A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

Reading βWe Are Cuba,β by Helen Jaffe. An amazing, stirring account of how they not only, time after time, endured brutal American sanctions (which are really amount to an act of war) but thrived. Dynamic collective spirit and engagement at every level. Highly recommended to push back against the horrendous propaganda here.
Listened a lot to the WKCR Sun Ra birthday broadcast yesterday. Didnβt realize how diverse he was. Great stuff!

Was wondering just this morning about the βschool week,β which is really an extension of the work week. Was late getting the kids to school when they told me that now, anyone arriving before 8:20 would not be marked late (which is 5 or 10 minutes later than previously).
This led to a larger conversation, the kind I love to have with the little ones. I reminded them that when the public, or in this case school parents, no longer can abide by what is felt to be an unnecessary or unjust rule or law itβs actions like these (i. e. simply arriving later, more and more people, consistently) that actually lead to the changes we desire. Itβs another tactic, like non-compliance, strikes, work stoppages or slowdowns, refusal to pay, etc. Have spoken to my partner about taking the kids out of school every few weeks or a month simply for mental health days; out of the classroom and into the woods, or to the art gallery, to hear some music, or simply to stay at home to hone their individual and collective imaginations and creativity.
The same can be done about the 5 day work week.
Weβve allowed our lives to be so ground down by the ever churning and merciless grinder of capitalism. That we canβt even process the millions of ways in which weβve become serfs in a feudal system, of course with all the apps, gadgets, entertainment and fear mongering corporate media to keep us distracted from what we all feel and know on a deeper level.

And those histories, of which sadly not enough of us know, are the stories of courageous and committed people uniting in collective solidarity to improve their conditions. The huge problem is that individualism has been equated with Americanism and weβve been brainwave out of thinking in the ways that would have so naturally came to our grandparents and great grandparents, who were probably more likely to discuss openly the issues of the day at the dinner table and with their neighbors.
But yeah, these stories are either not a significant part of the school curriculum or not told in a way that really reflects the true heroism of those who made things like the 40 hour work week possible.
Itβs waaaay past time for some broad and fundamental change in this country and the world. As always itβll be us, we the people, the 99%, that will make it happen or not.
The time is so ripe for serious pushback. Today itβs those brave students at the universities, I think, have really opened the door to start connecting it all: the school βportfoliosβ and investments in war, the obscene tuition while management makes bank, our reliance on unsustainable food and power systems, imperialism, etc etc.
As Freddie Doug said about power, it concedes nothing without a fight.
Get yer gloves on folks; weβll need every last one of ya!

That the whole impenetrable behemoth, the deity weβve been conditioned to think of about the free market, progress, capitalism is crumbling to reveal a ramshackle clearinghouse for the wealthy to pickpocket us in thousands of ways, leaving us in dangerous precarity and isolated from one another.
Sort of like lifting the curtain to reveal the all-powerful/knowing Wizard of Oz is just another shmuck keeping us enthralled to a bogus system.

Afrofuturism is a term Iβve only fairly recently become familiar with. First heard it from a writer I really dig Greg Tate, who sadly passed during the pandemic.
Incidentally was recently in a really cool black-owned bookstore in Philly and picked up a book named βEverything Man: The form and function of Paul Robeson.β Sort of ties together his incredible life with an Afrofuturist interpretation.
