A combination of collage, new experimental records and other bits and bobs, Mid-Valley Mutations is a tour through the mind of Austin Rich, who has been broadcasting in some form since 1998. Heavily influenced by Dr Demento, Don Joyce and old fashioned College Radio, Austin creates Audio Essays on a variety of subjects, and even just plays records, from time to time. Sometimes Live music and Interviews will grace the program, helping create a situation where you don't really know what you're going to hear, when you tune in. What you need to know is when you enter the Mid-Valley region, be prepared for the Musical Mutations... in whatever form they take.

I never listened to any of the solo John Cale albums for some reason. Improper schooling as a youth, I suspect. They're not bad. I'm not sure I recommend them for everyone, but I'm starting to get into them, for sure.

So far, The Frontier Gentleman has run into Jesse James, Wild Bill, Calamity Jane, and came close to meeting a few other old west celebrities. There's a sort of Forest Gump quality to the Frontier Gentleman's tales.

Have I forced you to watch American Astronaut yet?
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 10:12pm
Austin Rich:

I may have talked about this before, but The Frontier Gentleman aired weekly, between February and November. Some weeks the show would get pre-empted, but only a few times. I believe there were two occasions that the show repeated a previous story. Otherwise, the show ran weekly, and had a "loose" ongoing story. This is the only "two-part" story that I remember in this run of shows, but most of the episodes reference something from a previous episode, even if the plot doesn't hinge on it.

I know! That was the appeal for me, originally. A girl I dated for a few months made me a tape with some BNS songs on it, and while the girl is long gone, the tape lingers on...
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 10:20pm

The way both this story (and the previous) use the "sound" of the voices as identifying marks not only makes sense in the story, but makes sense for an all-audio medium.

↳ Song: "The Men In Black" by "Sun City Girls"
One of the smartest things I did, in the Soulseek era of file sharing, was systematically download all the Sun City Girls releases. Mostly because there are a million of them, and that would cost a lot of money to buy. I do pick up a CD when I find them, but finding their records for sale "in the wild" is very rare.

I recall reading some interviews back when it came out. I worked at Barnes & Noble in those days, and a co-worker was a comics nerd, so we were both stoked on "Ghost World," and say it together, even. (I ended up seeing it twice, the second time on a date.) I liked it then, I think I'd like it now. Maybe I'll look at it again.

Due to an old roommate who only listened to The Pogues, Nomeansno, and Nick Cave, on endless repeat, it took me years to really give The Pogues a chance.

When I can play them, when I want to, they are very enjoyable! What a great band.

I apologize for doing that to any particular album for any previous roommate.
