Fuji and Maxell seemed like they were on sale more often in the early 90s than TDK. I liked all three and would just search for the best deals. Type I for silly radio airchecks, type II for CD taping.

i've used hundreds of maxells, of various types (but mostly chrome) and probably about 20% of them were still listenable after only 5-10 years.
basf were not listenable after <5 years. (i've tried 4)
tdks, 90-95% of them (hundreds) still quite listenable after 40+ years.

to be fair - i only used ...hmmm, maybe ~6 fujis (10 at most). all the same type and bought together.
so, it could be just that type (chrome, 90min.) or maybe they were stored wrong before i bought 'em.

in fairness to the medium of the cassette tape, my understanding it was never designed for music... the engineers had personal dictation in mind and were somewhat chagrined when it became a music format
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:38pm
coelacanth∅:

↳ dj jj. @9:28
i think, too, one must make allowances for the variables, as i mentioned re: fuji.
many of the maxells i had/have were cases of them, given me by drucker wholesale -when they refused to honor their price guarantee after i bought my first cassette deck...scammed me out of ~$150. (~1980 dollars)
...who knows what shady circumstances were involved! they might've been on pallets in the hot sun for days!
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 9:38pm
Franco Twinkie:

I've been reading White Bicycle by Joe Boyd. He describes one recording session where the tape is disintegrating into little metallic flakes before his his eyes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:39pm
coelacanth∅:

...but i did always consider the fancy packaging, flashy cassette shell and other cheap marketing gimmicks of the maxells.
a lot of hype.
tdk was just a solid, fairly plain design. it also weighed considerably more than the maxell.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:43pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

In the end - every Medium has its own characteristics.
What the Cassette did do is put Taping in the geeky little hands of all us little kids in the 1970s. & I was still making mixtapes in ...2005 maybe... & even recorded my own Music on a cassette fourtrack ...maybe 10 years ago...

One of my earliest encounters with dedicated outsider musicians happened in the Summer of 1975. I went to The Roxy in L.A. to see Captain Beefheart. Soon after that, I was in a record store and had a chance meeting with someone who was at the show. He invited me over to his house, which was a crumbling Victorian. He played the A&M four track masters Captain Beefheart recorded of Diddy Wah Diddy and Here I am, I Always Am complete with studio chatter "WHERE DID YOU GET THAT!?" I demanded. He said nothing, but gave me a sly smile.

Years later, I asked him about those studio masters and was
met with stone silence.

He's dead now, but I hear the tapes are in the possession of a person who actually might release them.
