Uranium Club | Big Guitar Jackoff in The Sky | Infants Under The Bulb | Anti Fade Records / Static Shock Records | 2024 | "The Minneapolis Uranium Club Band, along with Static Shock Records and the newly contracted Anti Fade Records, are proud to present “Infants Under the Bulb”; The Uranium Club’s fourth album and first full length since 2018’s "The Cosmo Cleaners". //// Precisely timed ahead of the band’s debut tour of Australia commencing March 19, Infants Under the Bulb will light up stores across the globe from March 1st. Recorded in Minneapolis over the course of 2023 by long time collaborator Grant Richardson and just as rampant and agitated as ever, The Uranium Club once again win their dear listeners over with eccentrically wild guitar parts, revolving voices, elastic-tight drums and the addition of their very own Saints-styled horn section. //// Lyrically, Infants Under the Bulb opens up the history books of unsolved mysteries - unidentified, unsolved, unanswered subjects of suspicious acts or individuals across the last century. Who, what, when and where… but mostly, why? Ignorant humanity of earth orbits the sun once again. The Somerton Man, Bergmann, Bauby, Denton, phone phreakers, and just what is lurking behind the cosmic organ of The Wall?" https://staticshockrecords.bandcamp.com/album/infants-under-the-bulb | * | 0:02:41 (Pop-up) |
The Fall | Leave The Capitol (Live) | Slates (Live) | POPSTOCK / Bella Union | 2024 | It's a fantastic time to be a Fall fan, new delights springing from every corner... Here's one of my all-time favourite Fall songs (if not the most favourite) and this (newly released) live version is one of the more lively workouts it would receive out in public. It also features Mark E. Smith trialing "MW1" as a lyric repeatedly, which is not in the studio version. "Bella Union and POPSTOCK are delighted to announce the release of the ‘Slates’ Live EP by The Fall out 26th April and available to preorder here. POPSTOCK was created by the surviving members of the Slates iteration of The Fall to present unusual and alternative versions of the brilliant records they helped create. These records promise to be unique in that they are the only new Fall releases going forward where actual members of the group are consulted, involved and remunerated at all. ‘Slates’ Live presents live versions of the six songs that make up the original mini-LP, variously recorded in Holland, Hamburg, Glasgow and London, with these singular versions chosen to present the songs at every stage of their live performance, both pre and post-recording. Lovingly curated with input from the four band members – Marc Riley, Paul Hanley, Stephen Hanley and Craig Scanlon – at every stage, including sourcing, mastering and design, and with sleeve notes by Fall uber-fan Stewart Lee, Slates Live is the type of release that Fall fans have been craving for years. Commenting on the release the band say: “To have the opportunity for all four of us to work together on this release has been a real privilege. ‘Slates’ was always one of our favourite records and these versions not only prove what a great bunch of songs it contains but also how much we were able to enhance them live on stage.”" https://bellaunion.bandcamp.com/album/slates-live | * | 0:07:49 (Pop-up) |

Swell Maps | Midget Submarine | A Trip To Marineville | Rather Records / Rough Trade | 1979 | This is the first Swell Maps song I ever heard (on a mixtape a friend gave to me) & it's still pretty much my favourite Swell Maps song... "English post-punk group, formed in 1972 in Birmingham, England, UK by brothers Kevin Godfrey (aka Epic Soundtracks) and Adrian Godfrey (aka Nikki Sudden). The lineup was completed with Richard Earl, David Barrington, John Cockrill and Jowe Head. After releasing two albums and four singles they disbanded in 1980." / Drums, Synthesizer, Bells, Handclaps, Vocals – Epic // Guitar, Backing Vocals – Biggles // Guitar, Performer [Cassette Winder], Vocals, Written-By – Nikki // Performer [Vacuum Cleaner], Backing Vocals – Jowe. | 0:16:42 (Pop-up)
John Dwyer, Ryan Sawyer, Andres Renteria | Bug City | Posh Swat | Rock Is Hell Records | 2013 | Released: Feb 17, 2023 //// "For a few years now, OSEES leader John Dwyer has been spearheading one-off projects from various configurations of musicians under various band names. These psychedelic explorations — which include the likes of Gong Splat, Bent Arcana, Moon-Drenched, Witch Egg, and Endless Garbage — have mostly erred on the jammy, jazzy, proggy, krautrock-y side rather than the tight garage-punk Dwyer usually kicks out with the OSEES. Essentially he’s spent the early 2020s exploring experimental instrumental music with a talented circle of pals. The latest of these outings is POSH SWAT, a percussion-led improv project that teams Dwyer with Gong Splat bandmates Ryan Sawyer and Andres Renteria." ////////// ---------- A statement from the band: ----------- Trap kit, hand percussion, homemade percussion instruments and electronic percussion overflow with extra weirdness. Sick pop rhythms grinding through the wasteland. Sand in your hair and bugs in your teeth. Hand on your knife, knife in your sheath Grimy bass burps through a fried stack And the crack of the snare is a mighty pink smack Bells, whistles, conga, and vibes This is a drug record One thousand times | 0:21:17 (Pop-up)
CAN | LH 702 (Nairobi-München) | Limited Edition | United Artists Records | 1972 / 1974 | Originally recorded March 72... Originally released as Limited Edition (United Artists, 1974) – collection of 1968–1974 rarities that was expanded in 1976 to become Unlimited Edition. "Unlimited Edition is a compilation album by the band Can. Released in 1976 as a double album, it was an expanded version of the 1974 LP Limited Edition on United Artists Records which, as the name suggests, was a limited release of 15,000 copies (tracks 14–19 were added). The album collects unreleased music from throughout the band's history from 1968 until 1976, and both the band's major singers (Damo Suzuki and Malcolm Mooney) are featured. The cover photos were taken among the Elgin Marbles in the Duveen Gallery of the British Museum" | 0:25:07 (Pop-up)
John Cale | Shark-Shark | POPtical Illusion | Double Six / Domino | 2024 | From NME: "John Cale has shared his dynamic new single ‘Shark-Shark’, along with an intriguing music video – watch it down below. //// The Welsh musician’s new song will be part of his upcoming record ‘POPtical Illusion‘, which is scheduled for June 14 via Double Six/Domino (pre-order/pre-save here). //// The Velvet Underground founder said of his new song: “Sometimes you write a song purely for a mood. ‘Shark-Shark’ has two versions – both a nod to finding humour in music. When you’re feeling too much of the real world, the best diversion is something that puts a grin on your face. I don’t know how Abby & team kept this shoot together – being ‘unserious’ was a lot of fun!” //// Cale announced his new album in March, where a statement revealed he wrote over 80 songs during the pandemic upon “realizing that, nearing 80, he was living and working through something that many of his past contemporaries weren’t”. As a “hip-hop zealot”, Cale was further inspired by how the genre “wields technology to create multi-dimensional textures or build surprising melodies. ‘POPtical Illusion’ synthesises those emotions and enthusiasms into a dozen electronic playgrounds, Cale’s magisterial voice webbing across it all with puns and insights, grievances and quips, and some version of truth.” //// It will be Cale’s first music since last year’s ‘Mercy’, his first album in a decade. The record included Weyes Blood collaboration ‘Story of Blood’ and the single ‘Noise of You’. //// The album also featured guest spots from Animal Collective, Fat White Family, Sylvan Esso, Laurel Halo, Tei Shi, Actress and more. ------------ John Cale - Shark-Shark (Official Video) | * | 0:27:21 (Pop-up) |

2 former Swell Maps members, went on to recorded an unreleased album shortly after Swell Maps split up (disbanded 1980.) Unearthed & released on 20th April 2024. --- "Epic Soundtracks and Jowe Head, along with Epic’s brother Nikki Sudden, were founder members of Swell Maps, that extraordinary band from Solihull in West Midlands of England. Swell Maps were pioneers of DIY independent rock in the UK, forming their own record label, Rather Records, in 1977, and releasing their own recordings independently. Their experimental fusion of punk-rock and experimental sounds was highly influential in the UK, around Europe, and in USA.!After releasing two acclaimed albums, Swell Maps split in 1980. Epic and Jowe, by some strange twist of fate, found themselves living as neighbours in Hackney, East London, and decided to continue together developing pieces for a new project. Jowe: “Many of these pieces are improvised and intensely rhythmic, partly influenced by our emerging interest in African music, particularly the Burundi drumming style. We were also excited by some of the wild “No-Wave” sounds coming out of New York at the time, such as The Contortions, and Teenage Jesus & The Jerks. We were also listening to some of the current German records by DAF, SYPH, and Holger Czukay”." |

Misty's Big Adventure | There's Someone at the Window | Dumb Head/There's Someone at the Window | SL Records | 2010 | Misty's Big Adventure are a band from Birmingham, England. Their music is an eclectic mix of jazz, lounge, psychedelia, 2 tone, pop and punk. A long time fixture on the Birmingham experimental music scene, Grandmaster Gareth formed the band in 1996 with his friend Sam Minnear. The name was taken from a story in the 1968 children's book The Magic Roundabout Annual about a kitten, Misty, who meets a dog with whom she becomes friends. Their debut album, Misty's Big Adventure and Their Place in the Solar Hi-Fi System, was released in 2004, produced by Richard March of Bentley Rhythm Ace and Matthew Eaton of Pram. Their final album was released in 2014, with a best of in 2019. On 19 May 2022, it was announced via social media that frontman Grandmaster Gareth had died on 16th May 2022, two days after the band had headlined the Hare & Hounds in their home town of Birmingham. No further announcement was made concerning the future of the band. | 0:39:00 (Pop-up)
Strange Flesh | Burning Bridges | Burning Bridges Single | House of Zed | 2024 | Varrick and Ed have long been inspired by legendary Dadaist avant-punks The Cravats, so it seemed logical that they should put their own 2024 stamp on the band's 1979 single, 'Burning Bridges'. Since day one, The Cravats have been a troupe that strives to push things forward, even when drawing strength from the past - a sensibility very much shared by Strange Flesh in this accelerated age. Retaining the driving urgency of the original, Strange Flesh filter their version of this jittery banger through a warped techno-punk lens, training their sights on a strobe-lit dance floor. For those unfamiliar, Strange Flesh are a Brooklyn-based couple who make left field pop music in their overstuffed apartment using synths, drums and whatever they find littering their inner and outer landscapes. | * | 0:41:39 (Pop-up) |
Good News | Orange Juice In The Shower | Orange Juice In The Shower/Tits | Bingo Records | 2024 | everything waves massive terrifying red flags visible from outer space, surely someone who sings Orange Juice songs for your pleasure is a true Tinder keeper? Answers on a Postcard, but we think so, anyways. Good taste is good taste. And Good News are good news. This idea and more is raised in the new single by the Sheffield trio in the aptly named ‘Orange Juice In The Shower’. The spiky pop with deadpan post-punk vocal delivery and clock-y rhythmic percussion and tight deep bass, is out today, with the short sharp shock that is ‘Tits’ the flipside of the a double A-side single. Good News is a Sheffield-based multi-lingual outfit comprising of vocalist, clarinetist, guitarist and percussionist Beth Aylward, drummer Erin Hoggard and bassist Dan Philpott. Poison Girls | Idealogically Unsound | Hex | Small Wonder Records | 1979 | The Poison Girls were an English anarcho-punk band from Brighton. The singer/guitarist, Vi Subversa, was a middle-aged mother of two at the band's inception, and wrote songs that explored sexuality and gender roles, often from an anarchist perspective. Poison Girls formed in Brighton in 1976, before moving to Burleigh House in Essex, near to Dial House, the home of fellow anarchist band Crass, with whom they worked closely for a number of years, playing over 100 gigs with the band. n 1979 they contributed to the revival of the peace movement by playing a number of benefit gigs with Crass and paying for the production of the first CND badges since CND's heyday. Again in 1979, and again with Crass, they proved influential to the establishment of the short lived Wapping Autonomy Centre by contributing the track "Persons Unknown" to a split single with Crass (who contributed "Bloody Revolutions") and raising over £10,000. Their song "Bully Boys", an attack on violent machismo led to the band being attacked by members of the National Front. The band also set up the label X-N-Trix alongside a publishing arm for the Impossible Dream magazine and recording studios for other artists. Terminal Sunglasses | Could That Be People Crossing My Lawn | Wrap Around Cool | OG Music | 1985 | The psychedelic garage band Terminal Sunglasses were part of the Montreal punk and new wave scene from 1983 to 1985. Labelled an "avant-garage" band, they updated 60s influences with the Velvet Underground's sound, and filtered it all through 1980s punk sensibilities and a wonderful sense of humour. In 1985, they released their only LP, Wrap Around Cool, on the amazing OG Music label. Fronted by Chris Burns (hefty howling, crazy rhythms, dinky leads), with twisted lead and spastic rhythm guitars by Lawrence Joseph, electric bass and harmonica by Foster Grant, and search and destroy drums by george a, the Sunglasses easily take the throne for the weirdest band to ever come out of Quebec. The band also produced two videos, one for the catchy "Antenna Dilemna" which was immediately banned from MuchMusic, and a second for "Psycho Rail," which features a cameo by Leonard Cohen, one of the band's biggest fans. Wrap Around Cool was reissued by Artoffact in 2016. | 0:51:45 (Pop-up)

No Teeth | A Horse Named Panty Raid | A Horse Named Panty Raid (Single) | Post Post Music | 2024 | Released on May 10, newest from No Teeth, an advanced single from the forthcoming LP in June. "The anticipation surrounding the long-awaited debut of No Teeth intensifies as the syndicate unveils their unexpected and fiercely confrontational new single, "A Horse Named Panty Raid." The track serves as a powerful precursor to the forthcoming album, "Decadence In Breeding," offering a raw and unapologetic glimpse into themes of excess, gambling, and the harsh realities of loss. With its thunderous bass-line, dissonant guitars, and haunting synthesizers, "A Horse Named Panty Raid" encapsulates the signature abrasive yet captivating sound that defines No Teeth's musical ethos. Upon purchase of this single, you will be gifted a few oddities that the band have unveiled from their hideous vaults, unfortunately. //// "Have you ever fallen victim to the tendrils of misfortune? Willed without knowledge to push out into the darkness, searching for that sense of danger, yet to be discovered in our mundane lives. We, the dullards without doubt, have placed our fortunes on the line of a weak-minded individual; a large flat-footed mammal with brown hair and the ability to move at “the speed of wheel” and because of this, we have been forced to pay the never-ending price. Big Special | Shithouse | Postindustrial Hometown Blues | So Recordings | 2024 | Album released May 17, 2024. Review excerpt by Clash Magazine: "Big Special were always going to give value for money on their debut album. ‘Post Industrial Hometown Blues’ includes a whopping 15 tracks including all of the duo’s singles released to date – it’s evident, then, that this attitude is embedded within the very fabric of the band." //// "Big Special do not set out to provide any answers to the complexity of contemporary life, the antics of politicians and the impact of capitalism on communities. However they recognise the impact of these on society as a whole, on community and the individual. In ‘Postindustrial Hometown Blues’ they tell their story, but it’s a universal one. The sense of joy in using lyrics to express emotions is palpable, as is their humour. The duo use their musicality, shifting between soul and blues, punk and passion. They have given their all in the creation of their debut album, and we are so grateful for it." BIG SPECIAL - SHITHOUSE (Official Video) | * | 1:09:16 (Pop-up) |

Arab Strap | Sociometer Blues | I’m totally fine with it 👍don’t give a fuck anymore 👍 | Rock Action | 2024 | "Scottish duo Arab Strap were always iconoclasts. Their debut single, ‘The First Big Weekend’, came out at the height of Britpop and, while on the surface it looked to chime with much of the scene’s arms-around-your-mates beeriness, it was a tale of a cycle of self-destruction that foreshadowed the movement’s own implosion. // The band’s Aidan Moffat and Malcolm Middleton were in their early 20s at the time of ‘The First Big Weekend’. But what becomes of caners and bingers when they hit middle-age? It can’t be all pill-fuelled benders when you’ve got mortgage repayments and an Ocado delivery to wait in for? As Moffat put it himself on his 2011 track, ‘Cages’, “These days it’s all shopping lists and school runs, direct debits and tax credits, nasal hair, fungal nail infections, dishwasher tablets, Citalopram, and CBeebies.” And even that Rolodex of drudgery was over a decade ago. // But although they’re moving into a new phase of life, Arab Strap remain experts at chronicling the world around them. Moffat is arguably one of these isles’ best lyrical observers, turning unremarkable minutiae into poetry with a few well-chosen words. Take opener Allatonceness, which skewers the misguided priorities of online culture wars with the couplet, “They’ve got your attention, antagonised fanboys / While rapists and Nazis sell merch.” // On ‘I’m totally fine with it 👍don’t give a fuck anymore 👍’ , the band’s eighth album and their second on Mogwai’s Rock Action label, it’s oddly comforting to see Arab Strap can be just as disappointed and acerbic as ever. Allatonceness is followed by Bliss, an unflinching look at toxic masculinity and violence, and Sociometer Blues, a coruscating evisceration of both social media and our addiction to it. // But beyond those three, Arab Strap’s worldview seems to slightly soften." | * | 1:19:33 (Pop-up) |

2 former Swell Maps members, went on to recorded an unreleased album shortly after Swell Maps split up (disbanded 1980.) Unearthed & released on 20th April 2024... "They recorded several pieces together, including “Rain Rain Rain”, featuring a fine improvised vocal by Jowe’s friend Carmel, who later had a successful career as a ‘torch singer’, and a few hit singles. This track was released by Rough Trade Records as a 12-inch single in 1982, with an instrumental piece called “Ghost Train” on the B-side. Epic and Jowe were unable to finish the album, due to lack of funds. Epic joined a band called Crime and the City Solution, and later embarked on a solo career. Jowe joined a band called Television Personalities, and also recorded several solo albums. These pieces reveal a radical step forward from Swell Maps. Much of this unique sound relies on Epic’s excellent drumming and his emerging piano skills, sympathetically allied to Jowe’s developing skills on bass guitar, electric guitar and voice. All of these pieces are unique and undeniably experimental, yet many of the tracks have a certain rhythmic sophistication; there is also a lot of space for melody, textures and mood. The original sessions were recorded over two sessions in 1981, at WSRS studio in Leamington Spa onto 8-track tape. These multi-track tapes disappeared for many years, and were only rediscovered a few years ago. Old magnetic tapes tend to deteriorate, so Jowe had them carefully baked in a laboratory, which stabilised the coating on the tape surface so they could be copied and digitised. The master tape of the single was never found, so Jowe’s friend Rico Conning recently remixed it, and the result sounds fine, so he deserves much credit. Jowe completed the rest of the pieces last year, and now, after over 40 years, the resulting album can finally be enjoyed. Sadly, Epic has since passed away, so this album can serve as a fitting testament to his talent.!" |

KNEECAP & Grain Chatton | Better Way To Live | Better Way To Live Single | Heavenly Recordings | 2023 | Kneecap’s debut single for Heavenly Recordings, finds Fontaines singer Grian Chatten, fresh off his latest solo album, doing a sing-rapped hook over hip-hop production so colorfully funky it almost feels like a cartoon. In other words, they’ve made a pretty good Gorillaz song. Fontaines drummer Tom Coll is behind the kit for this one too, and the beat is by Toddla T. “Better Way To Live” is all about finding that little spark of joy in the monotony, in the day-to-day things that you barely bat an eye at. In between the moments of that repetitive lift of the pint, or spark of a cigarette, there is an opportunity for bliss. underneath that constant noise, there is a silence that can breathe new life and inspiration breaking through the mundane. | 1:31:22 (Pop-up)
Todd Briefly | Hiding In The Spectrum | "Demos Vol 1 & 2 | Just Step Sideways | 2022 | It’s interesting to see a resurgence of bands doing humor which takes me back to my campus radio days of hearing KING MISSILE and the DEAD MILKMEN. TODD BRIEFLY, however, sounds nothing like those bands, but more closely resembles the COOL GREENHOUSE in their drum machine format. And it works! References a-plenty familiar to any modern rock weirdo: Fender Jaguars, banal chores, making fun of rich people, and hypochondria. It’s got that jerky DEVO-inflected mix of guitar and synth, and matched with some wit and songwriting skills to back it up. But Who is Todd Briefly? You ask again. Well, Todd is an inside joke that no one gets. Todd plays lo-fi garage pop songs that are equal parts painful and hilarious. Todd is the solo project, alter ego and writing tool for Beige Banquet’s T.E. Brierley. Todd is currently hiding somewhere in East London. | 1:34:23 (Pop-up)

After a few singles, their first EP is now ready. “Dreamwave And The Mindcave” (Velvet Echoes) is a highly recommended release. The “Hidden Sun” single was once a teaser, and at that time, the band was more associated with Dream Pop.
