Oh, just got tickets to BEAT (Adrian Belew/Steve Vai/Tony Levin and the drummer from Tool doing 80's King Crimson).
Is my card idea far-fetched? The people I've told so far were kind of touched I would go out of my way to tell them about FMU.

There was a "dirty hippy"/"hippy dippy" mood on Scott's show of the 2017 eclipse. And similarly very "freeform" music and comments during any 4/20 episode.

Like that section in the Acid Test recordings from '66 where for about 6 minutes they're the Velvet Underground (before the Velvet Underground was the Velvet Underground) — only to then wander off into some (for me) much less compelling direction for the rest of the set.

I'm like some others here, not being a Deadhead or even a real "fan" of them, but know that they did a number of good songs.

Their best material came later. I don’t think those early Acid Test reveal their talent because it was in no way their best. As the house band for the Merry Pranksters, sampling the wares themselves they ( and all of the participants) were getting way out there during a time when doses weren’t understood. They were free, invited not hired, to play or not This was freeform, meant as background music for the “happenings” at which people were trying the lysergic material for the first time. Often the band members had to stop playing since they were too out there. It is understandable that it sounds rough and raw. I am a seasoned GD head and I find those Acid Test recordings barely listenable. As historical documents they are interesting to me.
However, “ Anthem of the Sun” reveals what they were working on at the time—for me, pure gold. "Live Dead” is a great album.
This stuff is not for everyone. And, it isn’t required.

“Basically, we got this cast for no money because they all wanted to do it,” Hickson recalled.
“They [the actors] were all great. All of these people, they knew I had never done anything before, but they liked the idea (of the film). They felt that I cared. I think what they did was make me feel comfortable and I started to learn that you have to communicate with people,” Burton told another interviewer a decade after the film’s release.
The final cast was Shelley Duval (Susan Frankenstein), Daniel Stern (Ben Frankenstein), Barret Oliver (Victor Frankenstein), Joseph Maher (Mr. Chambers), Roz Braverman (Mrs. Rose Epstein who has a dachshund named “Raymond”), Paul Bartel (Mr. Walsh, the school science teacher), Sofia Coppola credited as “Domino” (Ann Chambers), Jason Hervey (Frank Dale), Paul C. Scott (Mike Anderson), Helen Boll (Mrs. Curtis), Bob Herron (Street Player), Donna Hall (Street Player), Rusty James (Raymond) and Sparky as Sparky...."

1970's Workingman's Dead album seems a great place to start. The "stereotypical" Dead songs like "Casey Jones" and "Uncle John's Band" are good, but "Black Peter" is a great catalogue track. "Ladies And Gentlemen...The Grateful Dead", the Apr 1971 Fillmore East show ends with a great recording of their closer, folk-gospel classic "I Bid You Good Night". An interesting pop single from 1978 "France", Blues for Allah bonus cut "Distorto", and of course "New Potato Caboose" and Anthem of the Sun seem like fruitful territory to explore.

But the sound of it still hung on in various ways. Michael Jackson's Thriller album in '82 was #1, yet what would you call it if not an updated "disco"? (Particularly the title track, listen for it in there!)
