I don't know much, really. The original "Le Sud" was a big hit in France in the '70s. Maybe his only "serious" hit, as his other big ones were more comic/novelty songs

Yes, born there and have always lived there. With Italian and Tunisian ancestry on my father's side, maybe distant Jewish too (my paternal grandfather had a distinctly Jewish name, though he was catholic)

That's a weird origin story: in around 2002, leafing through a TV magazine in a dentist waiting room (weird because I don't have a TV). I wrote down the URL, checked it out (first show was Terre T) and was hooked instantly

Very interesting - thank you for sharing. My partner, she has extended family (since grade school/via an education exchange program) in Lyon & now more in Brittany. I’ve traveled to visit France more than any other European country because of that. Even a wedding or 2. I🫀unusual innovative French music (a penchant for listening to international languages) although I only really speak the language of music. Perhaps musician Albert Marcoeur was my gateway into the French avant garde. (Besides French new wave & all films culture, of course). I never understood why Albert Marcoeur wasn’t more celebrated (as a national treasure), akin to a Tom Zé as is to Brazil as cultural heritage mavericks !?

Great to read this. Everybody has such diverse relationships to WFMU! That is a funny haphazard of a discovery story.
I’ve always been a 📻 🐕 (radio dog) since a kid. Spinning the old analog dial back in 1981 (15/16 years old) -heard a bizarre music mix & silly conversational dj interactions (perhaps the tomfoolery of DJ’s the Vanilla Bean bean & R.Stevie Moore). Indeed, completely transfixed by its natural playfulness. The 1980s decade of WFMU were pretty wild years!
I believe Ken Freedman became station manger in 1982 - he was a very young manger at the time. It was alotta fun wacko programming.

Radio was wild in France in the early '80s, when the dial was suddenly opened to many stations. It consolidated quickly though. During the '90s I was listening to a station that had very diverse programming, with a lot of immigrant community shows and far-left political ones (maybe similar to CKUT). I also listened to the anarchist federation station too (I later met a guy who was on the board of the official radio of the anarchist federation, a position that cracked me up)

& CKUT - Radio 📻 outta Magill University / Montreal Canada’s free-form radio. I also usta listen to that station terrestrially via antenna (as I was living on lake Champlain during the summer months). Straight shot up the lake from VT to Montreal !
