When I talk these days, I mostly hear my dad, because our voices now sound a little similar. But occasionally I hear me say something that he would say, and it's very eerie.

1987 seems like a key year for me, too. There's a part of me that thinks of the world as "before" and "after" that year, in a lot of ways.

Do you recall which Disney comics you had? I always wanted those Star Trek comics, but I could never find them where I lived.

I wish I still had my tapes from when I was a kid. I lost some, my brothers took and recorded over others, and I was not as good at thinking forward, with stuff like that.

I used to make fake radio shows, where I would record a DJ's show, and then replace the Voice Overs with my own. I wish I had those, more than anything.

The artist Porest recently posted nine tracks, culled from his childhood tapes that he recorded in 1976 / 1977. Apparently he would make up his own songs... and now the world can hear them.

My favorite line from the Porest website, about his tape from 1976:

"Also featured is one of the earliest recorded 'punk' songs ever recorded in the United States. 'Everybody BROKEN' was recorded straight-to-cassette and sung while violently straddling a rocking horse in early September of 1976 – well ahead of the competition. This track existed solely in the rumor realm for decades, until now – settling the disputes over Porest being one of the first to compose and record in the genre."

I was 22 in February 1987 and still working at Screw magazine. I did a radio show at WFMU on Friday night 9-midnight IIRC.

I have thought about doing a show of the music I actually listened to as a kid, and show the evolution until I start shopping for my own records. Haven't finished it, but there's a beginning playlist somewhere...

Yes, lots of stuff happened. The most memorable thing was Prof. Irwin Corey sitting in on one of our weekly editorial meetings as a guest of Al Goldstein. Corey had us in tears with uncontrollable laughter.

I happened to run into one of the women who was in the Disco band, "Frantique," who had a hit with, "Strut Your Funky Stuff." I recorded some oral history with her, just to make sure her story didn't just disappear.

I'm self-conscious about revealing too much about my employment there, ya know. It was a pornographic publication even though they had great covers drawn by great cartoonists like Ken Weiner, Kaz, Bruce Carleton, etc.

Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 8:47pm

1987 was all about reading "Green Lantern" comics, watching, "Max Headroom," and borrowing my mom's "Rolling Stone" magazines to try and learn more about music. We had a VCR, so I would just record all sorts of TV that was after my bedtime, and watch it in the afternoon the next day.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:49pm
Krys O.:

I didn't own a TV in 1987. I think I broke down in 1988 and got one. I'd gone for about 3-4 years without a TV.

My friends and family all had televisions. I was given some newsletters from WFMU dj Val Sebastiano who also didn't watch television. Sadly Val died of AIDS in 1993. He was a sweetheart.
