Woke up the sad news that Paul Auster, the writer from Brooklyn who looked most like Farid El Atrache, has passed away. Loved the NY Trilogy, his French poetry anthology, and his own poetry, which was hard to find even back in the 1990s when I was reading it

Yes. Pros are setting of expectations, communicating a great deal in a short statement or word. Cons are that the artist is compelled to regress to the mean because the expectation is set. Those outside the box then fall outside of expectations and might be rejected even though they are worthy in their own right. I think in Gary's last break a lot of such themes became an issue. The struggle to categorize something that is simply a work of art using genres, none of which fully apply, was problematic.

A theme in the literature about legal information management and access refers to "unthinkable thoughts," those concepts that legal taxonomies fail to make explicit or relegate to the margins, thereby rendering almost impossible any effort to engage or even acknowledge them legally.

Yes, Sapir-Whorf, Lakoff, etc., which I admittedly don't know. For information management it is a practical, empirical phenomenon driven in part by "literary warrant," i.e., whether or not we have an adequate textual basis for even recognizing a category. "Literary warrant" refers to a practical principle for developing classifications, stating that there's no need for a category that might logically obtain if there isn't a literature developed sufficiently to warrant one.

I like the term literary warrant. So for defining beer styles such warrant is a folk tradition. But with the creativity demonstrated by microbrewers the category warrant is constantly challenged by new ideas in between the existing categories. Thus categories grow and grow. I think this show exemplifies how genres can appear when creative ideas get picked up on and used widely giving a genre warrant.

Dean, if you didn’t know it existed, you would never have missed it.
