June 8, 2024: Carbona Beats
Listen to this show:
Pop-up player!
This week's recommended reading:
The High Desert by James Spooner. A crucially eye-opening tale of how the DIY punk scene guided a young black kid out of the teenage misery years. The settings, references, and diction are definitely Of a Certain Time, and I found the passages about the author's fateful trip to NYC and ABC no RIO to be super relatable. Loved every page of it -- highly recommended!
This week's recommended viewing:
Race with the Devil, dir. Jack Starrett, 1975, and starring Peter Fonda, Warren Oates, Loretta Swit, and Lara Parker. I think of myself as a student (or at least disciple) of 70s trash cinema, but I'd somehow never seen this one. Patently ridiculous story about two couples who set off in a Winnebago for a ski trip and accidentally stumble into a Satanic sacrifice and are then chased across Texas by evil devil-worshippers. Absurd, but well worth staying up past bedtime for.
Also, today is my birthday. Nancy Sinatra, Boz Scaggs, and Nick Rhoades from Duran Duran also have birthdays today, so we are all starting a band together. Suggestions for what we should call ourselves are welcome in the chat.

Sorry. I couldn't resist, and I'm also slightly high, so more silly than usual.
Yes, we have a deck that overlooks the river. It's pretty damn glorious.

...that IS a real human (both links)
there are ai "women" that look more real!
aside from the abnormally small nose (and i've met a man with a tiny nose like that, thanks to an unscrupulous plastic surgeon) they do it with makeup, and oversized contact lenses.

Note: thanks to your recent G-Raff enthusiasms, scored 2 minty (& cheap!) copies of his 2 albums immediately after the 1978 doozy. Haven’t even listed yet.
Will I be contented?

The two bands pass eachother in the hall... Garage band singer guy says to Jussi from Circle: "Are you guys from Sweden or something?"
Jussi: "No, we are from Finland. We only came down from trees 20 years ago."
Straight up one of the funniest things I have ever witnessed.
