80s/90s saw a lot of artists use 'transgression' to disrupt the culture. At the time, it seemed valid in a lot of cases (Kern/Lunch kinda vibe, the Jim Rose styles....oh, what was that book series, each ha d a theme, around body modifications and other wierd shit....anyone?). I appreciate that Albini acknowledges that he was surrounded by dudes who got caught up in being thoughtlessly transgressive which then disregards the suffering of others. Some or much white dude transgressive humor has been at others' expense.

Yeah, I have always hated that Yoda quote. The most stinging indictment of it is that Elizabeth Holmes plastered it in big letters at Theranos. She did...a lot of illegal stuff and is paying for it now.

I agree 100% Laura. Transgressive art did and can still serve a purpose. More and more frequently when I see contemporary transgressive art, it seems to lack nuance and doesn’t add anything to the conversation. It unfortunately comes across that that squirrely dude in every scene who likes to pull out his penis. Hope this makes sense.

The second time I saw Big Black they did the setting off of a coil of firecrackers stunt...a pretty ill-advised idea since, unlike the first show, there was a full crowd in the unventilated basement venue that was No Bar, proprietor Jon Rans kept his gong that he used when his band Mystic Groovies played on stage all the time, I remember Santiago wisely positioning himself behind it. I remember Rans' young son Ian bolting for the door, I waited the detonation out and took the opening at the front of the stage the second the opportunity presented itself. There were no injuries, but everyone would observe a certain blackening of their snot later.

Claw Hammer was great — saw them open for Rocket from the Crypt and Cows at one of the greater shows I attended long ago, and they stood up well against the spectacle of the later bands. (Though I also ended up working with Jon Spencer’s dad in the chemistry department at dartmouth for a while.)

he was an intimidating old New Englander, but I liked him a lot. in the early 2000s he was annoyed that he was old enough that new faculty (instead of students) were asking about his son’s band. only thing I can find right now is from a 70s alumni magazine archive.dartmouthalumnimagazine.com...
