A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

You can't compare students protesting bad things like apartheid or an unjustified war with these students who are protesting against what exactly? What is the bad thing? That is the bad thing that really happened . . . They should protest against that . . You should not support that.

Harassment and vandalism should be dealt with as it arises on a case by case basis, just as it normally is. These protests are neither. Hope this helps!

We recently saw an interesting textile art exhibition at the Met -- Ancient Peruvian and contemprory weaving www.metmuseum.org... -- through June 16

Listener Bryan (the Professor):

β€œRiver to the sea” is a call for mobility/freedom in ancestral lands. It may be interpreted differently by others but it’s used much like singing β€œwe shall overcome,” which was a call for freedom not the genocide of the oppressor. At every protest I’ve seen documented, Jewish students and faculty are well represented. Seder happened at most. These have been educational and ecumenical movements. Reporting to the contrary tends to focus on outsiders and outliers.

Chief Guy:

It doesn’t matter whatever it is or what is shouted or what the underlying message is. If it’s a student protest, it is good, and we should support it.

There seems to be a conception that any extremist action invalidates any ideological arguments (like freedom or equity) even vaguely related to said action or groups. That's specious by definition. This reeks of the "Willie Horton" debate strategy.

That's patently untrue.

Yeah but Willie Horton raped a woman, so are we going to listen to him?

No, just because some students got a hair up their ass does not give any student group any right to do anything. I keep thinking about the Cornell Campus Crusade for Christ, who always set up stations outside of Jewish services on campus to give out New Testaments.

Listener Bryan (the Professor):

The why are Jewish colleagues joining the chorus? I encourage you to read these letters in response to the police action at NYU. Jewish colleagues and parents are well represented here. Opposing Israeli policy is not antisemitic and neither is wanting to be free. https://facultyforpalestine.education/statements/faculty-letters-to-the-office-of-the-president-and-the-office-of-the-provost/

These students are not Hamas. The vast majority of people in the Gaza strip are not Hamas. Why is standing up to call the university you attend to stop funding this killing - which is certainly not central to any educational mission - wrong?

Sorry, I disagree with you. All I'm seeing is a bunch of kids chanting phrases that they don't know the history of. There have been tons and tons of signs at these protests that are outright anti-Semitic, not just anti-Israeli. And let's not forget that this was orchestrated by Hamas -- what the fuck did they think would happen after October 7th? This is a governing body that wanted to inflict the most on its OWN CITIZENS in order to stir up a reaction. Hamas operates with and colludes with its own citizenry. The educational system teaches Jew hatred from the cradle.

Um, among other things, they were AOK with a faculty member calling the mass slaughter of Jews "exhilarating" and were OK with it. Also please show me where I have to give money to institutions whose policies I don't agree with.

And then there's the issue of "I want to do civil disobedience without consequences." Kiddos, if you violate University policies and/or break laws and get caught, you may get arrested or expelled. No private entity owes anyone a platform.

I have encountered a lot of people in the last while who were taught hatred of the cradle but they weren’t Palestinian. That rhetoric is used to justify the ongoing murder of children. Please rethink.

The thing everyone forgets when discussing this issue is that it started with the Roman occupation which went on for over 100 years. It ended with the enslavement of the Hebrews within the coliseum. The new testament was written at this time. It is THE POPE that needs to fess up.
