A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

"Cage set the admission price at $5 and had a time clock installed in the lobby of the theatre. Each patron checked in with the clock and when leaving the concert, checked out again and received a refund of 5¢ for each 20 minutes attended. "In this way", he told Lloyd, "People will understand that the more art you consume, the less it should cost." But Cage had underestimated the length of time the concert would take. It lasted over 18 hours." - WP

I did some freelance editing of a D&D-ish adventure a few years ago. It wasn't a great piece, but there was one encounter in it that was just kind of misogynist and puerile and pointless (and bad -- really poorly worked in to the surrounding area). So that one I just totally rewrote, and I made it an extended allusion to "Camarillo Brillo," figuring if you're going to go for twelve-year-old-boy humor, you may as well go with the master. I was pretty proud of it!

"Cultural cannibalism at its fleshiest: such is the gripe of musician and theorist Terre Thaemlitz, a.k.a. DJ Sprinkles, on her album Midtown 120 Blues, a strange avant-garde masterpiece that is equal parts agitprop and seductive house. On the track “Ball’r (Madonna-Free Zone),” she expresses hatred of this cooptation:

"'When Madonna came out with her hit “Vogue,” you knew it was over. She had taken a very specifically queer, transgender, Latino, and African-American phenomenon and totally erased that context with lyrics about how “it makes no difference if you’re black or white, if you’re a boy or a girl.” Madonna was taking in tons of money, while the Queen who actually taught her how to vogue was sitting at a table in front of me, broke. So if anybody requested any “Vogue” or any other Madonna track, I’d just tell them, “No, this is a Madonna free zone! And as long as I’m DJing you will not be allowed to vogue to the decontextualized, reified, corporatized, liberalized, neutralized, asexualized, re-genderized, pop reflection of this dancefloor’s reality!”'"

I posted elsewhere about our daughter’s grad yesterday from Bank Street but they absolutely rocked it at Commencement. Their president was awesome. Honorary degree recipient, Robin DG Kelley, awesome. A student speaker called for Bank St to divest and no one cut their mic. They felt like a real college, maybe because they are so closely focused on training teachers. I was super impressed.

The importance of teachers and educators to our communities cannot be underestimated. They are just as much essential workers as firefighters. Like firefighters, their refusal to work can cripple a community, so their right to strike must be eliminated.

1st year public school teacher hailing from Houston here! There is a state takeover in the Houston public school district and there is much speculation that the higher ups want to switch the public schools to either charter schools or a private school voucher system. They have removed libraries from the most underperforming schools this year, teachers are leaving in droves, the list goes on and on. Many teachers and staff are afraid to speak out for fear of retaliation. Happy Teacher Appreciation Week to all educators!
  11:18am
Listener Bryan (the Professor):

@Trouble - of course. But they’re afraid the students will offend the donors, so they’ve thrown the students and faculty under the bus. Some parents booed the Bank St student speaker. I’m sure everyone will get through it alive. Schools can handle diverse opinions just fine.

They certainly are afraid of their donors, but I think there's real fear of the students as well. The (racist, dated, tired, false) trope of blaming "outside agitators" shows that the idea that these students have political agency and considered positions is too much for the school administrations and the city to confront. They dismiss the entire idea of political resistance and political community by blaming "outsiders" so they don't have to grapple with the possibility of engaging in political action *rather* than mere fund raising.

The Columbia protestors were also threatened with felony charges when they were arraigned, but they were immediately withdrawn (perhaps due to a vigorous defense from the lawyers present). Same thing might end up happening for the CUNY protestors, but with some delay.

Right -- could be. But so far, the disparity remains. We'll have to see what kind of shakedown each administration wants to engage in to stifle dissent and political community moving forward -- that will determine how they weaponize the legal system (hey, look at that! it IS real!) against their students.

My understanding is that the idea is that students in low socioeconomic statuses will also receive these vouchers? but I am still beginning to understand this system. Some of these schools are already like prisons from what I have heard. It is discouraging to witness! There is all sorts of speculation and criticisms including that the board has manipulated the data to reflect higher test scores since they have implemented their systems. Happy Nurses' week! Thank you to all the essential workers!

i think the fear of agency from today's young people is a real fear: our politicians fear it, so they are trying to leave young people with little reason to vote, or in some cases preventing students at universities from registering to vote.

The ones out here (Stony Brook, LI area) are scheduled when only stay-at-home parents can easily attend them, so there seems to be a lot of insularity (but also a lot of general support for the public schools, though there have been a couple of close budget votes in the last couple of years). A couple of right-wing school board candidates ran last year, but were soundly defeated, but I think situations are more tenuous at districts that are further from the university.
