The wonderful Andrew White was/is a legend in Washington, DC. He created his own label as a means for issuing dozens of his own recordings. Played on a smattering of wonderful, essential records like this one. He was one of the world's great authorities on John Coltrane's performances, having transcribed his solos. (They are in the collection of Dartmouth College.) White was also a hilarious and warm gentleman. He sought out joy and delight in all he did, including his absurdist sartorial style, as evidence by this photo which accompanied his New York Times obit in 2020: images.app.goo.gl...

I adored him and dedicated to him the second set of this show: wfmu.org... after he died.

re: the dance: it took off because (a) you didn't have to learn all the steps (like the minuet), you got to touch the other person (at a time when women's undergarments were getting less bulky), and you got to "improv"

For all these reasons, young people liked it more than old, common more than elite

Good Morning Jeff!

Yesterday a friend told me a great Sandy Bull story. Years ago he interviewed Sandy for Options. The story never ran, but this is what happened: Sandy showed up on a Harley in full leather someplace in Venice. He had cleaned himself up and was drug free, but during his difficult period he had been completely forgotten. The Vanguard years were behind him and no one gave shit who he was. He had made one last record that was a dark comment on the war in Vietnam that went absolutely nowhere. Now he was tearing around L.A. on a motorcycle with nowhere to go.

Hello, Jeff & DOers & Mothers all, best wishes this day. Ooh, don't get me started on pickup trucks. Despite the not-very-nice associations that have attached to them over the years, and their wretched oversizing in this century, I have developed a hopeless thing for 20th century pickups (cutting off somewhere in the 80s). If you want to do some image searching, 1965 was a year when every brand's trucks were beauts. Even International and Willys/Jeep. My pick as official truck for the DO Sunday morning road crew would be the Dodge A-100. It's out there, man!

Different jobs/tasks though. I met some exacting (read insufferable) musicians who see a big difference between setting up/recording, then mixing, then mastering (which they want done separately for each platform). Can they afford that? Of course not, so they learn and take years to release anything.
They're better live anyway

Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:32am

↳ fred @11:22
Oh I agree. There are some great record producers who don't know all the technical stuff of engineering (Alfred Lion, for example). If the producer and engineer have their own areas of expertise and also respect each others contributions, great! (I suspect Albini was tired of producers who said they wanted the music to sound "punchy" but didn't know what they meant by that.)
