I'm having a hard time describing the structure of the book, forwards and backwards in time. Maybe it's a map: spatially organized not temporally? Continually returning to the center (literally -- the city center) and then going out on a walking tour. Then returning and walking out another way. But some landmarks loom larger and can be seen no matter where you are?
