Haven't heard the Fay Victor versions yet-Bassist Ben Allison has done a number of albums of Nichols album, releasing one not very long ago with a trio.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:05pm
doctorjazz:

I think for a while Nichols was dissed as a Monk copier, which lost him some focus on his very original take on jazz.
Avatar 7:11pm
Observations:

Herbert Horatio Nichols (January 3, 1919 – April 12, 1963) He only lived until age 44; I'm almost 10 years older than that now.

Observations:

↳ Song: "Terpsichore" by "Herbie Nichols Trio"
In Greek mythology, Terpsichore [Greek: Τερψιχόρη, "delight in dancing"] is one of the nine Muses and goddess of dance and chorus. She lends her name to the word "terpsichorean", which means "of or relating to dance".

↳ Song: "Twelve Bars" by "Roswell Rudd - Steve Lacy - Mish...
"There are some very disturbing things going on behind the jocular facade." - Roswell Rudd on this song, from the liner notes

Just a week or so ago I shipped to doctorjazz a duplicate copy of Love, Gloom, Cash, Love that I'd acquired. He always reciprocates. it's a fun cross-continental exchange.

I am twenty years older than Nichols at his death, which means I'd been alive for almost four years when he departed.
  7:49pm
Dean:

Were he still here on the board, doctorjazz would mentioned Duck Baker's disc devoted to Nichols compositions, Spinning Song. I won't be surprised if we hear it here.

there will be a guitar version of a Nichols' tune, but not Duck. I won't have time for him tonight, but I think the other guitar player's version is pretty cool and not that well known

Doug Schulkind:

My introduction to Herbie Nichols was via A.B. Spellman's incredible book Black Music: Four Lives. (Later republished under the ridiculous title Four Lives in the Bebop Business.) It has four sections dedicated to four musicians, Nichols, Ornette, Jackie McLean, and Cecil Taylor. A fantastic read.

Anne Sealey:

Herbie Nichols Music is very nice and is definitely something that I will continue to listen too
Thank You David much

Great book! I have the one titled "Business", I found it nearly 30 years ago in some dusty old used book store.

I think it's pronounced

But OED provides

Let's call the whole thing off.

George Lewis included a paper I wrote *in law school* for a course syllabus at Columbia. I think he cites it, too, in a book published later by Duke UP:

In fact, I don't think Lewis cited it in the book. It was a professor at Cambridge who cited it to criticize it. I'm okay with that.
