Obscure musical gems, avant experimentation, and classics worth rehearing. A conurbation of Leslie speakers, timbales, plungers, arch-tops, tablas, and squeaky reeds. Black ties, pork pies, Cuban boots, Nudie suits, bobbysocks, turtlenecks, and high-heeled sneakers. Jazz is the north star but it’s a wide universe, so says The Laughing Clock.

I did page through it at an excellent Seattle bookstore (Elliot Bay Books) before opting for the LIVING SPACE book mentioned above.

It has a lot of biographical info on the three but... there are multiple bios of all three out there already. I looked closely at the accounts of the recording sessions to see if there were any special insights...

bottom line: if someone said "I don't know anything about jazz but I hear this KINDA BLUE record is important" it would be an excellent work of initiation into our cult. But if you've already drunk the kool-aid maybe not?

It's readable prose. He's segregated the discussion of architecture in the abstract from the Coltrane and Miles chapters, so you can skip if you want. Really digging the Coltrane chapter, I've read as far as "Living Space" and I think Rashied Ali will appear soon...

Also I think this is one of those things where if I had read the Coltrane chapter first and then turned back to the architecture chapter, it would be more intuitive at that point. All depends on what you're bringing to the book (and I'm bringing knowledge of Coltrane NOT knowledge of architecture)

don't stop! (looking forward to watching the video: so excited that I'm singing along with Dionne's backup singers: don't! stop!)

If you or someone else gives a wrong answer to a question, it competes with the correct answer in your head, because it has just been overtly stated. That's why it is so terrible when someone suggests an answer they don't actually know. It makes your memory worse.
(So says memory interference theory.)

haha, i was thinking birds, but...!
- trying to think of how to draw that.
'seems impossible -to depict each bird (or fly) as a memory it'd get excruciatingly detailed to the point of ruining it.
(like: writing a memory on each of hundreds of birds inside the space of a person's brain!)
