hop. Though an outlier in their catalogue, it certainly seemed to come out of nowhere at the time. From the "Annotated Fall" site: "Telephone Thing was written by Mark E Smith and the electronic dance music duo Coldcut, who also produced the track. From Reformation: "My Telephone" was a single by dance music duo Coldcut (Matt Black and Jonathan More) from the album "What's That Noise?" and featured Lisa Stanfield on vocals. [This album also featured the track "(I'm) In Deep with MES on guest vocals.] //// On 25 January 1990 on News Nike, MES commented: "On the acetate they sent me the drums were a lot we're quite a drum and bass orientated group...On the Stansfield version it's more of a pop song, really, whereas as ours is more of a workout...All we've done really is got the machine tracks and got the musicians to learn them naturally". //// On the same day, the NME published an interview ("Funky, Cold, Modern - Ah!")in which MES said that Coldcut's "version of it was a misjustice to the tune. That single was a flop and it was rubbish. It's topical - like all Fall singles. I think it's good to have a go at things like that - BritishRail and British Telecom. It's a natural gripe. One time, I was using the phone a lot and I dialled a number and I could hear people munching sandwiches and talking about my last phone call. I actually rang up the operator and said 'Lookl I'm trying to dial a fucking number here and I can't get through because people are talking about my phone callsl Have you got a bleedin' license to do this?'" //// "Being staff, they get fed up, so what they do is tap into lines that they think are gonna be interesting. It doesn't bother me, I've got nothing to fucking hide! But I said 'Well, is it tapped or not? I can't fucking get through because of your bloody lot!' And she slammed the phone down on me!" //// On 23 February 1990 on Radio Luxembourg MES said, "I think it's a bit too long to be a hit." //// Jonathan More is quoted ("Ring The Noise", NME; 20 January 1990) as saying,"He thought the vocals and all the rest of the stuff we did on it were shit, but he really liked the guitar, bass and drums, and he gave the cassette to his band to learn these parts."" | 0:46:27 (Pop-up)
Mas Aya | Dora | Coming And Going | Telephone Explosion | 2024 | Released July 12, 2024. "Mas Aya is prolific Canadian producer and percussionist Brandon Valdivia's solo project, collaborator to US Girls, Sandro Perri, Sook-Yin-Lee, Lido Pimienta and Not the Wind Not the Flag." //// "randon Miguel Valdivia often makes music for meditation, but his sound is more reflective of firing synapses in a mercurial mind. He weaves dynamics and serenity like a wizard, summoning ornate constructions that move with inexplicable grace. Fluid and florid, his intricate modes and melodies are fickle and slippery, melding cultures and styles from past and present into increasingly abstract expressions that flow like the currents of life. //// Now London, Ontario-based, the Nicaraguan-Canadian musician, composer and producer found his artistic voice in Toronto. An avid collaborator and omnivorous scenester absorbing all he could, Valdivia worked with esteemed acts like Laraaji, Tanya Tagaq and U.S. Girls and spent time in everything from orchestras and free jazz ensembles to playing Indonesian gamelan and Zimbabwe mbira music, all while connecting deeper with his Nicaraguan roots and becoming a dedicated savant of global music traditions." https://masayamasaya.bandcamp.com/ | * | 0:50:41 (Pop-up) |

Released July 12, 2024. "Coming And Going is the fifth release from Mas Aya, pseudonym of acclaimed Nicaraguan-Canadian composer, producer, and musician Brandon Miguel Valdivia. Over the past twenty years Valdivia has emerged as one of the most prolific and respected musicians in Canada. //// In 2021 Valdivia's breakthrough LP as Mas Aya, Máscaras, ushered in a new era. With warm reception from the likes of Pitchfork, Rolling Stone, the New York Times, and NPR it shed new and long-overdue light on his inventive compositional outlook. //// Coming And Going is the follow-up to Máscaras and, much like its predecessor, it represents yet another colossal shift in Mas Aya's creative journey. The fact that its title is so evocative of flux is no mistake; it's an album that teems with subtle contradiction and restless intrigue, all the while carving pathways toward the reconciliation of these opposing sonic and thematic forces. //// It's this very plurality that makes Coming And Going Valdivia's most intimate and personal effort to date. The music reflects upon community, family, the nature of home, and spirituality."https://masayamasaya.bandcamp.com/ |

Gunerius & Verdensveven | slutte i jobben | Der går Nabolaget | Sellout! | 2022 | Gunerius & Verdensveven plays Norwegian psychedelic folk music...Gunerius & Verdensveven is a Norwegian one-man band, consisting of artist, songwriter, producer and multi-instrumentalist Thomas Gunerius Bergsten. Those familiar with Norwegian psych-scene might have heard him in bands like The Harvey Steel Show and the Secret Sound of Dream Walkers, in addition to releasing jazz records as Thomas Bergsten. He is as busy as he is creative..Gunerius said he wanted to album to sound like this: “something that sounded like a hidden treasure one could find at the flea market, an album that could be re-released in 30 years after selling 234 copies maybe?” Nailed it! | 1:00:43 (Pop-up)
The Society of Rockets | Black Atlas | The World Inside | Underpop | 2010 | San Francisco science-fiction retro-futurist rock and roll band..."The World Inside". Conceived as a companion to Future Factory's themes of forgotten utopias and abandoned dreams, singer and bandleader Joshua Babcock calls the EP an extension of Future Factory's sonic map, with a few more left turns and secret passages. With its title taken from a 1971 Robert Silverberg novel, it's no surprise that the EP navigates a dense cosmology of internationalist sci-fi sounds, where multiple reference points collide in unexpected and startling ways. Leaving the Americana of previous albums behind, the Rockets instead trade in the warm melodicism of Joao Gilberto and Caetano Veloso, the tribal robot rhythms of Can, and the 80s-era world music fascinations of Talking Heads and Paul Simon. | 1:02:57 (Pop-up)
Primal Scream | Love Insurrection (Edit) | Love Insurrection Single | BMG | 2024 | Brand new and just released yesterday! Says Bobby Gillespie: "I’m very excited about this album in a way that you would be making your first record. If there was an overall theme to Come Ahead it might be one of conflict, whether inner or outer. The title is a Glaswegian term. If someone threatens to fight you, you say, “come ahead!” It’s redolent of the indomitable spirit of the Glaswegian, and the album itself shares that aggressive attitude and confidence. They have a word for this up there, gallus. Come Ahead’s quite a cheeky title too." | * | 1:07:30 (Pop-up) |
Meridian Brothers | Mi acompañante | Mi Latinoamérica Sufre | Ansonia Records | 2024 | "Mi Latinoamérica Sufre" is a concept album whose sonic footprint was born from the desire to explore the untapped potential of the electric guitar in a tropical Latin context. The record draws inspiration from the chiming, clear-toned and intricately rhythmic traditions of African highlife and soukous guitar band music, sounds that are as popular at coastal Colombian picó sound system dances as they are on their home turf in Africa. On this album, the Meridian Brothers sound eschews distortion and typical prog or psych rock clichés, opting for a pure, clean approach. "Mi Latinoamérica Sufre" pays homage to the golden era of ’70s Congolese rumba, Ghanian highlife and Nigerian afrobeat, blending these influences with an array of fresh sonic contexts anchored by various Latin rhythms, all played by Álvarez. The result is a collection of intricate compositions weaving elements of cumbia, champeta, soukous, Brazilian tropicalia, and underground psychedelic rock all contained within the Afro-Latino guitar band format. | * | 1:11:08 (Pop-up) |
Sababa 5, Yurkika Hanashima | Empty Hands | Kokoro | Batov | 2024 | Renowned for their innovative approach to merging Middle Eastern psych, funk and disco grooves, Sababa 5 found their perfect partner in Japanese singer and belly dancer Yurika Hanashima, who having graced stages dancing with Boom Pam and Ouzo Bazooka, found her own voice alongside the group, and together yielded hits "Tokyo Midnight", "Nasnusa," and "Crossroad of Love," earning accolades from tastemakers such as Gilles Peterson, Cerys Mathews, and Jeremy Sole. In ‘Kokoro’, Sababa 5 and Yurika present a collection of tracks that transcend cultural boundaries and delve into the depths of human emotion. From the nostalgic romance of “Nasnusa" to the carefree "Halilim Halilim", each song on the album tells a story of love, sisterhood, and the journey of the soul. | * | 1:15:08 (Pop-up) |
Kit Sebastian | Faust | Faust Single | Brainfeeder | 2024 | Based in London, the duo of K. Martin and Merve Erdem formed in 2018 and have released two critically acclaimed albums via the legendary British indie label Mr. Bongo, with their debut “Mantra Moderne” earning plaudits across the globe including Rough Trade and Bandcamp’s AOTY lists. Together they weave a psychedelic tapestry of global influences, vintage synths and melancholy élan from the beaches of Bahia to the streets of Istanbul and Paris. Employing a vast array of instruments – zithers, harpsichords, congas, bongos, balalaikas, organs, saxophones, Indonesian metallophones, santours and baglamas – their unique sound evokes a borderless planet and the seamless commune between past and present. | 1:18:28 (Pop-up)
Marietta | Humpbumpdumppumpin | Prazepam St. | Born Bad | 2020 | Guillaume Marietta is from Metz France, and has been toying with the psychedelic since his first release in the early 2000's...."Prazepam St. is also a dark and twisted record, as its title shows - a reference to an anxiolitic used for severe depression. "I have often tried to speak in my lyrics of the way the human mind works, of our contradictions, of our inner darkness, explains Marietta. Sleaford Mods | Git Some Balls | Git Some Balls / Air Con | Rough Trade Records | 2014 / 2024 | Released July 11, 2024. "British duo Sleaford Mods have released two previously unheard tracks “Git Some Balls” and “Air Con” (the latter is a rework of their song “Air Conditioning”). The two are ahead of the 10th anniversary reissue of their 2014 album Divide and Exit, which is out July 16 on Rough Trade. “Git Some Balls” will be released as a flexi-disc with limited edition copies of the reissue. //// Jason Williamson of Sleaford Mods had this to say on “Git Some Balls” in a press release: “‘Git Some Balls’ was one of those studio floor clippings that we didn’t feel quite hit the mark at the time, but today sounds great. We knew what we wanted for the album, and we didn’t feel this was quite right for Divide and Exit. What’s weird is that the rejects always sound wicked when you revisit them, as good as the stuff that got through to form the album which says a lot about the way we work and where our heads were at the time. There wasn’t anyone in the country doing what we were doing at that point, it feels like it was 30 years ago, but it’s only been 10. Mad as fuck.” //// He added on the album: “Where our previous album Austerity Dogs barked a directionless yet solid form of anger, Divide and Exit then carried this basic form of class consciousness. After the release of Austerity Dogs we realised we had seemingly created a formula. Andrew just took the formula and ran with it and his music started to sound much more compact and urgent. Listening to it now, Divide and Exit is perhaps the most punk record we have done.” //// The band’s last album, UK GRIM, came out last year on Rough Trade," | * | 1:37:00 (Pop-up) |

Memorial Waterslides is a surrealist pop record which embodies the polarities of avant-garde and classic songwriting. The debut follows their three film soundtrack commissions: Women Against The Bomb, Tramps!, and Tramps! Pt. 2. //// The duo had this to say in a press release: “We wrote ‘Cut It Like a Diamond’ around a bass line that’s doggedly determined to stay the same throughout, with folk harmonies, shifting drum grooves and angry saxophone squalls moving relentlessly over it. The song is underscored by a dark sense of despair—‘Can you hear the hum? Is there an end to loneliness?’—and has become a highlight to play live.”" MEMORIALS - Cut It Like a Diamond (Official Video) | * | 1:39:27 (Pop-up) |
Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds | Midnight Man | Dig, Lazarus, Dig!!! | Mute Records | 2008 | Nick Cave (March 7, 2008): "'Midnight Man' was the first song I wrote (for the album) and, in some ways, still sounds like an older Bad Seeds song." //// "Dig, Lazarus, Dig!!! is the fourteenth studio album by Australian rock band Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds. The album was recorded in June and July 2007 at The State of the Ark Studios in Richmond, London and mixed by Nick Launay at British Grove Studios in Chiswick, and was released on 3 March 2008. //// It was the last album to feature founding member Mick Harvey, who left the Bad Seeds in 2009, and organist James Johnston, who left the band before the support tour. It was also the second without founding member Blixa Bargeld. Dig features the same personnel as the Abattoir Blues / The Lyre of Orpheus double album (though the involvement of both Johnston and pianist Conway Savage is dramatically reduced). It is also the first to be released since the Bad Seeds side project Grinderman released their eponymous album. In several interviews Cave stated the album would "sound like Grinderman," implying a garage rock sound. In line with this approach, the album was recorded in about five days, an uncommonly short period for a full-length album from the band." | 1:44:01 (Pop-up)
Velvet Underground | I Heard her Call My Name (Mono Version) | While Light/White Heat (45th Anniversary Super Deluxe Edition) | Universal Music Grouip | 1968 / 2013 | "White Light/White Heat is the second studio album by the American rock band the Velvet Underground. Released on January 30, 1968, by Verve Records, it was the band's last studio album with multi-instrumentalist and founding member John Cale. Recorded after band leader Lou Reed fired Andy Warhol, who had produced their debut album The Velvet Underground & Nico, they hired Steve Sesnick as a manager and hired producer Tom Wilson, who had worked on the band's debut. White Light/White Heat was engineered by Gary Kellgren. //// The album includes lyrically transgressive themes like their debut, exploring topics such as sex, amphetamines, and drag queens. Reed was inspired by a variety of authors, including William S. Burroughs and Alice Bailey, and the lyrics create a cast of characters, such as in "The Gift" and those named in "Sister Ray". Musically, he took influence from jazz music and players such as saxophonist Ornette Coleman. Warhol conceived the album's cover art, although he is officially uncredited. //// White Light/White Heat was recorded quickly and modeled after the band's live sound and techniques of improvisation, since they often played loud with new equipment from an endorsement deal with Vox. However, the final product was compressed and distorted—most members were dissatisfied with the final product and it was followed with the less experimental The Velvet Underground the following year; Cale would leave the band later in 1968. The distortion level became a prototype for punk rock, shoegaze[2] and noise rock. The 17-minute "Sister Ray" is widely considered the standout track by critics and fans." ... [Re: recording:] "Most of the recording was done straight through; 'Sister Ray' was one piece. 'I Heard Her Call My Name' and 'Here She Comes Now' evolved in the studio. We never performed them live. 'The Gift' was a story Lou had written a long time ago when he was at Syracuse University. It was my idea to do it as a spoken-word thing. We had this piece called 'Booker T' that was just an instrumental, so instead of wasting it, we decided to combine them. - John Cale, Uptight: The Velvet Underground Story" | 1:49:11 (Pop-up)

"Mas Aya is prolific Canadian producer and percussionist Brandon Valdivia's solo project, collaborator to US Girls, Sandro Perri, Sook-Yin-Lee, Lido Pimienta and Not the Wind Not the Flag." //// ""Windless, Waveless" and "Tú y Yo" feature Valdivia's partner and Martina's mother, Lido Pimienta and some of the collection's most gratifying melodies. On the former, Pimienta is a wordless guide, gliding over a house heartbeat, burbling water and a sprawling mix of cascading tones. Then "Tú y Yo" spins moving melancholy with spellbinding widescreen sparkle, swaying through flourishes and a vibrant blend of congas, Batá drums, skittering synths and more that scatter like illuminated critters in a darkened night, given wings by Pimienta's pensive longings and uplifting declarations of change." https://masayamasaya.bandcamp.com/ |

Kim Deal | Coast | Coast | 4AD | 2024 | Released July 15, 2024. From exclaim!*@# "Kim Deal Shares First-Ever Solo Single "Coast," Recorded by Steve Albini //// Inspired by a wedding band with low self-esteem and a dreadful Nantucket summer //// Kim Deal has released plenty of legendary music in the past four decades, but she's somehow never shared solo music under her own name..." //// ------------- [Fact check: She has... She Self-Released a handful of singles / songs under her own name between 2012 & 2014 -- "Walking With A Killer" b/w "Dirty Hessians"; "Biker Gone" b/w "Beautiful Moon"; "Hot Shot" b/w "Likkle More"; "Are You Mine?" b/w "Wish I Was"; "The Root" b/w "Range On Castle" (both of the latter with Morgan Nagler)... other than that, I guess she never has-------------- Fact check out] ------------- //// "...That changes today with "Coast," Deal's debut 4AD solo single. //// The song is a sunny, ramshackle thing dotted with horns and Deal's warmer-than-ever voice. It was recorded by the late Steve Albini at Electrical Audio Studio in Chicago. Kelley Deal plays guitar on the track, alongside Lindsay Glover and Breeders alum Mando Lopez on rhythm section and horns by Chicago marching band Mucca Pazza. //// "Coast" was written in 2020 after Deal watched a friend's wedding band — the Grape Whizzers — jamming Jimmy Buffett's "Margaritaville" with "revelatory levels of low self-esteem." However, the song's roots go all the way back to a summer Deal spent on Nantucket in 2000, despite "[hating] the sun, beach and watersports." https://kimdeal.bandcamp.com/ | * | 1:57:29 (Pop-up) |

Career
Yazz was born in Shepherd's Bush, London, to a Jamaican father and a British mother. She attended Holland Park School, where she excelled at sports, including the 400 metres. She was also a member of the England under-19 volleyball team. Following a spell as a catwalk model, she scored a number of club hits after recording with the group the Biz in 1983. Her first commercial success came in early 1988, when she sang on Coldcut's "Doctorin' the House"."
